- For a few years, St. Louis, Missouri was labeled the murder capital of the United States. "The Gateway to the West" has consistently been ranked through the years as one of the top three most dangerous cities in the U.S. St. Louis leads the major U.S. cities in murder rates, while East St. Louis leads all U.S. cities regardless of size in murder rates. Most of the crime in St. Louis, Missouri occurs on the north side, and this video shows you some parts of the north side.

I have a buddy named Clark from Chicago. He took his family on a trip to California, they of course had to drive through St. Louis along their trip. Poor guy ended up taking the wrong exit and ended up in these neighborhoods. He thankfully made it out okay, but he did unfortunately get his hub caps stolen when he was asking for directions to get back to the expressway.
I think I know the same guy. Did he drive a green station wagon ? 😂

Thank you for making this video and thank you for actually talking about what led to the neighborhoods getting as bad as they got. I would just like to say it wasn’t that long ago and we all know plenty of people who participated in the racist practices you spoke of. I own a house just outside of the West End that was built in 1899. My grandparents were the first Black people to ever live in the home because up until 1962, no one Black was allowed to buy it. When doing research on my property because I want to keep a historic record of who has lived in the house, I found a newspaper from 1962 that explicitly stated “the house was now open Negroes” the asking price was also higher than it had been a few months before they’d decided to open the sell of the house to everyone. My dad was born in 1960 and he said by the time he was in school (1967) there were no more White people in his neighborhood. They’d all sold their homes to incoming Black people and left for the county and then his street and many others were redlined, which is what you were talking about but just to state it plainly: banks denied service to people who had addresses in those areas. So, again, thank you for stating facts and thanks for making the video but people way back in the day may have made some messed up laws but it was our parents and grandparents that kept them going.

What? The first wave of Black people who moved to those areas were lower middle class. My family didn’t start experiencing financial problems until the 1980s and part of that was because of the redlining and a lot of my aunts and uncles had moved out of the house so there wasn’t as much income coming in. My grandfather and most of his sons did carpentry and masonry work and my grandmother was a seamstress. People leaving in the 1960s were fleeing color, not crime or stereotypes.

Great video! I left STL in November of 2021 to help my aging parents in Florida but owned a big truck and ran it out of there for 4 years. The next time you're up there, take a look at Old North St Louis, a hotbed of preservation and home of the famous Crown Candy Kitchen, a deli that has been in business for over 100 years. The menu is great and the neighborhood has a lot of independent thinkers trying to make it right.
That area is in rapid decline now.

I worked as a community organizer in St. Louis 92-93. You had to know where it was safe to go and where NOT to go. Particuarly "hot" were areas of dispute between rival gangs. Rates for kids suffering from lead poisoning were higher in St. Louis than almost anywhere else in the country.

@@fabiolee6698 I had "turf" I did organizing in where I would door knock folks and try to get them to join a community organization, ACORN. I worked to the east of where you are talking about although I did do visits to that area looking for people whose kids had tested positive for led poisoning. A fair amount of activity in that area but not "hot". I did have one run in with some gangbangers but the head guy was pretty cool when I explained what it was I was doing there. This was back in the early 90's and at the time, almost everywhere was somewhat dangerous in St. Louis

Those were all our favorite neighborhoods. As a child to young adult those were our play grounds and bicycle routes doing most anything to grasp the areas. Thanks for the uploads and the dedicated efforts to gather facts and see the areas of recent.
I love this one bc I grew up in North St. Louis and attended many schools through Central High the final chapter of my schooling. Class of "69"
I do get to go through the old hood and have taken my children through to show where my roots are set in stone.
The old saying you can't go home.
That rings in my memory and although I'll still call St. Louis, my birth Home and from toddler through young adult it was the greatest.

People don’t understand the geographical size of “THE CITY” of St. Louis is pretty small. Regardless, the small NORTH CITY section is amazingly screwed up. So screwed up they blew a multi-billion dollar deal on the “NorthSide Regeneration Project”. Houses falling in on themselves that haven’t had taxes paid in years “should” have just been given to this project to kickstart it after years of buying properties. When people found out what was going on, they started making RIDICULOUS requests for money on “their homes”.. The group had been buying property left and right for $1000-$5000 beforehand. Then people who just had a name attached to a burned up, caved in house wanted $100k-$250k for it. Not viable to rebuild a community at those prices no matter how you slice it. EVERYONE lost because of greed.
I drive through here every time I have to go to the VA and it's a sad and depressing drive every time...

I guess I understand the speeding up of the video, but it gives me a little vertigo.
Lived in STL for 10 years (2008-2018). I am prior military, so lived in many different parts of the country and the world. STL was by far my favorite. I only left due to a personal situation that required it. The only time I ever felt uneasy in STL was after night ball games after they banned CCW in the stadium. At the time I moved away, there had been 2 people killed going from the stadium to their cars. So the Metro was our preferred method of getting to and from the games. STL is a great city in which to live. It's a shame that a small area can give a whole city a bad rep like this.
Lived in STL for 75 years. Some of those neighborhoods I wouldn't want to fly over, however I only had one armed robbery 60 years ago being in a place I was told not to go into by my Father. Forest Park by the Boat House, usually relatively safe.
I grew up in St Louis got out as soon as I could. I wouldn't move back if someone gave me a house.
There are a lot of really bad places you definitely need to stay out of. No matter what race you are, you not safe. You didn't go to some of those places.
My parents are buried in St Louis and I am afraid to go to the cemetery

Pretty much how i feel. St.Louis was a great place to call home till about 10 years ago. All the factories on the river are no longer there and a lot of manufacturering has left St.Louis. the result is a crime ridden community. People have to work to get what they want. You can not have a successful community with out a good industrial base.

@@StephenASmith-lm6gz on the North and East of the “red line” are buildings that look like a bomb went off. Reminds me of old WW1 & WW2 footage when I have to drive through the areas. UPS Ground Freight Hub is located just off Mississippi River in this area. Unless you take a goofy route to get there, you are forced to drive through the area or damn close to it.

Stayed on the North Side over 4th of July weekend thanks to online hotel reservations and am not surprised about the violent crime. We found Downtown STL to be sketchy as well, even by Memphis/NOLA standards.
Downtown has a lot of homeless people you need to watch out for, especially if you're alone. I had one guy follow me for like 10 blocks constantly asking for money.
When Memphis looks good by comparison...

Lived in downtown 8 years, and moved after a single mom was violently car jacked and killed in cold blood right on Wash Ave. They then torched the lady's vehicle down the road. That right there was enough to send me to the burbs. Still haunts me 5 years later!

What if this area looked half as good as the southside? I believe it would be a very desirable place to live and a tourist destination. I can see why you like the design elements in the overall city. I'm spending a week in st louis right now actually. I'm very happy you mentioned that it's mainly Northside crime because most of St. Louis is nice and has excellent international food choices. There's poorer areas too like every other city. The only "rough" looking parts are towards the river south of the city, north side like you show, and east st louis in Illinois across the bridge. The funny thing is, go more east past that and it's nice suburbs again. If you don't hit those rough parts, I felt fine personally

My grandma used to live off of Jefferson and her house was leveled 4-5 years ago to make room for that development shown at 4:00 . It's crazy to see how much that area has changed since my childhood.

Just visited STL and I loved it. I was right next too the baseball stadium and my dad told me not too go too the shell gas station down the street because it was “sketchy”. But I wanted a Gatorade and some sour skittles so I went down there and there was a bunch of dudes freestyling over a bucket beat. ❤️ STL

In visiting for work found super interesting architecture, and wasn’t in touristy areas, but just regular neighborhoods like your driving through. Sad to see some beautiful buildings empty and stunning churches rotting, assuming people who originally lived there moved out. Hope crime issues can be addressed and some solutions to repopulate

The whole attitude people have for one another here just kills the city. The way people drive is a perfect example. I don't know if anyone keeps track of it, but the stl metro area has to be home to the most reckless drivers in the country.
@@jjustice2006 valid point. I drive Uber/Lyft in downtown STL “if” I get dragged in that area from the MUCH safer county areas. When I get tourist in my car I tell them straight away “We WILL be slowing to a near stop at ALL intersections for your safety and mine. Red lights and stop signs mean NOTHING down here. Not trying to rack up the fair. I just want to go home tonight.” Of course they say they “understand”... Then we get to a green light and a car will blow through their red light at 70-80 mph. I’ve amassed a huge amount of dash-cam clips to show riders so they know I’m not kidding.

Really i am 65 years old my mother was born in 1920 and raised in north St louis i have been through north St louis many times all my life and that area that was driven through in this area has been vacant and desolate for over two and half decades for the same reason the crime is out of control what you see in this area is from the results of voting for useless lying democrats oh by the way St louis is controlled by democratic leaders now which will bring no change .
You're on St Louis Ave about to turn left on Grand Boulevard at 11:17. The vacant field across the street to the right is the site of the old Carter Carburetor factory which brought out one of the first 4 barrel carbs and supplied the auto industry for years. It was an EPA Superfund site but recently cleaned up. I used to pass this site on heading to the Veterans Administration hospital a few blocks south on Grand.
In case of thermonuclear war, the new NGA facility will be a secondary target. Couldn't have picked a better place to build it!
I lived in North St. Louis in the Northside and went to schools around the water tower on North Grand. Used to go to the Movies at the Tower Grove Theater. I went to Central High school in Central High, close to Grand Park, and the old St. Louis Cardinals Sportsman Stadium. I did not see any of this on any of your videos, however, I understand you can't cover it all. Thank you for your efforts. BTW I used to work at the IGA store on 25th and Bremen next to Irving elementary school. When I lived there back in the 60's it was nice and clean.. Lots of great memories.

@@ChrisHarden it's really enjoyable. I've got skin in the Saint Louis game, so the neighborhood tours are a resource as I try to get the best bite on the stl apple. I think what happened to East Stl should be an American outrage, a national embarrassment. Did west Illinois lose a war or something? I want to work on the property, but see the people. We can't fix the land without fixing the people.

you literally live in the city with the best museums in the country. i mean, who else is a cubs fan? even when I lived in chi-town, I liked the sox 'cause Frank Thomas and all.
don't go out at night. the zoo is safe if you stay nearby it but don't venture around that park especially at night. Downtown is not safe honestly, maybe stay near the arch if you want to do that
I was born in the Dutch Town neighborhood in the South St Louis city in the St Alexis Hospital it was pretty dangerous growing up there as a kid
The NGA facility is going in where the old Pruitt-Igoe housing project once stood. It was designed by Minory Yamasaki, a famous architect who did a lot of buildings in Detroit, the World Trade Center and St Louis Airport. The government kept meddling in the design process taking away many of the planned features and it was a segregated project essentially guaranteeing it's failure. A notorious part of St Louis history. You may have noticed the old Falstaff Brewery next door which is now lofts.
Raised on the North only makes you a more aware person, south side was a vacation when I visited family and friends 🤣
The decline of st. Louis makes me sad, always hoping for a turnaround for this great city.

Well I had a couse in south city and it broken into 3xs in a year. Grew up in Webster in St Louis County we had at least 4 breaking and lots of vandalism. I live in South County and cars are constantly being broken into. Mine is always locked. I don't go down to the city anymore because it's not safe.
When i am in the ( CWE ) Central West End i am extremely aware that Delmar is just a stone throw away from where i'm eating at . The zip codes of 63112 & 63108 sit next to the zip codes 63107 63106 63115 and 63113 . I absolutely love all of the videos of St Louis hoods and hoods across the country. One question did you drive through the JVL here in the STL ? I grew up in South St Louis off of Cherokee and Cahokia Illinois , but l live in Creve Coeur it's nice out here. i am a fairly new resident of saint louis having been here only a little over two years and i have only had my car window smashed out but other than that no problems. the thing that bothers me most are the outrageous property taxes here . i lived in florida before i moved up here and my taxes down there were not even half of what they are up here and my home here isnt worth even half of what i had down there. i would really like to know what they do with all of the property taxes they raise because they sure dont spend any on roads and infrastructure. i live in the area they call riverview and yea its a little ruff but not nearly as bad as some of those neighborhoods you drove through.

Wow!! It's crazy seeing my old stomping grounds on video. My Father lived on Penrose near Fair, next door to my Grandparents. I spent my Senior Year of High School at my Aunts house on Lee and Fair (Its a complicated story). Even though I actually grew up in U. City my entire childhood and attended U. City High School Class of '83. Which is the Year I left St. Louis for good to join the Military. However, I still go back and visit because I still have a lot of family still residing in The Lou. Thanks for the video footage and I would like to see the North Side revived because it didn't look as bad when I was little. And crime wasn't as bad either.
I lived in Jennings and left in 82 for the Navy. Did you happen know the family of Reedus from U. City? They were my cousins and they were well-known for reasons that I can't mention a year, LOL

I spent a lot of time in Jennings though. I had some cousins (step-cousins) there. But if you left in '82 you were a year older than us, but you may know them. Harrington was their last name.

Thank for sharing the fact that St. Louis is not all bad and that you actually like the city. While I love seeing these video's, I do not like people that knowing lie about facts concerning certain cities. I grew up in the North Pointe neighborhood and went to Herzog and Northwest High School.
I live on the Southside of St. Louis MO! Some areas here are worse than the north because everybody from the north ends up moving south. So all the separate gangs in different hoods end up moving to the same hoods on the south! Think about how that turns out?!?

Lived in St. Louis City 38 years, 1964-83, 2003-present. Driven every bit of the areas you have shown here, as well as your Southside video, Wildwood, MO. All interesting. A former co-worker, a black man, told me St. Louis is the most racist place he has ever lived. Felt horrible for him because I grew up respecting everyone I lived around. That was not his experience.
Lmao people act like the world gonna just bite you up if you leave your house. Stls crime rate is terrible and yes you should always be aware of where you are going in any city you're in but... the north side was a very welcoming place while volunteering at a food kitchen. It was located in the heart of vandeventer in someones personal home so it was a real experience. I got to feel like part of the community. The community vibe is strong and people look out for each other.
I managed a bank in N. St. Louis for about 4 years in the late 1990s, early 2000s. Only one hold up and the perp got off with only a few hundred bucks thanks to a street-wise teller. My customers were mostly older and most of them were golden. Main daily problem was their kids and grand kids coming in with forged personal checks trying to steal what little money the old folks managed to have. Really sad. Still have nightmares of being down there, day after day, sitting on about 100K cash in the vault.

I just visited STL at the end of Summer. While I was there,I wanted to pay homage to Chuck Berry and visit the home where 'Johnny B Goode' and other legendary Rock N Roll songs were written. It was exciting to see such a historic musical place,but also saddening to to see the state of the area that surrounds it. When we got out of the car,we were met with stares from the locals as well as the smell of poverty in the air.
It sure is sad. Downtown still can be a fun experience but like you said, once you get a little bit outside of downtown in some areas, it’s pretty rough.
If you're trying to joke about poverty, I hope they do more than stare next time.

Places like Belleville just over the state line are nice to live when you don't want to rough it in the city.

This video missed other really great Northside neighborhoods. Debaliviere, The Ville, North Kingshighway , and the area known around The Circle -- in North City where 5 major boulevards meet: Goodfellow, Halls Ferry, Riverview, W. Florrisant, and Lewis and Clark.
North city and county give St.Louis a bad name...
