    Thanks for the shave, Nick. I too love my Grandpa's Gillette. It's a bit older than yours. It saw the last pandemic this nation fought off. That one nearly killed the woman he would marry. When Grandma recovered, her name was prefixed with the Hebrew word for "life," as was the custom back then.
    That Gillette now sits in the same bathroom Grandpa shaved in, my bathroom. It's just a stone's throw from you, neighbor.
    Here's to New York showing the rest of America how to beat this bug. Here's to America learning from what we do.
    Here's to life!

      Have you ever tried Uncle Jon's shaving soaps? They get good to excellent reviews on TH-cam, but I would be interested in hearing your opinion.
      I stopped wet shaving a couple of years ago because I bought some crappy artisan soap that wasn't slick and didn't lather and I got tug, and crappy shaves.
      Anyway, this quarantine has me thinking life is too short for crappy shaves. I started watching shaving videos again, and you're my favorite.

    Thanks nick for the great content!
    I like the idea of ‘blade buffing’ - I’m going to give that a try.
    Also, for ‘ sensitive areas’ I like to reduce the blade angle initially to allow the blade to glide a little easier and then increase the blade angle ever so slightly to grab any hair that may be left behind. I’ve definitely reduced my nicks and cuts, especially in the sensitive areas.
    Thanks again for the great content, wet shaving is an awesome art and hobby.
    Have a great day and stay safe!

    Nick, have you ever had a shave soap irritate your face, leaving a burning sensation after you rinse your face. I know to use Witch Hazel this mitigate this type of irritation, however, I'm just curious if you have ever ran into to this problem with any shave soaps and does a pre-shave help to mitigate this type of irritation. I am new to wet shaving and started with Van Der Haggen Luxury which gave me a lot of irritation. Switch to Cremo which really helped. Recently got Stirling's Barbershop and it too irritated my skin, not as bad as VDH, and the post balm from Stirling really calmed the irritation. As always you give great advice and do an excellent job with your video presentations. God bless, be safe and stay healthy.

    I've noticed a similar effect to what you mentioned about blooming soap. I now think it's probably not a good idea to bloom soap because it seems like what it does is weakens and dissolves your soap away. I've been able to get perfectly fine loading results by just swirling a damp brush in the non-bloomed soap and add maybe a couple drops of water to excite the loading to the proper level before applying to the face. Soap pucks last a lot longer when I don't bloom, I've noticed.

    hey nick, I have been wet shaving for a little while now. hoping to get some advice. I am using a Merkur 34C with persona lab blue blades (EDIT: actually using the ones linked in your decription,I have a feeling i know where i got the recommendation before, lol). I seem to be cutting my face really badly. even when I go really slow and take 30 minutes to shave. I have always had a really sensitive face for shaving. often opting for an electric razor.
    I need advice on some blades or razor recommendations for sensitive faces. I don't need a super close shave personally. I would rather have a good feeling afterward with no raised bumps. I will be the first to admit my problem may just be my technique, but any insight on products that may help me would be appreciated.

      Personally I don't prefer personna blades because they seem too sharp for me. I like Astra greens or Voshkods like he used in the video. Also maybe try a preshave soap to add some extra protection. Maybe just 1 pass with the grain to start out with.

    • @drunkn711
      @drunkn711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You might need a more mild blade, try a Wilkinson Sword Salloon pack or a Derby. For me my favorite blade is Personna Med-prep blade, they are sharp but really smooth. Also you might be pushing the razor onto your face too hard, almost no pressure is the best way to shave with a safty razor. Just the weight of the razor is all the pressure needed.

    • @keithengelhart8631
      @keithengelhart8631 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drunkn711 I have to agree...just the weight of the razor. 9 times out of 10 a new shaver finds cuts from too much pressure on the razor. With cartridge razors we get used to "dragging" the razor across the face to get a close shave. With a DE keep thinking "just the weight of the razor" and think glide rather than drag.

    What you have is a Gillette Slim Adjustable. The "Fatboy" is a 195 Adjustable safety razor. The term Fatboy came out after the Slim was introduced to place them apart. The Slim has a slimmer head profile and handle. Similar adjusting mechanics. The Fatboy was manufactured from 1958-1961. The Slim was manufactured from last quarter 1961-1968. Just thought you would like to know!

    • @JohnD357
      @JohnD357 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, definitely a Slim and not a Fatboy. I love my 1959 Fatboy. I had a 1966 Slim but had to sell it because the head configurations are different and I always got a lousy shave compared to the Fatboy

    • @The_Honcho
      @The_Honcho 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      John D a tragedy haha, the trick is that the Slim’s head settings are about 1-2 above the fatboy for aggressiveness. So if you’re used to a 5 setting shave with a fatboy you’d want to use a 4 or maybe a 3 with the slim.

    • @JohnD357
      @JohnD357 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@The_Honcho It wasn't the aggressiveness that was the issue for me. It was the head geometry. The head on the Slim is thinner than the head on the Fatboy. What I found was that using the same technique of riding the cap that I use with the Fatboy resulted in stubble left after the shave with the Slim. I had to alter the angle I held the razor at against my face. I just gave up. Now I alternate between the Fatboy and a 1957 Red Tip. The head geometry is the same, so the same riding of the cap produces the same shave. I have the Fatboy set on 8.

    i shave only with the grain and 2nd pass sideways and yet alcohol based aftershave stings quite a bit everytime! so what could I do better? Using a 34c and Wilkinson Sword blades

    • @nickshaves
      @nickshaves  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The most common cause of this is using too much pressure with the razor. Otherwise it could be the blade you are using, you may want to try some smoother blades, like Voskhod, Treet (carbon, aka black beauty), or Personna

    In these Inflationary Times. HERE IS AN EASY WAY TO DO IT MY FRIENDs Use any hard Bar Soap, Tallow or Glycerin based Soaps out there? To fit in any Mugs or Cups? Like" (Mitchells' Wool Fat or Arko Sticks. Just to name a few of them?) You can mix and match your old Soaps? Cut up the soap on a paper plate, pour your soap chunks with the shavings from the Paper Plate into a Mug, cover the soap with a small amount of water, and microwave your soap. For about a minute or so? Place a paper plate under your mug in case it bubbles out of your cup? If it foams up, STOP. The water keeps it from burning itself up. (DON'T OVER WATER YOUR SOAP??) Easy, does it? Let cool don't want to Crack the Mugs or Cups you're using? (You just want it to Congeal in your Mug or Cup') it is very hot and watery'''''. let it cool in PLACE'. after it cools, put it in a Sunny Window, until the Soap hardens? When using your soaps, use Dry Brush Less Water. It thickens the soap, making it easier to use on your face. Save your Money, spend it on your wife, don't listen to the shave Mafia. It saves me time and Money. Wheelchair Larry Happy New Year. Your Mileage may vary?

    You should try a “Drug Store Shave” with a basic razor (maybe a Gillette Mach 3), a name brand shave foam (Gillette, Edge, Barbasol), and a name brand aftershave (Brut, SkinBracer, Ice Blue Aqua Velva, Aqua Velva Musk, etc.). May be interesting to hear your opinion on the materials some of us use.

    Nick it's either Gillette Adjustable aka "Gillette 195"/"Fatboy" or Gillette Slim Adjustable. I like the fat handle of the "Fatboy" and the thiner head of the Slim. Great shave 👍

    Should the adjustment be dialed while closed? Hate to see the razor ruined.

    • @JohnD357
      @JohnD357 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The adjustment should always be changed with the razor open. Otherwise, it puts undue stress on the adjustment plate.
