BMW transmission lock - DIY how to electronically unlock the transmission lock

- If an F-series and E70, E71, E84, E89 with automatic transmission should suddenly “die on you” while driving - for instance in the middle of a traffic light - or on a road with a lot of traffic, you will find yourself unable to move your car aside because the transmission automatically locks in “P” mode.
This can cause some very dangerous situations for you and your passengers - and when the road rescue comes with thetow truck, they will need to place roller-skates under the wheels in order to get your car loaded on the truck (if not used, your gearbox might get damaged. A BMW or MINI with automatic transmission should only be towed directly onto a flatbed tow truck, and only if the transmission is in neutral - if not roller skates under the wheels are required - please also note towing over distance might cause transmission damage and/or accidents).
Manual transmission lock release procedure:
At the moment the most common way to unlock the gearbox and get it in neutral mode is to jack up the car and remove the underbody protection to screw in the 5mm allenkey release screw on the side of the gearbox all the way in to get the gearbox in neutral (afterwards screw it out again to make the gearbox function normally again), this procedure is time consuming and dangerous to do in the middle of the street and must only be done when there is no battery left on the car.
If there is battery power left you can unlock the gearbox and put it in neutral from the inside of the car by using following procedure - after that the car can be moved.

Excellent explanation. Have a weird situation. Bmw 135is (2013). Battery dead after shipping car abroad. External power turns engine running. Get the transmission stuck into P. Will this allow me to get into drive or just Neutral?
2011 X3 - this procedure works up to step 3 (I get the acoustic signal and a warning about the car rolling) but I’ve done the remaining steps exactly as in the video and it never goes to N.
I’ll need to do a few more tests to make sure, but I eventually got my car into neutral and I think the critical bit of missing information is that the driver’s door must be open.

Push the lever and put a 17mm nut in to keep it open,.stays in neutral for pushing/winching etc.I wouldn’t recommend towing like this though as the nut will likely fall out.
I agree though,bmw must think their cars don’t breakdown or something lol. How easy is it to put a simple manual over ride release. After all, 99% of bm’s that breakdown or are involved in bumps end up stuck in park for some stupid reason. Ever had one stuck in water?…bloody nightmare when the release is underneath the car!…so much for technology eh.
Did a transmission replacement and then put the original metronidazole unit back in it but stuck in neutral now won't go into no other gear and I got a charge red light saying no charge can that make it do that to transmission??
HELLo please help me..I have a 2008 328i BMW 4 door sedan automatic..the car will not shift..i can only manually overide it..where is the tranni fuse on this car? mine car did not come with ANY fuse diagram papers in glove..PLEASE help..i cant find any diagrams..my fuse panel below glove has only one fuse in spot #4 to start off....

Hi friends... I have a critical problem. My 335i with DCT are dead. My DCT cant start, the gearbox does not start at all, I cant do any gear and P position are off, what can I do? Please help.

I have to agree. BMW could have thought this one out better. Having to rescue a stalled BMW, in the dark of night, in the middle of winter, 30 below zero, wind blowing the snow, laying under the car that a tow truck was holding high enough to allow under car access was no picnic.

Doesn’t work for 2016 xdrive 340. And there’s no screw. Just a lever you have to magically get to hold down somehow while simultaneously pushing the car. So stupid.

My car stays I neutral and won't go into park. Its a bmw x3 2011. If I press the park button after being in drive, it goes back into neutral. Any way to fix this?

@@LAREXJR naaa, I'm still getting the problem. I was told to get the gear box reset using a diagnostics machine but haven't got round to it yet
@@kaeylnsklub6894 damn...this might sound crazy to you but I read I'm a BMW forum that 7 out of 10 it's because there is a coin lodged in the shifter box under the shifter boot. Well lo and behold I removed it and there is a penny lodged in there but I can't get it out. It's not like the penny is obstructing anything but maybe just the metal interfering with the electronics from the shifter??? Maybe...could be

This is not working in my 530 2012 F10 BMW
I have a 2011 550i. I had to do this step to get mine into neutral when my car was dead.

mine 2011 x3 is stuck in P. It wont move at all in R D or N. The car starts up fine and runs strangly I can even rev it but it wont move. Going to try the method of going under the car and unlocking it manually to get it towed hopefully. Any ideas are welcome..
How did you get it fixed?
@@nucleus8706 screwed the bolt in under the car. Popped it in neutral. Transmission is junk. Sold the car for parts. Not buying a German car again. 78k miles….
@@pfdavidz Ah man…sorry to hear. I sent diagnostic error code to BMW…they suspect faulty gear switch lever. Will wait and see
Terrible design... what if you cannot allow the engine to crank over or it'll cause further damage? This is a bad design, slow, complicated & requires a key fob & battery power.... often none are available. BMWs & MB suck
the same thing happen on my mini i cannot crank it all we do is put a dolly roller on the other side of the front wheel
