    SPOILER:
    The PS5 at the end of the video was investigated during a livestream. The southbridge was replaced and the fault still existed. We managed to eventually get UART to work, which concluded it was the APU :( We gave it our best shot!

    Need to sort out your multimeter delay. It's costing you in mistakes and time.

    • @tallynmorse6808
      @tallynmorse6808 20 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +5

      Paul Daniels needs to sort out his multimeter software delay that’s been an issue since day one. Louis Rossman which does this same kind of stuff but on apple devices has complained about it before as well. It mostly just comes down to not waiting long enough to get a proper reading. A traditional multimeter would probably have the same delay as it adjusts scales.

    • @SkippiiKai
      @SkippiiKai 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      A half decent multimeter is going to be a lot faster than that. But yeah, Rossman was talkung about Paul Daniels and the bugs in a video yesterday. Somewhere in the middle of an over 1-hour+ long video about a guy he'd considered doing an event with but it didn't work out logistically but instead of saying that he insulted the other guy and his wife said something that wasn't accurate on a live stream and then when the other guy sent him an angry e-mail about it he got incredibly insulted and now apparently it's his mission in life to destroy the other guys life, reputation and company. It was...something. Rossman is great, he really knows his stuff about electronics and the law. I was really disappointed to see that whole psychopath side of him, although he has been hinting or even saying it for months whenever he mentions in a video why he's single. So, yeah, basically any cheap $20 meter should be able to react much quicker than whatever Joey is using. I don't know why he doesn't just make his own basic probe that just has 3 red/green LEDs on it: one for 3.3, 5, and 12v, where each one switches from red to green of the power rail is within tolerance. It would be instant, could have an instant little beep to indicate correct voltage, or a long/low beep/klaxon to indicate a voltage present but out of spec. You could make one in an hour.

      @@SkippiiKai Louis is very knowledgeable but lacking ever so slightly in his social skills approach to dealing with people and finding solutions going forward. I also think (opinion only) that he ended up sort of as a paid pet for a billionaire, and that has only served to amplify his weaknesses. His how to repair videos are awesome, I use to really enjoy them. But he opened up a right to repair rabbit hole and is still digging on the bottom of it.
      That said, yes, the multimeter is too slow. For the type of "skipping around the board looking for shorts" approach it is nowhere near quick enough. For voltage reading, it seems to have a very hard time to range up properly and takes too long to report a result. This is the sort of thing that can cost a lot of time and a lot of money chasing a false symptom.

  • @SkippiiKai

    Joey, every video brings you one step closer to learning PSU repair! Come to the dark side... We've got all the dark topologies. We've got the flyback, the forward converter, the Zeta, the čuk, the sepic... I know you can hear those stacks of PSUs calling you. You know you want to.

  • @jamesk9375
    @jamesk9375 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

    I wouldn't have the patience to use that computer multimeter system. There is so much delay in the system and that's partially why you didn't catch the 3.3v reading, but I get why you use it.

    For the power supply issue put your probes on the 12v rail and monitor when it shutdowns if the voltage drops🎉

  • @woox2k
    @woox2k 28 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

    You really should start looking into power supplies too! You did say that you are afraid of them because of hazardous voltages in them but many PSU issues can be diagnosed and repaired without even plugging them in. Only thing you need to remember is to check and discharge input capacitors when you open up the PSU (often there is a bleed resistor but not always), everything else is safe until you plug it in again. This way you could at least look visually at the PSU or measure a thing of two in there. Very often the stability issues are caused by bad output capacitors which are easy enough to replace. PSU with no output at all may be as simple as dead bridge rectifier, input capacitors or primary driver mosfet, again, easy to fix (blown input fuse usually indicates this). There might be more weird issues there but at that point you at least know if it's worth while to fix or not.

    The first one hit hard.. The Second PS5 was a nice fix and just easy because of the knowledge you gained over the years. And with the third one.. I don't know.. Sally isn't that happy lately but as every win streak, every loss streak has an end. Still runs better in my opinion than in the first season.

    Easy way to test if is the the power supply is just log the 12v rail, if it starts to drop voltage than you know you dont have enough amps or if cuts off the 12v for 1 ou 2 sec.

    why do you think its a good price if it costs £100 and its broken. Do you not account for your time and risk. I hope that if you do this in your own time you actually get good deals. The price of broken goods should be extremely cheap not 1/3 working price. It's people like that that reinforce these prices. It's not economical at all, I repair digital cameras, the for parts prices are nuts but I find it quite fun.
    I really do hope you keep the good deals to yourself otherwise I worry for your financial future. Please do not sell yourself short.

    • @SkippiiKai
      @SkippiiKai 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Where do you even get incandescent bulbs these days? 😅 But, no, he doesn't need and couldn't use a dim bulb for this stuff. It would just activate the Under Voltage Lockout on the SMPS. Dim bulbs only prevent 240v mains from going bang on a short circuit. They are great if you just replaced a high voltage mosfet on the main power supply and want to see if you put it in backwards without an impact face shield. Useless if you're working on the boards, because the power supply already has over and undervoltage and overcurrent and short circuit protection built in.

    I reckon you could do power supply repairs, Joey. Quite a few other repair channels tackle them and -none of them have died yet- once you take the plunge and know what to do (safely) it would be another great skill to master. And the timing seems quite prescient. Is that the right word? I just mean with you running out of PSUs now.

Discharge those caps! then wait a few 3-5 minutes then discharge again because they can build a charge back up on their own, after that your good, unless you power back up or charge the caps. @JoeyDoesTech and everyone else for that matter, Don't let someone else's lack of knowledge scare you from learning, sad.
