Savage, Spartan, and very special, the Ferrari F40 was created to be the most unapologetic example of a Ferrari supercar. A uniquely Ferrari perspective on what it meant to create a truly performance first machine. Controversial in its day, and quickly iconic, the F40 represented the most stripped back vision of a road car money could buy. So, is it any surprise people wanted to race them? And would the road car’s reputation follow it to the track?

I don't think automobillistic ever covers smaller series but there was a interesting development where people started running more front raked setups, rear suspension, geometry, springs lower/softer more like a FR, and i know that won and podiumed countless titles. I believe the MR-S is the main one that still runs rear raked like most MR. It started so far as i know with a guy named Steve who at time went by name XHEAD online, previous x1/9 guy in national series autocross. More people tried it and worked really well, mkii made 1993 or later can even achieve similar setup with lowered rear and increased tire diameter. They drive a bit like fast-drift car, or maybe a drag car? but you don't really drift them so much since that would burn out the rear tires extremely quickly, but regardless the changes in vehicle setup helped fuel a lot of MR2 entries in various classes at highest levels stateside.
Outside that first gen had a larger following internationally in rally cross, and some gymkhana style events, mr-s is the main one with interesting time attack history.

BMW M Hybrid V8 and Porsche 963 made their debuts at the 2023 24hrs of Daytona. I've never seen the F40 in person but can recognize that rear end anywhere.

There is demand, its filled by cars that are more extreme at this. Lotus Exige until recently, Ariel Atom, Caterham cars adn BAC Mono among other alike. Ferrari stopped making driver's cars a while ago, focusing on rich show offs who dont know how to drive nor want to, and just want bling or "investment" or both. Before we had it as something more and raw across the range aside of it being marque for actors and rich petrolheads.
It shows in transition from manual offerings over late 90s and 2000s and increase in sales per model. They dont care about proper car people, if they did they would keep manual no matter what, because that's what completes the experience of a road sports car.
Instead they focus on stupid callbacks like trim around buttons "inspired by gated manual transmission" that appeals to stupid and posh.

All the critics of the f40 just missed the point of what this car was about.
It was about speed and the thrill of driving. Without any compromise.
    Doors rattling? Who cares?
Given the circumstances i think it was an extremely successful racing car Given that its racing debut was over 6 years too late.
The f40 is basically road going version of the 288 GTO Evolutzione. A car for racing in the cancelled group b racing formula.
The f40 lm was really a racing version of a road version of a racing version of a homologation special road car (288 gto).
Had Group b racing not been cancelled in one form or another this family of cars would have extremely successful.
But would the F40 road car have ever been made if Group b had happened?
One of the chief engineers at ferrari convinced Enzo that the 288 gto Evolutzione couldn't be allowed to die quietly, it was something special and needed to be saved somehow.

The f40 was the vision of a pure driver focused sports car of the engineer that created it, Nicola Materazzi, in a moment of economical struggle for Ferrari. It was so good though that people used it for racing(which it wasn't built for) when it was already obsolete in a time when technology was rushing forward. I think looking at its racing pedigree is absolutely fine, and I actually enjoyed it, but it doesn't matter when judging a road car. It would be like judging lotus 111 chassis cars as race cars(in their categories of course). It doesn't make sense, since they compete against purpose built race vehicles, and they were never meant for racing in the first place. And they're so valid and capable anyway, so that a lot of enthusiast and gentleman drivers still keep using them for racing decades after it was conceived.

It would have been a great race car, if GT1 had happened in 1988 and not 1993. It was better on the track than it's period (and slightly later) rivals, the Jaguar XJ220, the Bugatti EB110, the Lamborghini Diablo and whatever Porsche 911 was in GT1 at the time.

@@samacw if you were a motorsport enthusiast you should know by now that the 911 has covered half the field since it's creation in 1964. From 60,70s Trans Am, 70s, 80s IMSA, group 5 sports endurance, GT2, BPR series, ALMS, and the DRM the 911 dominated or at the very least was very race successful. From beating muscle cars with double the HP in 70s IMSA to beating prototypes in Daytona, Le Mans the very last targa Florio. The 911 dominated. And because of that no other car has been handicapped, banned and outlawed more In motorsports then the 911. Like it or not it's been the trend since it's first race in the Trans Am series or monte carlo. BTW the 911 GT1 is not a 911. It's a parts bin prototype that was homologated. Underpinnings from the 962 group C car. Engine from the 911 or from canceled Indy project I think, etc, etc.......

It would have been Porsche 959 or more accurately the circuit version of the car the Porsche 961 would have been F40's competition at if we had a quote on quote "GT 1 Series in 1988" ironically that would have been a GT series run to Group B regulations yes that Group B.
I imagine the series would of consistted of Porsche 961s, likely a RWD Version of the Ford RS200, the Jaguar XJ220 as the car was originally designed with the still born Group B GT class in mind and the Lamborgini Countact 5000 quattrovalvole another car that was conceived for the Stillborn class.
Finally at that point I imagine that privateers of the era would be using the older Ferrari 288 GTOs, Porsche 911 Turbos possibly also the Lotus Esprit and some madlads may still be using a massively moddfied version of Lancia 037 I mean some nutter tried to use one in the Japanese GT Championship in 1994!!! 😂😂😂

The F40 is the litteral definition of what is a race car on open road.
There is stricly nothing inside for your comfort, because that beast wasn't made for that, it's only purpose is racing.
That's why the F50 is "kinder", after the F40 they thought a legit racing car in the hand of their customers was a bit too much to handle, and that's why many are considering the F40 as the ultimate Ferrari

Great vid! Recently I also checked on the race records of 94/95/96 with statistical data website and video on TH-cam. For a 7 year old car at the time, it was still very competitive in those GT championship, namely the F40 could still achieve many pole positions and fastest racing laps. However, the F40 racing teams (both in BPR and JGTC) seemed lack of some luck to transform that into the podium or even finishing the race. Of course, some of the DNF were caused by collision, but others were just because of some minor problems like the electric, brakes or belt.
Maybe it's about the limited teams' budget or the factory support? It's just a guessing, from what I can see at least there were not many teams racing F40 in each championship.

I actually tend to avoid driving this in GT5/6. I like to race cars either stock or just tuned enough to win, and I find the F40's odd proportions disorienting. On that point, I find myself overshooting turn braking points because the nose is a mile in front of the wheels. I also find the extreme stiffness and lightness make the car very difficult to handle on Nurburgring and Sarthe. On the other hand, it is awesome on oval tracks and TR246. The aerodynamics are suburb at high speed, which means I am suddenly going a hell of a lot faster than I think I should be! Anyway, thanks for the cool video! Considering the F40 was designed for Group B racing, just like the 288GTO before it and the 308GT/M before that, I wouldn't exactly say they didn't plan on racing it. They were simply too late just like Porsche with their 959 and many others. And despite Group B being cancelled in 1986 they still went through with an FIA homologation for the F40 in 1989 showing that they did truly intend on racing it, the series they built it for simply didn't exist anymore by the time it was finished. Just like the 308GT/M and 288GTO before it was simply too late and even if it wasn't it would've likely suffered the same fate of being outdated and uncompetitive long before it even tried to compete

While the 288 GTO was designed around the Group B rules, and was used as a test bed for some of the F40's development process, the F40 itself was not built to Group B specification.
Could it have been a consideration during pre 1986 development? Maybe, but we only have Ferrari's word on it, and they say it wasn't designed for racing.
Edit: yes they homologated it in 1989, after the production of the LM - as the video discusses

The 1988 to 1992 Ferrari F40 was my "Favourite" Ferrari of all time until now when I was still a Ferrari Fanboy in the 90's! Other cars I like from Ferrari is the successor of the F40 the F50, its predecessor the 288 GTO, Testarossa, 512M, 512TR, 348, F355, 456GT, 550 & 575 Maranello and 360 Modena! I wish IF ONLY LAMBORGHINI WAS "FILTHY RICH AND A SOLO COMPANY" that time and only if they allowed Horracio Pagani to use Carbon Fiber on the Countach and Diablo and again if only Lamborghini have a lot of money to spend at that time in the late 80's until the late 90's, they could have had a Faster Countach that can match the F40 but simply the Diablo was its match including the F50 if only they agreed with Horracio's proposed plan and approach because the prototype at that time when they where designing the final version of the Countach was a SUPER COUNTACH faster than the normal Diablo and can easily smoke the F40 in acceleration and stop speed but that plan was instead done to the Diablo. If Lamborghini had a lot of money in the 90's they could have had produced a Diablo faster than the XJ220, EB110 SS and the F1. The SV, GT and VT6.0 are more than enough to blow out of the water the F40 and F50 if we are just talking about road legal super cars! The Diablo could have been the fastest road car until it was retired in 2001 with the VT 6.0 and the VT 6.0 SE then replaced by the Murcielago the following year! Man ohhh Man my dream Ferrari the F40. If I will own one, I will paint it Galaxy Black in a shiny silky smooth black paint then with the phrase at both sides of the super car "KNIGHT RIDER: F40"!

    - No mention of the Ferrari F40 CSAI-GT, GTE, GTE II, LM Barchetta or the Simpson V12...
    - Michelotto is italian, as so is pronounced with as MICKELOTO, not the usual English "ch".
    - No mention of how it was originally homologated as a Group B racecar and then campaigned as a GT1 car in the several national and international championships.
I'd be happy to help you gather information on the F40 and help you make a more complete and accurate video :D

      1) the other racing variants fall under the same "F40 LM" internal codes to my knowledge, and while various teams badged them differently, for the sake of a 10 minute video the "GTE" cars are much the same.
Apologies for the incorrect pronunciation, that is my bad.
      2) The F40 was not developed as a Group B car. The 288 GTO was and that car aided development of the F40, but the F40 itself was not built to Group B specification.
      3) The video does mention more than in passing the F40s regional GT career.

This is credited as the last Ferrari by Enzo, but it's more properly first Ferrari by FIAT, because even if Enzo was still alive, the machine had quite nothing of Ferrari's phylosophy. For Enzo of roaring times every Ferrari, even the road cars, had to be first and foremost a racing car, while the F40 never had a competitive intent and never had a real racing program. The project was totally by Materazzi, following the instruction by Ferrari for a great car after some years of less than exciting road vehicles, and the target was to beat the 959, at least in max speed. The F40 missed the goal, because the 959 still is credited for a better top speed, as every other performance goal, F40 top speed of 201 miles/hour was never officially credited and was never reached by an independent attempt. And the semi-official racing program had mediocre results, with some minor victories, because it started too late, so 959 was better in this too, winning not only Paris Dakar but also a 24 hrs of Le Mans in its category. Than come McLaren with F1 and the F40 was brutally outmached. But F40 was a resounding commercial bang, starting modern supercar era, so in a sense is a perfect icon of a changing era. But 288 GTO is, in my view, the last proper, and most beautiful Ferrari.

    • @ConfiUser3
      @ConfiUser3 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Respectfully, I don't think that models like the Mondial, the 400 or the 412 were that sporty and race cars for the road. Maybe the top models were, but the philosophy rather was to sell road cars to finance the racing program.
There was no attempt to beat the 959. This would have been with the 288 GTO Evoluzione with the Group B version being developed, but since that category died, there was no use for it really. So the F40 was built on that base. If the F40 truly was built to compete with the 959, it would have driven in very similar categories and the cars would have had similar concepts. However, the cars are so completely different to each other, bar the engine and power stats, that it's difficult to compare them.
The 959 is not credited with the better top speed. Actually, the F40 has the better top speed. The F40 never was as fast as the 959 from 0-100 kph, and honestly it's not surprising considering the F40 is rear-wheel drive only with the Porsche being all-wheel driven. The first two gears of the F50 were not properly suited to bring the traction to the ground. However, the 100-200 kph stat is very impressive with 6.4 seconds, and from 0-200 kph, the F40 was with 11.0s much faster than the 959 which needed 13.3s for this. While the F40 did not reach 201 mph, or 324 kph, like advertised, it did reach 199 mph as auto motor & sport reported. With this, it also beats the 959 top speed of 197 mph slightly. It does not beat the top speed of the 959S though, the souped up sportier version of the 959, which I honestly would expect from a car with more power and a better cw value.
As you also mentioned, the racing program started very late and was rather an afterthought. So it's not surprising that an old car without much backing of the manufacturer has worse results than the 959/961 which had factory backed racing programs and was used as soon as it was developed. Considering the low effort that went into the development of the race cars (which were based on the road cars instead of being purposely built and designed as race cars mainly), it's still a respectable effort, with getting a win in the quite competitive BPR championship as a 10 year old car. One has to imagine of what the F40 would have been able to achieve if it was designed as a race car first and foremost and if Ferrari would have put more effort into racing this car.
And about the F1 outmatching the F40... yeah, the F1 brutally outmatched every car at that time and it remained the benchmark for over 10 years until the Bugatti Veyron arrived (well, beating it in top speed at least).
I think automobilistic described it perfectly with how he explained the story.

    • @MicheleGardini
      @MicheleGardini 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@ConfiUser3 I totally agree, in fact I wrote there were already poor Ferrari road cars around when the project F40 started. And that was the point, as Materazzi explain in a video (by Davide Cironi), it started for that exact reasons: Ferraris were loosing appeal as performance cars, there was a lot better around, and Porsche just made the best street cars ever, the more advanced, fast, innovative. F40 had to beat the 959, not on the tracks or rally (group B was already dead), that's the point. It only had to be fastest on the charts. But never did it on a proper speed test, as you can control on the list of official speed records. 959 is on the list, credited as the fastest car of the time, F40 not because never did properly, so has no official record, only private tests with no certification. And was a big failure, because 959 was handicapped by 4wd, so it should have been easy for F40 to beat in top speed. The racing program started very late because there was little to no interest from the company, Enzo was dead and the car already had a great response from the market, and that was the only real goal for the car. And that became the modern trend for this kind of top supercars, they're built to be full of hps and sold at higher price possible. Since then only McLaren F1 has had a proper race program and won big on tracks, so by now is the last supercar to have achieved a race pedigree, and that's why is rightly considered the best car ever. Veyron and Chiron are tumors on 4 wheels, pure brute force and lots of electronics to prevent the driver from being killed by the ridiculous amount of power. It is the aesthetics of modern bodybuilding: exasperated exhibitionism of monstrosity in contempt of the sense of proportion and elegance. Steroids on wheels. It's sick and sad.

This car was made to celebrate Ferrari's 40th year as a constructor but the old man really wanted something showcasing the company's iconic V12's. The 2'turbo V8 was taken from the group B rally derived 288GTO and could actually make more power than the engine block could reliably handle, many GTO customers later had their cars engines upgraded to F40 power levels,
