I have a 1977 400 which my dad bought back in 1985. I started to restore it in April '23 and got it about 85% completed when my dad got sick and passed last year. The K532 is getting tired so this video offers an alternative to rebuilding it. I still have to restore the 46" snowblower, 60" mower and 80 lawn cart. Hopefully it'll still be around for another 40+ years!
Love this change of pace video. As a garden tractor junkie, I was happy to see an old JD get re-powered instead of scrapped or left to rot in the woods. I have a 1965 Cub Cadet 122 in my stable with the old cast iron Kohler K301. She's a big booty babe...650 pounds of cast iron 'Merican tractor! Far as I know, it's all orig and she runs like a Swiss watch. Way to keep 'er movin', fellers!
I have an original 1978 400 with the original Briggs engine and all attachments. I just rebuilt the old Briggs last winter and she runs like a champ. Best modification to this tractor is converting the hydro transmission to a foot control unit.
To Mr. Redbeard from Mr. Whitebeard. Thank you for a great video. I did notice some bad slop in the steering while mowing. I have a 318 and I think the 400 is the same. There are slack adjuster bolts on the front axle that rub on a plate on the frame. They keep the front axle from flopping around. If there is too much clearance there the steering will be AWFUL. The PO (Father in law) of my 318 could not drive it down the street at full speed. I adjusted them and it drove like a Ferrari. Hope this helps. Art from Ohio
Hey! I just had to repower my 317 with an 18hp Vanguard from SEW - I'm having issues with the drive shaft knocking, this wasn't a problem prior to the swap. Any advice? how do you may should the drive shaft is straight ?
Rebuilding a K532 is stupid expensive and not worth rebuilding in most cases. They are work horses but have both oil starvation and valve seat issues. In some cases it’s cheaper to rebuild a SBC and no I am not joking.
Rare like mr clean with hair. PHONE HOME lil Wayne reference love it 😂 just lost my job of 8 years via text few weeks ago been depressed as heck and life keeps throwing sh!t at me, had a copper flare fitting flood my basement, cats got fleas. I really been finding my new limits 😢 but man you and lonny goofy butt's really cheered me up today thank you and God bless
Hang in there ole buddy. I'm with ya. Most people couldn't handle life as we know it. I know this because suicide by eating unpaid bill and late notice would be off the charts. Lol. But really it gets better. It can't get much worse. I hope. 💬 🤔 Wonder if Grandbabies are going to be worse than there Daddy's. I'll get back with ya on that in 10 -15 years. Hey we're pulling for ya. Here at opposium lodge As Red Green says stay safe from ur ole hillbilly buddy.
What year is that 400 , and does that have an Eaton hydro drive in it ? My Sears Craftsman FF/20 is similar to that John Deere and its a huge mower too mine has 26x12x12 rear tires on it . Good video and God Bless 👍
I suggested that a while ago and a few 'experts' shouted it down , then weeks later a rival channel was doing a 212 engine upgrade and he was fitting a side cover with a small spin on filter ! Any engine will benefit from cool clean oil .sorry I don't remember who posted that vid but they are bound to be available somewhere
That's a start. Thank you. Was thanking of putting on my lawn mower tractor.??? 1st thought of maybe like an oil filter relocation like kit and putting oil cooler in line.??? So I'd ask if a crazy idea would work.???.
This would be considered a garden tractor. Difference being, its designed to use ground engagement tools like a tiller, or front loader. Also these have hydraulics, where lawn tractors do not. Bummer that the old Kohler engine burned up. But replacement parts are not cheap. Repowering is almost cheaper and if its a modern enough engine, replacement parts are much easier to get ahold of, unlike most older flathead opposed twin engines from back in the day.
You should rent or borrow a big big compact roller for your field, if you do it in early winter you won't lose any vegetation and life would be good on those kidney's and brain when you rip your projects across it.... Just an idea
Why in the world would they mount the engine the way they did given that the engine is air cooled you better add a auxiliary oil cooler that mounts to the front of the lawn tractor and run a 12 fan with it because the engine is going to have a hard time getting cool air through the flywheel cooling fan the whole engine needs to be flipped 180 degrees the deck should have run off the flywheel side of engine so the engine can get cooler air.
I am a little disappointed, Greg. Vanguard is not a shadow of what it once was but then again neither is Briggs & Stratton in general you want to remotely good V-twin you go with a Kawasaki or a Kohler. They run circles around the Vanguard. And the sad part is the Vanguard is far away superior to any of their Intek or variants there of that are just the same engines only re-badged.

That is a nice mower i got a 318 myself with a 17hp single cylinder Kawasaki on mine

What an absolutely beautiful specimen of a tractor.
God bless RBG
Great work Greg and Lonnie .
Just picked up a John Deere 314 without an engine for $50 and it’s in mint condition excited to get a new engine in it
A very nice engine update; totally complete. Directions? We don need no stinkin' directions!
Thanks men another good Vid. Ive shared with some younger guys i know to open there eyes to what you can do if you try. And pray.
A 90° angle pointed up on the exhaust, followed by a muffler and rain cap would look great on that thing!
My only concern is that cable is okay to be that close to the muffler might get hot and melt
What happened to the Predator 459cc road to horsepower?
Awsome video.
Isn't that pulley engagement cable going to rub a hole in that exhaust? When they moved the cable to the outside of the exhaust tube.

Are you gonna do more e-mini bike videos? I freaking love those
Yes sir!
I'm alittle disapointed that you didn't rebuild the original motor, but I'm more happy to see that you didn't put a predator motor in it.
Price a rebuild kit and you'll see why he didn't...
@@american7169 that I know. But the rebuild would last another 45 plus years.
That motor, not so much.
....... but it's definitely better than a predator like my original post.

@kevinkeen2450 as long as the current swap lasts his lifetime, who cares?
Could you put a torque converter on each side of that motor
What about the JD AMT600? Do they offer a repower kit for it?

What happened to the factory kolher motor
I thought we were building a racing mower or mud mower😂
Do you have a coupon code for small engine warehouse? I’m doing a vanguard swap in an ezgo and considering buying from them.

Is there a oil cooler kit for small engines with oil filter on them???

I've done it. I don't think it's worth it though.

I rebuilt my 1978 400 Briggs engine last winter for hundreds less than this re- power kit !!!
For a 47 yr old tractor, she runs like a new one....
Next video: how to tune your tractor to run 1/8mile in under 10sec's😄
Steering’s a little loose…. Alignments off too!
I used a motor from them to repower my Bad Boys mower. Turns out they are less than an hour from where I live.
What HP was the original engine? Plus learn from the mistakes of the day.
20 HP

I have never understood why some people enjoy doing things the hard way by not reading instructions.

don't get it wrong like me I put it in the wrong hole and got yelled at
