He doesn’t murder them, for pete’s sake! This is a family film. He merely teaches them the lessons they needed to learn, then sends them back out into the world to do what they will with what they learned. This was Roald Dahl’s intention/theme, and the film references it well at the end when Wonka tells Charlie that everyone will be fine.

He was great as Jack Sparrow, but Gene Wilder in 1971, ad-libbing before ad-libbing was really a thing, is a classic genius. He was a genius in everything he was in. Wilder version is witty and quippy and so before its time, and JD's version was like bizarre fever dream with half baked jokes.
