Caladan was largely focused around rain being a common feature of the planet's meteorology. The landscape, as a result, was scattered with rivers and mountains and hosted a diverse and complex underwater ecosystem. The planet's surface is predominantly covered by water and the planetary climate is characterized by abundant rainfall and strong winds, even tolerable at the cost of special, expensive and unnecessary climate control measures. A habitable land sometimes characterized by soft meadows, bogs, and dense forests. Its native species include maritime pine, kelp, panther fish (a large predator with claw-like fins), and jewel-producing corals. Caladan's basic resources consist mainly of agriculture and biomass, with locally produced and cultivated pundi rice constituting its main export, and fishing a traditional source of livelihood for its people. Other traditional products include wine and assorted livestock, mainly beef. Caladan's cuisine is quite refined, with many meat dishes.
The mixture of the organic and industrial - in both sound and vision - really create an atmosphere that is both calming and sinister.

I've never been there, obviously, but something about Caladan seems so familiar, it makes me feel homesick
Standing together, their guards nearby, Paul Atreides and his mother watched the shuttle rise into the air. Once it reached orbit around Caladan, it would head for the Guild heighliner. The Reverend Mother would transfer to it and begin her return journey to Salusa Secundus.
"I don't trust her," Paul said quietly.
"You barely know her," his mother said.
"Did she test you the same way?" Paui asked her. "To see if you were human -- in her eyes?"
His mother nodded.
"She seemed disappointed to see me," Paul said. "Does she have anything against a Duke's son?"
"I -- I was told to have a daughter," his mother said.
"She didn't give you a choice?" Paul asked.
His mother shook her head.
"But you disobeyed her," Paul said. "You had a son instead."
His mother nodded.
"She treats you like a little girl, not the wife of a Duke and my mother," Paul said. "Can't she accept the fact that you're an adult now? Or do you allow her to treat you that way?"
She could feel his eyes on her, but didn't return his look. She kept her eyes on the tiny disappearing dot high in the sky. Storm clouds were approaching. "It's time to go back inside, Paul."
He didn't budge. "Will she treat us the same way when we're on Arrakis? Or is it possible for her to change her mind?"
"Paul -- there are things I can't answer and things that you must learn on your own," his mother said, and changed the subject. Hopefully to something that interested him. "How are your exercises with Gurney and Thufir going? Your father expects you to excel in everything you study. The better to -- prepare -- you for life on Arrakis."
He shrugged as they turned back toward the palace, their guards falling in around them, matching their pace. "I wonder if they think that I'm not trying hard enough. If I have guards on Arrakis, why do I need to learn so much about self-defense? Is Arrakis that dangerous? if so, then why did my father accept leadership of it?"
"We want you to have everything you need to survive," his mother said. "Arrakis is nothing like Caladan. Here, water is plentiful, sand is rare. There, the opposite is true. Here we're safe."
"But not there?" Paul wondered. "It sounds more like we're willingly placing ourselves in a trap not of our own making. Do the Harkonnens think we're so blind, so foolish?"
"Adult life has its joys -- and its dangers," his mother said as they re-entered the palace. "Just as Arrakis will. It may even prove to be the place where you come into your own. No longer as a child, but as a man. A man to proud of, for your father and I to be proud of."
"I wonder if the Reverend Mother will ever be proud of me," Paul said. "Unlikely, wouldn't you say?"
His mother said nothing, wishing for the moment that she was back in her garden. Plants could be far more satisfying and calming than the people around her. She could only hope that their transfer to Arrakis would be as problem-free as possible. That any intrigues would wait until they were fully adjusted to life there. But intrigues, as she knew from her own family, might lie dormant, never really dead, but waiting, always waiting. For an opportunity. For a moment she wished they could stay here on Caladan.
"Are the Fremen on Arrakis so subservient to the Reverend Mother?" Paul asked.
"Perhaps you should ask them," his mother said.
"Perhaps I will," he said.

cant decide if this tune makes me think of some sort of ''humans are death worlders'' scenario of aliens finding out a bit late how hard it is to root out a small group of humans from a world with lots of wilderness ....or the opposite ,humans finding out there are apex creatures on a world that you realy realy not should piss of..
