I think this was the video that I watched some years ago that I mentioned on my site that confirms my experiences. Found it again and added a link to your video. I don't clean my chains either any more, for at least 10 years. My chain life numbers are a lot lower for 9 speed chains, but the speed at which one rides is a large factor in that and winter periods with salt on the roads quickly kill chains. Btw. at 9:00 your average is 1807 km from the numbers on your list not 1784. I deduced that you likely swapped 2 digits in one of the numbers you wrote down or the number you used to calculate the average: The number 1549 should be 1459 or you typed 1459 (in the calculator) when it should be 1549 as with 1459 it comes to an average of 1784.

At 63, I started riding a bike again. I was amazed at how many grown men baby their bikes, not to mention the gobs of money they throw at the bikes. Then I thought of my old Ford pickup truck.....hehehe.

I ride an average of 300 miles per week (more variation towards higher than lower). I started by not cleaning my chain except when the noise bothered me. I wash my bike & wipe it down (not every day I ride, but every two to three - bike was given to me by my best friend so I try to keep the frame).
In 6 months I ground up 4 chain & two gear sets.
Now I wipe the chain down with honda line cleaner (motorcycle cleaner/ wax). Then put a bit of oil on it. The 6 months this way has been no gear sets, on 2nd chain.
That said I can't wait to put a rohloff on my M900 Cannondale.
Thanks for a great episode, and sharing. Reminds me of click and clack, on NPR here in the US...he had a car that he stopped changing the oil (just a new filter and a top off to what was lost). He had 10k's of miles and it caused no maintenance issues...think he was close to 80K miles before he passed).
Enjoy a beautiful ride, and thanks again.

1200 miles a month huh? I'm skeptical... and not a single video on the bike? hummmmmmmmmmmm.

@@brianbassett4379 if you would like to see a video on it, I would be happy to post for ya. Sunday 15.5hrs in the saddle, Monday was only 25mi, Tuesday 8.5hrs in the saddle, Wednesday was 4.5hrs, today I got about 30mi....will be riding across Ohio (got to rebuild front end of the bike - 1' drop turned out to be a 4' drop & bent my fork, going hydrolic disc on front so no more freezing cables, dyno 28 hub with a cinq plus 5, on a new 32 aluminum rim).
Have a great end of your week & ride on

@@JimKJeffries So..................... Jimmy, what happened to your proof to support the claim of 300 miles a week average? I have been on pins and needles all weekend. It's still surprises me that you are on your bike for so many long hours 52 weeks a year and don't have a single picture or video of it on your TH-cam page. Geez, I hope you're ok. Everyone stay safe.

I thought Exposure gave a Life Time Warranty on the LEDs in their lights. I have 3 Max D lights of varying ages which have been brilliant. The LEDs are all still fine. The two newest ones are 6-7 years old. They turn night into day. What is crap about Exposure lights is the black plastic insulation casing they use for their leads e.g. their rear light and piggy back batteries. After one winter the leads for each both became brittle and cracked now cannot use them as the leads have come away from the input jacks.
Re mileage on chains. With derailleur transmissions I used to get about 5-6k miles for each chain before needing replacement. I was riding about 10k miles each year everyday in all weathers carrying heavyish rear panniers each day. I used to clean and re-lube my bike's transmission regularly as I hate a noisy dirty transmission creating more friction meaning more effort to pedal the bike. In the end I gave up on derailleurs and built a bike with Rohloff hub with chain and full chain cover. My Rohloff bike chains now last about 15k miles before they have stretched to the notional 1 value on my chain checker meaning replacement is necessary. I use the KMC X-1 silver the recommended one for SS and IHG bikes. I also bought a belt drive bike, disc brakes, IHG which is truly zero maintenance. Soon I'll put my Rohloff hub on it as currently it has Alfine 8 on it, an inferior hub. Then it will be happy days.

That's not good only after one year and gritty oil...but as you found out later, there was a metal chip caught in the bearings...I definitely would have sent it back...even out of warranty...

That's why I use dynamo lights, never had one go wrong whereas battery lights break all the time, switches, leds, battery failures or go flat while I'm riding because I forgot to charge 😄... useless

MY first SA XL-FDD dyno drum brake has 32,000 miles, 8,200 on tour at 120 lbs bike with just a bearing change. Last year it was at the designed pad wear limit and was cutting into the cable, so I did have to make a longer straighter pull arm. Works just as well as disc.
My Edelux and tail light is still working as well, with all this now on a new roadster bike and same new stuff for the tour bike.
Lights were ON 100% of the time. I've done 45 mph half a dozen times as well.
      My Rohloff has 20,500 miles.

2000 miles for a chain life. I've been riding since January 2019 with the same belt (14000 miles) and it's still rolling. No oil, no WD40, no cleaning, no nothing. Just hop on and ride. Zero maintenance.
There's nothing better for bike commuters.
