      The "And more" part includes Pike's illusion image confronting Vina, taking her hand and heads off to the lift .
      Mean while real Pike stands by to watch.
      A bit sneaky I'd say, but Pike had to leave, knowing Vina was still being cared for.

    No offense, but I think that most of the comments missed the point. This was meant to comment on the human condition. You can have all the technology and science, but the human condition will always be the same.
    Anyone who has lived a life with a disability understands. Vena wanted to be loved, as we all do, but she did not want to live a life as an object of pity. She is not prideful, but in pain. Sometimes, there are no easy answers, no magical cures.
    Humans seldom see the person inside the shell. The Telosians' illusion let Pike accept her for who she is inside. It was truer than her reality.
    Did you note the split second of revulsion on Pike's face? People won't change in 300 years. It will take a lot longer.

      "All that they found in the wreckage was a lump of flesh, barely alive. They had never seen a human before, so they had no guide to put me back together."
      Vina explained her condition to Pike as best as she could. She was the sole survivor of the crash landing of a survey ship that was exploring the Talos star group 18 years earlier.

    It always makes me laugh when Vina says the Talosians had never seen a human before and had no idea how to put her back together again. I mean, it's got to pretty much be a universal rule that organisms have symmetry. The Talosians have it, after all. So why put a hump on one of her shoulders? What makes it perfect at the end of The Menagerie, is that Chris Pike actually does get to look what he was before the accident he had and be with Vena and I always thought as a kid watching ToS, that Vena was dead as was Pike since you didn't really see him transporting down to the planet nor Spock being there either, it was more or less "okay, here's Pike saying his farewell to his protégé and best friend (Kirk and Spock) and was fine with Kirk taking the reigns of the USS Enterprise.

    1960s TV had such dark cathartic plots and endings..Menagerie, Charlie X of Star Trek, Twilight Zone.(1959-1964).1950s TV was I Love Lucy and westerns. Alfred Hitchcock Presents in the 1950s was more sleuth murder plots. Sponsers threatened Hitchcock's show that had a magician accidentally sawing a woman in 1/2 on stage(part of the plot of course), but too gruesome for the 1950s and never aired. 10 years later on Star Trek you have Charlie taking people's faces away. We still love this stuff 50 years later with Black Mirror which was a copycat of Star Trek's Charlie X in a more nightmarish sense since it was the captain who was powerful and evil on it's premiere episode.

    It always bugged me that, in the enlightened future of the Star Trek universe, she decides to stay as a captive simply because she thinks herself too ugly to face the real world. Now if she were crippled, as Pike later would be, or suffering from intractable pain that only the Talosians could alleviate, that would be a different story.

      @SpiritBear12 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      She was crippled. It's been a very long time since I saw the full episode, but if I remember, she was in some sort of a wreck and her body broken and burned. The aliens put her back together as best as they could, but she still had difficulty walking, couldn't stand straight and was possibly in pain all day every day. When your body is like that, living each day is not a joy.
      It doesn't matter what century you're in or how enlightened people are, when you don't look like you used to esp if you have been disfigured and you are crippled and face constant physical pain it makes you feel rotten inside.

    • @josephmassaro
      @josephmassaro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Correct. She explains that the Talosians had never seen a human and put her back together the best they could. I can understand wanting to live in what is essentially the Talosian holodeck.
      Although, I always found it a bit odd that 23rd century medicine was still primitive in many ways. I would think that they could do far better for Pike and if they had a chance to treat Lena. By TNG, they had addressed some of this, but that was only 80 years later.

      Just a thought-it may have been that her injuries in the crash were so bad there were parts that were simply unusable. MAGISTRATE: Your race would learn our power of illusion and destroy itself too.

    If we knew how much "dialog" was removed, and what the dialog was, we would have a completely different take on the entire "The Menagerie" parts 1 and 2. I think in the light of all the missing dialog we would all come away with a whole new prospective. My older brother read, Star Wars in the 1970's and what it was as a paperback book, and what was taken out of the paperback book in order to get it to fit in the allotted time frame of a major big budget Hollywood movie was not the same as the book. I see the Talosians as 10th dimensional Arch Angels, with much greater psychic abilities than humans have, and I commune with them!!! and I think that if we were privy to the whole entire script, and not bits and pieces of it, a entirely new picture comes into focus and how The Talosians are Benevolent!!!

      The same way as stop motion animation. It's time consuming make up, but in the end it works the same way. That's how they did her change.

      @@mr.terwilliger5728 Yes, back in those days, special effects people worked magic to do those things.You want to hear a crazy story on the Orion slave girl scene?. They had to redo it many times because the company developing the film had no idea that she was supposed to be green.
      So every time the film came back, the Orion girl was flesh colored. They wound up painting Susan Oliver the darkest shade of green before the studio found out what was happening.
      In the end she was finally green on film.
      The developer apologized .

      Separate shots of Susan Oliver with progressively more and more makeup, edited together with lap dissolves (aka crossfades).

      @scotpens 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnbockelie3899 That's a true story, except for the fact that it wasn't Susan Oliver. It was an early green makeup test using actress Majel Barrett, who played the first officer "Number One" in the pilot and later played Nurse Christine Chapel in the series.

    Frankly the "beautiful" face looks weirder, in my opinion. Her "true appearance" just looks like a normal elderly lady, the "pretty" appearance gives me uncanny valley vibes for some reason.

    Some subtle messaging ????
    Beauty should come with a warning and “use by” date.
    It is not permanent. It can be beguiling. It is not substantial.
    Having said that, women are pretty amazing. Growing a person in your tummy is quite clever.
    Even I couldn’t do that... And I’m a bloke !!

    Horrible editing. She explained to Pike that the aliens didn't know where her parts should go after they found her in the crash. No experience with human life. This was why she was so disfigured. And doesn't show her walking away with an illusion of Pike to soothe her similar to what he wanted for her. Companionship was what she cared for, not her own beauty.
