In Taemin's "Rise" performance, I interpret the dancer to be Taemin's inner self, and the dancer is portraying Taemin's inner feelings and emotions. Fun fact: The dancer is a fairly well known young Japanese dancer and choreographer named Santa Uno who, even as a teenager, has worked with SM artists a lot over the years as their backup dancer for MVs and concerts, he has also worked with BoA and SHINee, and I think TVXQ, etc. Santa participated in a Chinese idol trainee competition program last year and is currently a member of the international Chinese boy group INTO1. As I think you know, Taemin wrote the lyrics for "Soldier," so that is one of the reasons why he feels so passionately about this song when he performs it, because it's all his own words and thoughts. And because this concert was part of Taemin's Japanese concert tour, you heard him perform the Japanese version of the song, but if you listen to his Press It album, or watch a Korean performance, you can hear the Korean version. :D
Thank you for revisiting this exceptional performance! When I see this version of Soldier and Rise, I can't help but think that Taemin is, in essence, singing it to Jonghyun. This was in 2018, not long after his death, and I see the dancer as a representation of Jonghyun. The choreography is so emotional and dramatic and seems to show the struggle he must have had with his depression. Taemin pleading with him to Rise above and be strong. This whole concert has so much emotion. Such a great album and era for him, I just hate that he had so much going on at the time that had to of weighed heavy on him, and all of SHINee for that matter. I'm curious if anyone else sees it the same way?
Rise is my ultimate favorite Taemin song, so I'm always glad (and filled with emotions) to hear it again. It is, indeed, as you said, one majestic song. I think it speaks a lot about Taemin's ambition, and it's really nice to see that he has come a long way and has succeeded. I do feel, however, that he's not satisfied and he's gonna give us much more when he comes back. Nervously waiting to be wrecked again by him. About contemporary dancing, I did remember about Olly Alexander (from Years & Years). He also likes to use this type of dancing in his MVs and performances, but it's really "different". I don't think in the "west" we really expect (and understand) contemporary dance in the mainstream. And I absolutely agree with what you said at the end about how elevated the KPop is compared to other pop industries.
