Have You Ever Wondered How Elephants Eat Thorny Branches?

  • Discover just how elephants eat thorny branches when grazing in the bush, without hurting themselves, as Owen and Adine share insight into their feeding behaviour. With winter here, the bush is drier and the elephants move from eating grass to hardier vegetation like branches, bark, roots, bulbs and thorns!
🌿 Owen explains how elephants eat thorny branches:
"So what happens is when the elephants grip the thorn bushes, they pull them over right straight close to the mouth. And then inside the mouth, elephants create so much saliva so that they can soften the thorns to not hurt them inside their mouths. And when they're feeding, they'll be so very careful."
"You can see the tongue, how it brings over the thorn bush right straight in the mouth so that they can direct it straight to on the molar. And also, the saliva will be helping them to bring over all those thorns into the molar’s position so that they can grind it nicely."
🌿 Owen explains how elephants break branches:
"So the thorn trees they are quite so different among themselves. Some are so easy for elephants to break into a small branch. And then some of the thorn bushes they need to hold it with the trunk and then bring over that branch close to the tusk so that they can easily break it using the tusk."
"So for breaking the branches, there's so many ways. Some of the bushes, the thorn bushes, they can use their foot. They can hold nicely with the trunk and then pull it over with the foot."
Adine adds that Limpopo and Khanyisa use different methods to break branches because of their age difference.

Very interesting that even little Khanyisa eats the thorns of mimosa the tree. God created them, and their ability to eat thorn branches too. Amazing 😊❤. Thank you, Adine and Owen for sharing 😊❤👋❤.

It is totally amazing how the elephants 🐘 can eat those thorny bushes. The size of some of those thorns are huge and how they push them into the back of their mouths is crazy. A human could never do that. I can just imagine how tuff the inside of their mouths must be. Thank you Owen snd Adine for another lesson about these gentle giants. Love ❤️ from Florida. ❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❤️

It is very impressive how they are eating branches with thorns especially those of the Mimosa which are quite big, like little swords (even our pink Baby can do that perfectly) The nature has been kind to the Elephants by making them able to survive in harsh conditions to which they are perfectly adapted and in full harmony ❤️🐘❤️

They have an amazing chewing mechanism, but it’s still a wonder that the tongue, while pushing those thorny branches toward the molars, doesn’t get poked full of holes! Thank you Owen. These lessons educate me, and I am guessing many viewers, that elephants have evolved over thousands of years adapting to their environment. The elephants are important to the eco system, I have head new growth is stimulated in some plants, shrubs, and trees with the elephants as "arborists" pruning the landscape. I love the talks making it possible to understand the different personalities, the individual character of the herd members, see each one as an individual and not a cookie cutter.

I've often wondered about those huge thorns.. Their trunk, tusks, and mouths are a marvel of evolution.. From a human pov, it looks as though they risk biting their tongue as they push in their food, which of course is why there's no cutting teeth at the front! It'd be interesting to compare them with Asian elephants who have a diet of lush green leaves and sometimes fruit.
