I dont say this often but i genuinely believe Stan and Oliver would be proud of what these two remarkable actors have done in their honor. I could go into lots of detail about why this scene is so great. But this is officially my new favourite movie, saw it when it first came out and I will be there cash in hand for when DVD sales go live. I have been a fan of Laurel and Hardy since i was a small child. I have their collective works on DVD (Laurel and Hardy Collection) I saw this movie with my uncle, he hadn't seen their movies like i had, and wasn't caught up on all the references. I was in pieces during these last few minutes and while lots of people probably saw two men just doing a funny dance (most likely not everyone in the movie theaters were all Laurel and Hardy fans) I was in floods of tears because I knew what these final few minutes of the film represented. I 100% Agree I watched with a massive lump in my throat, my Grandmother was a little girl at Stan N' Ollie's peak, and I admit I cried...and smiled as I for a brief few minutes felt and pictured my Grandma....dancing. Thanks for sharing.

This is the only ending to a film that has almost made me cry. They were true legends and Steve Coogan and John Reily were robbed of an Oscar for this film.
I always watch this with tears in my eyes, but smiling at the same time. You'd be hard pressed today to find a double act so committed to each other, RIP boys. You were and are, still loved by fans old and new.
Me too I cried so much with tears of joy and in a way pride in them they beat the odds and finished to a brilliant reprised version of their second most popular song and I'm only 14 this is an incredible film
& the silent, reassuring moment between the 2 wives. All 4 characters said more without saying anything at all. Exquisite eye to emotional detail. Ollie's brave endurance w/ the sweat pouring off him...Stan's hesitancy & affection...the shadows symbolizing their decline...Just brilliant.

It's a sad but happy ending to me. Knowing Ollie would be gone soon after. But at same time. The two of them still had it, and could still bring down the house. All of my child hood idols are all long gone. Laurel and Hardy, Buster Keaton, The Three Stooges, Clayton Moore, Roy Rogers, and John Wayne. Today there's not a tenth of the talent, charisma, charm, class and pure love for their fans and work today that these men had.
I’m an 82 year old woman with tears in my eyes and a stirring in my heart after watching this wonderful depiction of Stan and Ollie. I grew up watching them on TV and to this day they make me laugh. Such blessings to our lives.❤
As a Laurel & Hardy fan, I went to the theater to see this movie with some trepidation. What a wonderful and beautiful surprise. I have watched John & Steve in this film several times since and am grateful to them and the makers of this film for bringing back Stan & Ollie. They all did right by the Boys.
I heard that when Stan retired he allowed his phone number to be listed and would actually talk to fans on the phone and have full conversations with them.
I was born in early 60's.. and black and white TV showed so much L&H, almost compulsory viewing.. Saturday mornings, afternoons etc... it was always on.... Always a different one... I certainly count my blessings.. I feel honoured to have been made to laugh by them and their Zany ways... R.I.P you 2 Stars
This scene is fantastic, Jon S. Baird is fantastic in his direction here. It seems sweet but is so powerfully saddening. As Ollie pulls Stan off the stage for the line “I’ll miss us when we’re gone”, you see the moment that Stan becomes overwhelmed with emotion and reverts to hide behind his act by replying with a quip, showing that he is incapable of normal human interaction and is always trying to entertain/ is scared to show his true feelings. Next, comes the camera lingering on their shadows on the stage. I’ve always been fascinated why they chose to shot the climax like this- as I thought it offered no real spectacle. However, this is not the point. It lingers on the shadow because it’s showing us they are literally “shadows” of their former selves. Fallen from the silver screen to the hard wooden floors of a UK theatre tour. The shadow itself represents the timelessness; no wrinkles, no defects just an iconic silhouette of a double act still beloved around the world today. Immortal. Lastly, the position on the camera behind them. This offers a similar interpretation, although the audience is obscured by the lights. It doesn’t want us to think of the audience of that specific show but a universal one- the audience of future generations that still watches them today, and will continue to forever. That central light in the middle of them as the dance finishes is like a light at the end of the tunnel. This is the dog end of their career and they’re finally coming to an end. Not only was their star power dying, but so where they. This is only solidified by the text to come up after saying how Ollie died several months after, leaving that image of the two dancing into the light seared into the audiences minds. With a final loving exchange towards each other; the film ends, as does their story. Surrounded by laughter and cheers, but penniless till their last days. A fantastic film, even if you’re not a fan of Laurel and Hardy.
Chill Wills’ yodeling was the perfect music for Stan and Ollie to dance to. Still puts an ache in my heart and moisture in my eyes. Another fine mess they have gotten me into. ❤❤❤❤❤
This is a really a fine film. And as a Laurel and Hardy fan from very, very early years I can say that I know the whole production of this movie was done with a lot of reverence and love of their subjects. They're paying their respects and it shows.

Thank you so much for posting this, I bawled like a baby at this scene :-( Ollie died the year I was born 1957, but my father made sure my brother and I were indoctrinated into the world of Stan & Ollie.
It's always bittersweet watching this type of movie seeing two great comedy legends knowing that they don't get nearly as much love as some other duos. But the thing that made these two really special for me was in spite of the arguments, the lack of success with their last movies and every other struggle they went through was their long lasting friendship. Despite not being as well known as they once were, their influence is still being felt to this day, from a legendary actor who read a special prayer at Stan's funeral to the catchphrase of one of TV funniest cartoon characters to another famous actor who had similar friendship to these two and when his friend departed he took a similar vow to Stan's never to portray one of his most iconic characters ever again without him. My dad introduced me to these two and if I ever have kids of my own I will be sure to introduce them to Stan and Ollie as well.

That kind of change can wreck havoc on anyone's health, not just that of an aging, overweight chronic smoker.
What still comes through, after all the years, is also the reason their work endures. They truly liked each other. That informs everything they did. Focusing on their shadows was especially poignant, because they exist now only as shadows.

I was even afraid it might be too much. But laughter is the human thing, a gift, and my relative was laughing at just the places Stan and Ollie wanted him to, clearly following along. I had loved (note the word) the Boys all my life - NEVER "grew out" of them (TBTG), but it was then that I realised there was MORE here. Various "chance" things had to happen to bring the British guy and the American together, and they did not always get on. But they believed in what they could do, and created something true and eternal out of their innocence and gentlemanliness, which was their impenetrable spiritual armour. We have rosy spectacles about the past, but a bit of research will show readily enough how evil the crime and corruption and excess of LA in the late 20s and 30s was. These guys rode smooth-shod over that, even though very occasionally their plots and comedy hinted at it. As characters they were regularly mistreated and misunderstood by authority figures of all kinds in their movies. But they were an antidote to evil things, and still are. The above movie of truth and tribute tells us more about why...
I absolutely love a good biopic - but this one clearly stands head & shoulders above all. Steve Coogan and, in particular John C. Rielly both deserved oscars for thier portrayals of this wonderful comedy team.
This movie is just so heartwarming and masterfully executed at the same time. It really touches me every time I watch it and tells such an amazing story.
I remember watching a compilation film of Stan and Ollie s work as a kid and at the end of the film a voice over said 'off into the distance and into memory we will never see their like again' and he is so dam right no one today comes close to these two legends
A beautiful end scene, crafted to immortalize the genius of Stan and Babe. Maybe it happened exactly that way, maybe not. It doesn't matter. What is important is how much love these men had for each other, even though they spat like brothers. I've loved Stan and Babe my whole life, and am a proud member of The Sons of the Desert. I was a kid in the 70s, and in 1975 Trail of the Lonesome Pine was a surprise hit. My dear dad had it on 7". It introduced me to Way Out West, and the utter joy of that dance. And their films. The Music Box, Saps at Sea, Sons of the Desert. My kids are currently 7 and 10 and they still literally scream with laughter at Chaplin. (As well as loving all the modern stuff too!). They prefer the silent Stan and Ollie, I think it's the simplicity of the early ones.
They were real troopers..to the end. To quote a line from one of the L&H LP's"And our thanks to you..Mr.Laurel and Mr.Hardy..for giving us..many hours of Comic Diversion".
I once saw a home video of Laurel & Hardy. Oliver was trying to hug Stan's daughter, and she was afraid of him. He was always abusing Stan in the movies and she took it seriously. She was very young.
This was not the last public appearance of Laurel & Hardy..when they returned to the States..in 1954..they were the surprise guests on Mr.Edwards TV show"This Is Your Life" and..they would later film a greeting for "the Water Rats Club"for the Brittish tv series"This Is Music Hall"..they boys also appeared at a western clothing store. They were slated to write, produce and perform on a mini series of filmed tv comedy specials(that were to be shot in color at The Hal Roach Studios)..but..because of their failing health.."The Fabulous Fables Of Laurel & Hardy"never came to fruition.
For me, the definitive essay is still Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy by John McCabe. The tours are covered in depth and the book also contains Stan's notes on different topics and his opinions. Well worth the effort if you can find this iconic book from the esrly 60's.
One thing I would love to point out about this scene is the camera angles. The shots where it's just their shadows has so much meaning in it. It shows how this is their final moments and it is like they're still dancing together in their graves. Also, when it's the shadows, you can't tell that it's really just actors. If you made this picture black and white and only showed the parts with the shadows, people would think it was the real Laurel and Hardy.
I could be wrong. But, I know Ollies health was failing at this point. And he knew he would be unable to continue performing after this show. I know they did not do this dance until the final show because of his health. But being the consignment pro, Oliver wanted to finish with the much beloved dance they did in { Way Out West } So they did it. If what I read is correct, He had a heart attack a short time after. Again I could be wrong , but that's what I think. I would have loved to had been able to see these guys live.
I posed the question as to whether or not they did the dance at all on this tour in a FB L&H FanClub. The resident expert who wrote the book about their British tours was vehement that they did not.

Saw this film twice & would see it again. A tender tribute to 2 gentle funny men who dearly loved each other.
I saw it four times in the theatre and have since downloaded it and have seen it for a fifth!

For all its flaws, this film was a fitting Valentine to the boys.

This movie is just so heartwarming and masterfully executed at the same time. It really touches me every time I watch it and tells such an amazing story.

I remember watching a compilation film of Stan and Ollie s work as a kid and at the end of the film a voice over said 'off into the distance and into memory we will never see their like again' and he is so dam right no one today comes close to these two legends
That's 'Laurel and Hardy's Laughing 20's'. I also used to watch it as a kid.

A beautiful end scene, crafted to immortalize the genius of Stan and Babe. Maybe it happened exactly that way, maybe not. It doesn't matter. What is important is how much love these men had for each other, even though they spat like brothers. I've loved Stan and Babe my whole life, and am a proud member of The Sons of the Desert. They take women, too!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

There will never be another comedy team like Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy again. I always watched these guys with my grandfather on Saturdays and Sunday afternoons. Fun times.
Well at least we still have The Umbilical Brothers, Aunty Donna, Superwog Smooch, The Jackass guys(minis Ryan Dunn) so that's a good thing and you me and my friend are going to become a comedy group one day in the future and we are going to be like all the world's funniest comedians

I was a kid in the 70s, and in 1975 Trail of the Lonesome Pine was a surprise hit. My dear dad had it on 7". It introduced me to Way Out West, and the utter joy of that dance. And their films. The Music Box, Saps at Sea, Sons of the Desert.
My kids are currently 7 and 10 and they still literally scream with laughter at Chaplin. (As well as loving all the modern stuff too!). They prefer the silent Stan and Ollie, I think it's the simplicity of the early ones.
They were real troopers..to the end. To quote a line from one of the L&H LP's"And our thanks to you..Mr.Laurel and Mr.Hardy..for giving us..many hours of Comic Diversion".

I once saw a home video of Laurel & Hardy. Oliver was trying to hug Stan's daughter, and she was afraid of him. He was always abusing Stan in the movies and she took it seriously. She was very young.
The only things I don't like about this movie is 1. They never had a falling g out and 2 their tour in the uk was a huge success
They did have a falling out a few times in their days
This was not the last public appearance of Laurel & Hardy..when they returned to the States..in 1954..they were the surprise guests on Mr.Edwards TV show"This Is Your Life" and..they would later film a greeting for "the Water Rats Club"for the Brittish tv series"This Is Music Hall"..they boys also appeared at a western clothing store. They were slated to write, produce and perform on a mini series of filmed tv comedy specials(that were to be shot in color at The Hal Roach Studios)..but..because of their failing health.."The Fabulous Fables Of Laurel & Hardy"never came to fruition.

When I first heard that John was playing Oliver I couldn't see it...but when I heard him speak in the trailer I saw it.
Nobody has come closer to authenticate the boys than John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan.
For me, the definitive essay is still Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy by John McCabe. The tours are covered in depth and the book also contains Stan's notes on different topics and his opinions. Well worth the effort if you can find this iconic book from the esrly 60's.
One thing I would love to point out about this scene is the camera angles. The shots where it's just their shadows has so much meaning in it. It shows how this is their final moments and it is like they're still dancing together in their graves. Also, when it's the shadows, you can't tell that it's really just actors. If you made this picture black and white and only showed the parts with the shadows, people would think it was the real Laurel and Hardy.
I disagree with your assessment of the shadows. I think it more represented that they began their teamup as "shadows" on the screen.
I think the shadows suggested that their ghosts are still dancing in all the places they played.

I could be wrong. But, I know Ollies health was failing at this point. And he knew he would be unable to continue performing after this show. I know they did not do this dance until the final show because of his health. But being the consignment pro, Oliver wanted to finish with the much beloved dance they did in { Way Out West } So they did it. If what I read is correct, He had a heart attack a short time after. Again I could be wrong , but that's what I think. I would have loved to had been able to see these guys live.
I posed the question as to whether or not they did the dance at all on this tour in a FB L&H FanClub. The resident expert who wrote the book about their British tours was vehement that they did not.
