Its well documented that long term OTR drivers have considerably shorter life spans than the average person. Sure you still see many in their 60s and a few in their 70s but the lifestyle isn't conducive to a long healthy life. You could probably write a book for all the reasons why but it's a young single man's gig short-term. It pays better than it ever has but when you factor in all the expenses and downside your better investing in your education or a healthier career. Not many wealthy owner operators that retire and live to enjoy it.

Nobody owes you cheap rent in the place you want to live, nobody owes you a job that will pay whatever you consider a "living wage". The dude in this call is just starting out in life, has no skills, and commensurately makes very little money. As he improves himself, his employment will improve, and so will his options for living spaces. The girlfriend also needs to be working. In my area, she could be making $15/hr by the end of today.

I got my first job making $27k lived in a studio and paid $700/month in rent. She eventually got her masters and made $40K. I told her I wasn't about to make less than her and pay all the bills while she saved all her money. She ended up living with her sister and we broke up anyways.
A few years later I started making 40k and came across an old coworker of mine making $100k and I told her we going 50/50 if she want to be with me and she agreed. We ended up getting married (now we bring home $160k together).
I say that to say this... let your girl know your expectations and if she mad she can get to steppin. A 6 figure woman will enter your life soon after and gladly split everything. Hold your head up King!

Yeah, when I was living with a girlfriend, she had a portion she had to pay in each month. If she couldn't hang with the agreement, she needed to leave. It was a great deal, actually.
For $600, she was living in a 3br house, with utilities, a car with insurance and maintenance, food, and a cellphone that was unlimited everything, cable, internet, etc. When things went south and she had to move out on her own, there was a lot of regret. 🤣

The lesson learned here is that you need to think about all of your options when making a decision. Don't just think about living in a van if your rent is too expensive. If your rent is too expensive, find a cheaper place to live, find a roommate who will contribute towards the rent, or get a higher paying job. Explore all the possibilities. Don't think about one option only. Living in a van is not the only thing that you can do if your rent is too expensive. If there is a problem, there can be more than one solution to that problem.

If a person owns a van it is the best way to cut your living expenses 95%. Can still explore possibilities while accumulating all the money you are saving.
If a cheaper place means roommates or living in a bad area of town I rather move into my van and park where it’s safe and go stealth which is what I have done years ago.
This is one of the reasons why I was easily able to avoid debt early in life and keep it that way.

I was in this guys shoes when I was in my mid 20's. My goal was to convert a mini ford escort like Gabby Petito and travel while blogging and selling my art. This was my dream for years! And then something changed, I think I just got older, because I started to want something else. My favorite blog for van life has been going strong for over a decade, it's called Tiny House, Tiny Footprint. They share stories of people doing this. Idk I started to think that van life would be harder than owning a house - there would be constant repairs, every week figuring out where to park/sleep, and if you don't have a shower in your vehicle, using public showers. I still plan to convert something like a small school bus, but to take it out on long weekends/ vacations.
