Dicky Knox (Richard Knox) the prison officer who he mentions saving his life at 37:00 was my grandfather, who sadly passed away to cancer... right up till the last 4ish months of his life he was still out playing the monday and friday night leagues having a good laugh with his boys. He told me this story, but the fact Chris still remembers him and still considers him to be the man who brought him back from the brink and speaks so highly of him is just incredible, and the legend that he was still lives on in so many peoples memories 💔
Have u ever considered finding a way of contacting Chris an letting him know who u are and about his passing sorry for trying to sound like I'm interfering it's just such a lovely comment an the way Chris still remembers him nearly 20 years since he was in prison.
I've been watching these interviews back to back over the last couple of days. Every one of them has been superb in different ways. Dan has been the perfect interviewer, just asks a question, then shuts up and doesn't spend the next 10 minutes interrupting like others do!
Undoubtedly the best interview you've done for this podcast, Dan. I was a teenager when Mason was in his prime and, not having sky, he was my favourite player.
His match vs Adams in the 99 QF was a classic and an incredible comeback. He was lucky tbf as Wolfie missed several match darts (could've gone out 4-1).
I've rewatched his 97 matchplay semi vs Baxter and he probably would've won on neutral turf but the Blackpool crowd was all on Baxter's side and gave shit to whoever he played against.
2000 should've been his year at Lakeside. Ton plus average to knock out Barney in R1 (the only 100+ average of the tournament that year) and it took a world record number of 180s by Hankey to beat him in the semi. Another classic up there with the best matches ever on either side of the divide.
In a parallel universe there's a version of history where Mason wins the 97 matchplay, the 00 embassy and goes down in history as the only player to win a major on each side of the divide in that era.
Darts is about fine margins. Mason has a career he can be proud regardless of honours. He was ahead of his time and would be absolute box office if he was around now and going toe to toe with the likes of Gezzy.
Consider this also, Mason is only 3 months older than the current world champion so maybe a comeback wouldn't be entirely unthinkable!

chris mason has went way up in my estimation, very honest and came across great, fair play mase, top man and a great dart player, wish him well
Maybe this is what you needed to learn don’t judge a book by a cover the fact you don’t know him you should never had a estimation on him.
Great insight into the life of mace, from his early days in darts to his life in prison, and mental health issues, he’s living the dream now and long may it continue , very talented player and excellent darter 👍

I get why some don’t like Mason and I won’t pretend to love his punditry just cos he’s on a podcast but I do admire how he says what’s on his mind. I don’t agree with those always bringing up his past whenever he says something they don’t agree with. He served his time and is trying to better himself.
