He said in an interview, he was influenced by blues guitarist, Albert King. Country music is influenced by the blues. Growing up in Memphis, the blues and country was a normal thing to hear.

I don't know if you realize it but Chris Stapleton had 31 hit songs he had written for artists such as JT, Cia, Brittany Spears... Etc, Etc.
BEFORE he made his first album! He's been making hits for 15-20 years prior to his career starting! That's talent unrecognized that is just now being witnessed by the masses!
Lot of great country singers, but I can't think of any that have as much soul in their voice as Chris Stapleton.

And believe me, the live performance is the real deal with him doing that guitar solo.
You should listen to some of his blue grass tracks when he was with the band steel drivers before he began his solo tour. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform live at a festival in Virginia before he became famous. The man can sing anything and is a true national treasure. Nice reaction!
No genre,no label is sufficient for the amount of talent Chris Stapleton has. I'm a metalhead and absolutely in awe everytime I hear him sing.
You should listen to Chris's cover of the James Brown classic, "It's a Man's Man's World." It's a live performance when they just invited him on stage. Impromptu. Peace out.

Saw CS live in Virginia Beach a few months back. He did a 20 song set with a 2-song encore. Glad I got to see him. He had his wife by his side, stage front, busting out those angelic background vocals of hers as well. Great show. Chris brings a freight train of emotion direct to your soul.....every time! Chris usually wrote songs. But his wife Morgan talked him into singing. I always said there's a choice of Country and then there's a seperate category for Chris. I never was into country until I heard him. NYC girls don't usually do Country. But I love ❤ this guy.

Chris Stapleton is a beast !!! I've played 3 different instruments and sang for most of my life and all i know is music is supposed to take you to a different place and stur emotions and be an escape from life and Chris does all of those things like no other. Great reaction once again y'all.

It’s ok to say Chris is special .. his country music friends say the same thing !! He wrote songs for his peers and Adele and others for 15 years .. he has bad stage fright and his wife told him he needed to be the front man and do it w that TN whiskey album. He said he would if she would sing in stage w him !! She did and he blew up overnight at the CMAs when him and Justin performed .. he won new artist of the year album of the year and male vocalist of the year that night ! Rarely does that happen w a new artist !! Carrie Underwood did it .. that’s the last tome I can remember

Stapleton's sound, especially in this song, reminds me of early to mid 60s Ray Charles. Ray sort of moved away from the more rock n roll fell, to more of a blues based, soulful Motown sound...without losing his southern feel. Kept the blues and soul...but added strings, much like other artists of the era were doing...Sinatra, sort of getting away from the big band jazz music, evolving to mostly string orchestra. Same with Dean Martin... like his 1961 re-recorded version of "Return To Me,"...or, Go back and listen to his rendition of "Georgia On My Mind,"...with the strings and backing vocals, it's almost like easy listening, but with soul.
This song, "Cold" reminds me of that era...but digging deep into Stapleton's bluesy soul.
