I am especially drawn to Vancouver, BC, where the problems with poverty, homelessness, drugs and dereliction mirror what's happening in so many American cities. I've also researched the perils and frustrations of living in high-rise, low-income housing in your cities which also mirrors our situation. I hope to visit Canada one day! Several years ago, I had a chance to move to Halifax where friends of mine live, but I wound up getting a new job here in St Paul, so I stayed.

My van broke down there and for 3 days we lived on the street in the van and had a great time. We met folks and it was fun. I was in my 50s and my daughter in her 20s. We are white. I guarantee it we had broken down in some ritzy suburb we would have had the cops called on us.

1:04 this is what happens when a homeowner puts a little effort into their property. The hood doesn’t always have to be an eyesore if the majority community would just have a little pride in where they live instead of trashing the area.
I got lost once in E. St Louis & I pulled into a gas station to get my gps going bc i had lost signal. I noticed it was mainly black folks didn't think anything until a cop pulled up behind me and walked to me asking what I was doing...i told him i was lost and he stayed there with me until I left because it was a bad area (by the stripclub).. that scared me more than the guys walking around 😆
It's like night and day when you cross the bridge into Illinois you can see the difference almost immediately. No sidewalks no street lights no parks but vacant lots with tress are everywhere, no Quick Trips, your phone will stop working because I'm sure there's no signal pins out in some of those areas but don't worry because there's no 911 in east st Louis everybody knows you don't call them not when their the Mafia. No police stations and you will never see a library ever. If there is a sidewalk it looks like it had an earthquake. If there's a train you have to wait for it
I'm in agreement with the comment under the North St.Louis hoods, East St.Louis really is a ghost town, I know it has a violent reputation but it doesn't look half as bad as the hoods of Baltimore, Philadelphia, Oakland or Detroit.
This was a tour of the projects. They are bad but there are other areas just as bad if not worse. My old hood is one of the worst places in East St. Louis.

It’s so sad seeing people live like this. The people living here need to understand that the government is not coming to clean up the trash in the streets like rich parts of the country. I don’t doubt it came from them, you can’t just throw your trash in the street because you’ve always lived in the slums and think the place isn’t worth the effort. It shows laziness. I know that hood is full of kids and young men. Young men that can move. Start a neighborhood clean up program. The city isn’t going to help you.
My dad lived in a nearby town called Dupo in the early 60s when he was a teenager. My grandma worked in ESL. The area was already pretty rough around the edges back then. Nothing like it is now, but it was no Leave it to Beaver suburbia either. East of the river was always the place to find all the vices openly practiced that St Louis didn't want, like gambling and brothels and 24-hour taverns and what-not. You can still see that division to this day, with the east side of the river dotted with all-night strip clubs and of course a giant riverboat casino.
Drug war. Police state. Corrupt politicians on both sides blue and red. Racism. Class warfare. Military industrial complex. A ridiculous credit system. Also, we don't make anything anymore , so no industries. On top of that...there is Corporate greed, and corruption. This is all over the world too. Pretty much the rich getting richer, and the people are getting fucked. That's why shit is getting burned down, protest, etc. People are pissed. And they have every right to be.
Looks like they finally tore down all the abandoned buildings - got everyone living in Projects now. Some improvement anyway. Back in the day, I had friends lived there. It was a bustling, busy city. I grew up in University City. Much has changed since the 1960’s, 1970’s.

City. Can’t remember exactly where the Cousins lived - somewhere closer to Sauget, I believe. Can’t remember exactly - that was many many decades ago. We used to have small parties, and listen to Dr.Jockinstein. “Dr. Jockinstine operating on your mind - on W-W-W-W-EEEEE-S-L - with the Mighty Mighty T.C.” I met “ The Dr.” once. He was a very nice, caring, down to earth person. Very intelligent, and sharp. Laid back. Fun. Anyway...... 📻🙂

Left behind a whole furnished little house , toys included. 62nd street. Grandpa waggoner stayed there all his life till late 1980s. Visited back there in 1980, i still remember all the green open spaces. 2nd time visited my aunt 10 yrs later she said no way can we even drive through there.

In the mid 90's I worked Security for the Housing Authority. A lot of memories here on some of those streets and in those complexes. A good friend of mine passed away last week. He was a retired E. St. Louis Fire Fighter (20 years).
I just noticed some smaller cities/towns touching east St. Louis that you might wanna explore Alorton Cahokia Centreville Washington Park and Brooklyn (Lovejoy) with all the strip clubs in it

In the mid 90's I worked Security for the Housing Authority. A lot of memories here on some of those streets and in those complexes. A good friend of mine passed away last week. He was a retired E. St. Louis Fire Fighter (20 years).

My grandmother worked at the Holiday Inn in ESL back in the 50s, back when it was possible to even have a nice hotel there. Or a nice anything for that matter.
