Fun Fact: This scene was added spontaneously. A member of the band "The Avalon Boys" was on set and played this song during a break. They actually sang it live, except for Stan's low and high parts.

You're thinking of the soft shoe shuffle scene, which wasn't in the shooting script (the Lonesome Pine scene, on the other hand, *was* in the script). It's now believed that the dance idea arose spontaneously during a filming break.

I would also like to add that Stan Laurel learned early on in their film career how important the camera look was in a scene to get another laugh. No one could do the cameral look better than Oliver Hardy could when Stan did something stupid or was in the process of doing it. It made it all the funnier. Ollie did the camera look several times in this film and that really added to it. This is one of their best. A couple of more of my favorites that they did was "Towed in a Hole" and " County Hospital". Their will never be another pair like them.

I love the little flourish Hardy did with the mallet before he handed it back to the bartender!
This was the days when singing belonged to the every-day ordinary guy. When it was time to sing the national anthem, someone led it, but EVERYBODY SANG IT!
Today, we apparently must drag a "star" out of the bowels of The Entertainment Industry to do it for us... and they get up and butcher it so that nobody can sing along! I wouldn't mind taking a mallet to some of them!

+Vincent Macek I was born in 72, but I remember them playing this very video on Top of the Pops. My entire family was entertained as it played, as everyone stopped to watch it.
It's still a classic all these years later. Superb :)

@@CartoonsKick The song was originally written in 1913, and you can be sure it would have been all but forgotten by now if it hadn't been for Laurel & Hardy's performance in _Way Out West_

Beautiful. Babe could sing - I mean, properly sing. And the timing is note-perfect - from 1:20 to 1:40 Babe does all the work to set up the gag (despite not having a line) and Stan gets the punchline. They were perfect together - nobody else comes close.
