My mother died of a suicide 12 years ago. My baby sister died 5 years ago from cancer. I cleaned up the suicide so my siblings wouldn’t have to see. I lived in the hospital with my sister and nurses her as she was destroyed before her own eyes.
The lyrics describe the torment I feel. I absorbed my sisters during my mother’s time. Thankfully my mother didn’t have to watch her own daughter go in such a horrible way.
If either had seen each other’s demise, I think they would’ve collaborated and written this song.
Instead Aldous has written it for me. For all of us who truely understand it’s meaning. I’m glancing over my shoulder at their beautiful urns as I sob listening to this and writing this.

I am absolutely obsessed with this woman. She has that Bjork quality in that you cannot stop watching her and her voice and words just pull you in, deep down that rabbit hole. I don't ever think she'll be "huge" in the traditional pop star sense because she doesn't spoon feed anything to her audience. But I predict she'll go down in the musical canon alongside Patty Smith, Kate Bush, Bjork, and the like. Fucking brilliant.

    • @themysticmuse1111

There's definitely some Patty Smith vibes, in the tone of her voice particularly. I wouldn't be surprised if she was a source of inspiration, even if Aldous's style is dramatically different.

I just love this song, the words "I am at the water with baby" give a feeing of dread and of something dreadful about to happen, but it turns out not to be. If you watch the video without sound she comes across as a complete "nutter". I'm sure that is absolutely intentional. I think I might be a bit obsessed too so I'm off to stick a pencil to my face.

There is something so haunting about the pose she strikes at the end. Like she was dancing and drinking to forget the reasons she was alone, but then when faced with the opportunity to reconcile, she jumps back into her performance and drama. It's tragic and defeating but beautifully told. I can't stop watching it.

I came to this music because I heard it on a NZ crime series I was watching an afternoon. It’s been a year now and I’m still a huge fan. I can’t explain how good it makes me feel. I understand what she means by ‘Baudelaire in the afternoon’. Try it while listening to this song. I am lucky to have french as first language so that I can read Baudelaire in its original language, and I swear it’s beautiful. As I speak also English I can tell you the mix between Baudelaire and aldous Harding is simply perfect.

Read that Lorde had kind things to say about Aldous and am happy to say that Aldous is less pop. Have been a fan of 4AD since This Mortal Coil (1980s) and still enjoy Throwing Muses, Kristen Hersh. I will never marry my love
I will die waiting for the bells
    Death, come pull me underwater
I have nothing left to fear from hell
I was gifted at the music
I was born the day the year was new
Someone has stolen all the water
I keep the pills inside an urn
    Lord, show me my daughter
Show me her before she burned
We go walking in the hallways
Now and then a record gives a tune
Sometimes we hang from our chambers
    Baudelaire in the afternoon
The yellow rose is a stranger
    The devil’s invitation in bloom
I stand looking at my chamber
There are many things upon the floor
The blade is ready for the slaughter
The Virgin Mary hangs on the door
I will arrive at death’s border
Take back the cover God has torn from me
I am at the river with baby
Her father enters with a leap
Hold her head above the water
She is pale against the stream
I am the horse beneath his daughter
    He is the mountain underneath

Many may disagree but this is like an old Irish folk song. There is something about her voice that reminds me wee bit of Nico mixed with Moya Brennan

I'm so happy for having discovered or introduced to by algorythms to the wonderful music of Aldous Harding. I've already acquired her album 'Designer'. I've already checked out some songs from her latest 'Warm Chris' and it is beautiful.

All her vidios to her music are amazing - so many times music vidios let the song/s down (it's like reading a really good book and you're too scared to see the film because you know it can't live up to that connection you felt). But her vidios are such a part of her story telling - it works ❤

I saw her in concert I think she is an amazing recording video artist . For me I was unable to enjoy full beauty of her art in the concert and I was a bit frustrated and disappointed . I totally love her though. Such a unique creative !
