Never appreciated the genius of the shot of Vina's transformation until now.

What they did with that backdrop painting is lovely, totally convincing.

You mean during the picnic scene? Yes, one of my favorite changes

Frankly, I like these Talosians way better than those on Discovery.

I agree - that was one thing that was really an improvement.

This episode really impacted me when I first saw it as a child in the sixties, especially Vina's transformation. It was such a visceral shock.

Well. Vina stated that when they found her, she was barely alive, and in some what mangled condition. Also she said they had never seen a human before, they had no guide to put her back together. Her ship she was on crash landed on Talos 4, she was the only living being they found in some what one piece. As for the survivors camp, those people were probably created out of what Pike's crews minds as if they were what they were expecting the survivors to look like, and of course it was all an illusion. Vina was the only real one.
The ships name : S.S. Columbia.
missing in the Talos star group over 13 years ago, the year on this episode was 2254.

I like how they say in the episode that when they put her back together they had no guide, so that's why she's all lopsided. I'm pretty sure that even if you didn't know where everything was supposed to go, you'd still make everything symmetrical. Like, maybe you wouldn't know the right shape of her shoulders, but you wouldn't make one higher than the other. Furthermore, since they can see in her mind, they'd be able to see what she or any other person she remembers looks like and would have been able to fix things. That was weak story writing.

This is in my opinion an actual plot hole, which was created by the fact that the aliens were changed in pre-production. Not sure if you know it but the aliens were originally meant to be giant crabs, but the director thought that will look too stupid, so they changed it to small men played by women and with big heads. That sentence makes perfect sense when they were giant crabs who haven't seen a human before, now that they're humanoids it doesn't make much sense in my opinion

My theory has always been the Talosians did it on purpose in order to control her. Little bastards.

It's a credit to the quality of some of the original 1965 special effects that some scenes *were not* CGI recreated. Those SFX scenes were considered to be so good that even 40+ years later, in the producers' judgement (and budget), there was little to be gained in doing them over. A good example is when the crew attacks with a super phaser rig, directly powered from the ship's star drive, in a seemingly futile attempt to blast open the Talosian elevator doors. The unaltered original film remains. (Talk about going nuts waiting for the elevator. Tiny bit of a plot hole, though... Why not try attacking the earthen embankment rather than the metallic doors?)

Wouldn't have made much difference. The Talosians probably would have just projected an image of that being unblemished, too.

@@Revan2908 the bit I like to think about is what happen the with beam from the ship big phaser canon cranked up to 11. shoot off into outer space, doing god knows what, there a hole episode there, where did it eventually hit, and was it Klingons or the Borg?

I didn't realise it when I first watched 'The Cage' but not only does Vina get all sorts of aging, aches and pains - she also gets a broken nose into the bargain!!

    • @blindandwatching
      @blindandwatching 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

She isnt aging, it's just that the aliens didnt put her together properly. I suspect that the appearance of the aliens is always an illusion, just something that Pike can relate to.

Please remove the constant distracting moving star field background. It's hard to focus on the main material with your peripheral vision being constantly bombarded.

In the picnic scene I like the city in the original better. At conventions I was able to see The Menagerie on a big screen and that city (which was hard to see on a small TV screen) just looked terrific on a big screen.

1:19 the reason Gene wanted a green lush Mojave was as a extension of what settlers did to the central valley turning it from desert to agricultural Mecca. Another was to showcase how much mankind was able to control their own environment.

Now, in the picnic scene in the right foreground it's patently obvious they are using squares of artificial grass. You really can see the join!
