  • I've been wanting to try the Japanese Kuretake watercolors for a long time and here we are! It's the first time I paint with them and I have found some differences with my typical watercolors. They have a different texture, finish and color selection, but I found the reason for it. Hope you now have a clear idea before deciding to buy a set :)

    This was a very helpful video! I am a beginner, and just bought the "Art Nouveau" set, just because it is so beautiful. I loved watching you work with the colors; the semi-opacity and smooth layering reminds me of '40s and '50s illustrations from my childhood storybooks. Your mushrooms are so beautiful! 🙏🏻

    Yes, I got the Kuretake watercolors for Christmas. They are completly different to any watercolors that I have ever worked with. The colors are smooth and so beautiful. With Kuretake watercolors I have found the perfect watercolors for me. Someone mentioned that one could remove the colors from the watercolorpaper. Well, yes and no. It depends on the watercolorpaper. By some watercolorpapers one can get the colors off the paper. By other watercolorpapers it is not possible at all. That is not important for me. Working with these watercolors is a dream and make lots of fun. Of course this is only my opinion 😊

    I appreciate this general info. My in-laws gifted my 8 year old one of the even larger sets of these for her birthday just recently. While I generally hear a lot of good about them, it's nice to know that they aren't TOO difficult or particular in use and can be very flexible. We also discovered the benefits of taking the pans out for working with a particular color palette more conveniently and it looks like a lot of sites sell individual refill pans. So that actually makes me feel good about my kid using them, even if she goes a little heavy here and there.

    I first learned of these watercolors, via YT algo, yesterday. I have watched several artists praise their color range and simplified elegance that also describes Japanese culture. When I see the paint boxes packed with their lengths vertically, I was reminded, for some odd reason, of a grand piano. There are super fancy grand pianos that have been painted for the visual appeal sides. I strted wondering hat kind of music one might create is notes, themselves, were painted in the exact shades synthestates see them. This paints make me think such a project might be possible.

      every art needs tools to be created and therefore watercolors may seem similar to a piano. These watercolors in particular have a nice appeal to artists since they're arranged in such harmonious way :)

    This watercolor set seems to be very good for nature painting. I love how those mushrooms came out. But I have a question regarding something that was said in the video. That they reflect japanese painting culture? Could you elaborate on that one? I'm really curious.

    • @madalinartz

      well, starting with the box that clearly reflects the Japanese aestetich. The color selection may vary from box to box, but they usually prefer colors linked to nature since the Japanese art culture is mainly based on natural elements. They also have a wide range of pastels unike most of European brands and this is due to their manga culture. I think every art brand reflects the art history of its own country.

    Maybe this wasn't an issue for you, but I dislike the shiny quality of Gansai Tambi paints when they are used with little water. They aren't shiny when diluted with lots of H2O. I like the art you created using them.

    • @madalinartz

      You're right! I've noticed this feature after using them a few times. Since I dilute the colors with a lot of water, they don't seem too much shiny. But when I do a lot of layers, I notice a sort of shiny film on the surface.
