As you said... perfect for architects! You need power, but no gaming power. You need to sketch, but no big art work. And you definetly need the flexibility.
Hi, Owner of Surface Studio. Heres my usecase: Im a pre-med student. I have a proper gaming desktop at home that i can play my complex and intensive games on. I only need it to be able to do school stuff and maybe play the occasional TFT or something really low-spec. However, i draw as a hobby and in my classes like organic chemistry, having diagrams in your notes is the difference between a A and a B. The utility of being able to just flip something and draw a chem-chain is SO useful. This is a GREAT 2nd computer. This is not the best primary computer. If im being honest, i dont think any laptop makes a good 'only' computer. They are just clunkier than desktops are. They have a formfactor they need either for logistical or structural reasons. That form factor has nothing to do with how easy it is to use, thats more of an obstacle that needs to be overcome by the engineering team.
As an architect student this is the perfect laptop, I wish this laptop existed when I was a Freshman 5 years ago. I’m aiming for my masters now and I just bought it 😅 I paid $2,800+ for mine I need the speed and space
This is a great device and quite a one of its kind. Not everything has to be about raw CPU performance (especially multicore). This is the kind of product that if you need it, you know immediately
I will say this…. I am an apple ecosystem user through and through. I took a chance and traded in my MacBook Pro for this, because I was ready for something different… and I absolutely love it. Through it obviously isn’t perfect, but I’m totally satisfied. I do everything work related on it… and managing projects, taking notes, and watching content on downtime is seamless. My only ick about it is that there isn’t enough stylish protective shell cases for this device due to its numerous form factors. I’m really pumped for the next one to come out.
Great review Matt. I'm holding off on surface products this year, but I REALLY hope that next year will be worth it from a perf standpoint. Alder Laker mobile will add E-cores, boosting multithreaded workloads where this 4 core processor really struggles. Intel's new stuff should be very exciting.

@Matthew Moniz. The Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio is Repairable, and the Hard-drive is upgradeable. I am not sure if anything else can be changed out internally. You do have two USB-C ports to add external devices. They seem to not want to really compete with their O.E.M. partners. Great video.
I chose this over MacBook Pro for my use case. Casual work and light programming (no ML) and some games. Its pretty perfect (and I don't even use the touch capability). It just looks and feels premium and the speakers are loud (bad bass though) and honestly the keyboard and touchpad are best in category.
Thanks for the review of this laptop since it's the same SKU I'm strongly considering for my daughter, who plans on majoring in art/graphic design and needs a portable solution for college and for light gaming.
@@zali9657 I also have to consider what she wants. I can't even get a decent Google result for "asus studio art" since all the results I see is an Asus mobile workstation at a price point much higher than a the Surface Studio, which is overkill for a student.

I'm own the older Surface Book and if She likes to draw She would love it. I used to have a tablet and an a MacBook and having one device for drawing, working and gaming is great but with problems. Battery live sucks because the dedicated GPU will always draw a bunch of power so you always need to have tge charger. And the drawing experience is different between Microsoft pen, Apple pen and the Wacom devices. I would check if she is already accustomed to any of those and the programs of course. I hated to use one program in the ipad and then photoshop in the Mac with the Wacom tablet.
I am a master's student in mechanical engineering and I need ansys and SOLIDWORKS software. Does this device work for me? If not, what should I buy? Thanks
You can unscrew and open this to replace the SSD with an off the shelf m.2. "slow" is relative for an SSD.... I'd like to know if the "slow" ssd is slow in a way that is perceptible to the user.
That heat venting thing out the side was something I found very annoying with the Asus G14 as I always used a gaming mouse for gaming and that was constantly getting hit by a blast of heat on the side of my hand. However, I didn't buy the version of this with the GPU as I only wanted it for the more tablet-friendly experience and to see how it worked for drawing and light photo touching, so I'm hoping that is not an issue for me.
Not really sure what machine can compete with the surface studio laptop. they may have more power but lose in function. for example xps is more powerful, but lacks active stylus support and the 2 in 1 factor. surface pro 8 has no discrete video card. zenbook duo, is not as portable with terrible battery life. What would recommend to someone as a competitor to this device?

I cant wait to see more laptops for all around visual artists but some possible deal breakers are: I really disslike the gray and black look that typically comes with Macs and prefer white and black or black and white, it's just cleaner looking. I hate the way the magnesium/aluminum exterior feels or the texture and Magnesium is a really soft metal and is likely why it gets those micro scratches. I also hate the really hard sharp edges of Mac like laptops, they hurt my hands. I also really want something like the M1 chip in there but Microsoft. Also, why an old school headphone jack? Might as well go with USB-C as well if there's no old school USBs.
CPU aside, the GPU is similar in performance to M1 Pro (even beating M1 Pro in some cases). Sure, it would be nice to have faster (and especially more efficient) CPU, but what do people really use ultra fast CPUs so much for anyways? To me, GPU performance is far more important; gaming and rendering use lots of GPU power, CPU not so much. Having the versantility and ability to draw on my laptop is something I need more than CPU speed, because it makes absolutely no difference in my day-to-day tasks.
@@eduardofreitas8336 Well it's nice to save and apply effects a bit faster, but I have my own photography business and currently edit with 2016 MB Pro with i5. 🤔 It gets the job done for me, so I don't think SLS would be slow by any means. I would agree that the cpu should have at least 6 cours however, I often see that people are comparing this device to larger 15 inch laptops such as the xps 15 or laptops with different target groups such as the Macbook Pro 16. Obviously it's going to lose against a bigger laptop that has enough space for a better cpu and gpu. If you want performance definitely go for the Macbook Pro. Its only weakness is the lack of touchscreen and pen support which makes it an easy decision for me. If you are going to use all the SLS' features such as the 3 modes, touchscreen + pen usage and light gaming or video editing or rendering or drawing then I don't really see any competition. Tell me if you know about a device that can exceed the SLS in those categories tho :D

Microsoft is really killing it in terms of innovation, such a shame they are always “nearly there” but “not quite there”, if that makes sense. I'm not sure how I feel about you basically shutting down both Intel and AMD for "power hungry" cpu's. Microsoft often claims they work with the OEM to get the most of the part without "compromising". M1 is ARM. You cannot equally compare ARM x64 which sips power, but relies heavily on good software to see the maximum potential. As you said... perfect for architects! You need power, but no gaming power. You need to sketch, but no big art work. And you definetly need the flexibility.
If Micosoft had used a Zen 3 AMD CPU, it would have more cores, be significantly faster, and run cooler.
Great review - this was really helpful. I think you covered the pros and cons really well and I am now leaning towards this device as my next laptop.
This would be the perfect school/work machine
Can't wait for a "Moniz Game Reviews" channel 🙌🏼
Hi, Owner of Surface Studio. Heres my usecase:
Im a pre-med student.
I wish they would’ve made it a little beefier, I just want it for 3D modeling
Just got one of these for work, I appreciate the in depth review! Thanks.
Hey how’s your performing after a year?
The SSD isn't soldered, but yeah, Microsoft doesn't want it to be upgradeable, it's more for repairability.

@@imtiazahmed2037 Yes, it has a 2230 size, but it's not meant for the end user to get to, more for businesses to remove for data security or backup.

Help! Advice needed
Which 2 in 1 to choose? For me the most important is power, the one with the best performance, desktop replacement for gaming and heavy duty tasks. Choosing between these:
1) lenovo yoga c940 15
intel core i9-9880H 8 core, gtx 1650 max q
2) surface laptop studio
intel core i7-1137H 4 core,rtx 3050 ti
Or maybe any other 2 in 1 which is even more powerful?
very simple, gpu for gaming, battery for both gaming & heavy work as it takes long time no matter what, so, just check the time can use in both then take the average of them, here, that will be the answer for it, if all in a hurry, fast in game, fast out finish work load, then, faster one in higher marks or shorter in time using will be the one, DO NOT REPLY, never check same message/comment again.
Great review, can't imagine buying this laptop unless you absolutely need a dedicated GPU.
So is it good for 2d animation? That's the main reason I need a laptop like this.
I chose this over MacBook Pro for my use case. Casual work and light programming (no ML) and some games. Its pretty perfect (and I don't even use the touch capability). It just looks and feels premium and the speakers are loud (bad bass though) and honestly the keyboard and touchpad are best in category.
but this is crappy windows.
Thanks for the review of this laptop since it's the same SKU I'm strongly considering for my daughter, who plans on majoring in art/graphic design and needs a portable solution for college and for light gaming.
DONT. ITS TRASH. buy an Asus studio art. It’s better
@@zali9657 I also have to consider what she wants. I can't even get a decent Google result for "asus studio art" since all the results I see is an Asus mobile workstation at a price point much higher than a the Surface Studio, which is overkill for a student.
@@LordTeshima I see. The new Asus studio pro art. It’s really good. I’m not sure if there are in stock cuz most of Asus high end laptops sell out really fast.
The pro art is way betttrr than the surface
Strongly recommend you watch MrMobile's review of this laptop. His numbers like battery life, screen brightness, etc are more accurate than other reviews, and he narrates how it feels to actually own and use the device over a long period.
I hated to use one program in the ipad and then photoshop in the Mac with the Wacom tablet.
do you recommend it for the whole adobe cloud?
I am a master's student in mechanical engineering and I need ansys and SOLIDWORKS software. Does this device work for me? If not, what should I buy? Thanks
You can unscrew and open this to replace the SSD with an off the shelf m.2.
"slow" is relative for an SSD.... I'd like to know if the "slow" ssd is slow in a way that is perceptible to the user.
Does MS SLS has m.2 nvme ssd?
how about the surface studio vs the xps 15. I kinda like the glass on top style of screen and not the screen and plastic bezel design.
What do you recommend for video editing? Surface Studio or Dell XPS 15?
xps 15
You're wrong you can change the ssd taking the bottom off after removing the rubber strips
I am studying architecture. Do you think this computer it’s going to give me a good performance when running 3D model and renderings programs? I am not sure if I should buy a gaming laptop instead.
what are other alternatives to this laptop that also lets you draw with a stylus/pen on tablet mode?
I have the same question!
What model could be the same (tactile PC/ tablett) but with really strong power for 3D architecture and Illustrator?
@@mcara2770 it's been 1 month since I bought it, I still haven't decided if I'll return it, something is definitely glitchy. But people tell me it's adobes fault for not optimizing their software for touch.
I cant wait to see more laptops for all around visual artists but some possible deal breakers are: I really disslike the gray and black look that
typically comes with Macs and prefer white and black or black and white, it's just cleaner looking.
For photo editing is a big deal :( Also 3d animation and much that I dont know.
@@eduardofreitas8336 Well it's nice to save and apply effects a bit faster, but I have my own photography business and currently edit with 2016 MB Pro with i5. 🤔 It gets the job done for me, so I don't think SLS would be slow by any means. I value touch + pen far more than CPU speed, but I do get your point.
I love the look of this, but it's too expensive. For anyone looking for a surface product, the SL4 is pretty heavily discounted rn and you can get some great deals. I just picked up the 15" SL4 with the AMD chip for around £1,000 and it's a fantastic device for the money. Love the review either way :)

Hey matt when is the roasting your setups series coming back? That was one of the most legendary playlists of all time on youtube. I submitted my laptop for roasting😅 I hope you take a look at it
I would agree that the cpu should have at least 6 cours however, I often see that people are comparing this device to larger 15 inch laptops such as the xps 15 or laptops with different target groups such as the Macbook Pro 16.
Yes, the asus rog flow z13 and x13, x16. :)

Tx for the review, but what about the speakers quality? Like Mac pro or like xps?
sooo what were the other options that perform better that have similar features? there was a mention of a dell laptop? I'm struggling here because I want something high performing but also the drawing aspect here is a major want for me. I can't do apple because the softwares I use aren't compatible and tbh im not a fan of apple UI, i get heated every time i touch my mom's macbook. i need windows, but i also want the drawing, a strong GPU for architectural sofware like enscape/revit/rhino, and I want it to last. my current laptop is a thinkpad E450 that is 7 years old and it has served me well, ran enscape & revit so smooth up until a recent meltdown that has left me unable to open enscape.. I want my next laptop to feel like an upgrade, and if it doesnt run enscape as smoothly as my current one did, I'll feel like i wasted my money.

Can we see a compariosn between this and the baseline MacBook pro 14?
I7 11800H and i7 11370H use the same power, this should not be a power issue. The 11800H costs marginally more so it really should've been used. I do wish the 3060 max q was used instead of the 3050ti as well, the cooling solution should be more than enough to handle it.
that's not true. The 11800H is a 45W cpu while the 11370H is only using 35W.

When these reviewers say: ''i have got 12 hours of battery life'' they mean 7 hours. I do not have a tech channel but i have used a good 100 laptops, most of them i had for my own laptop for months, 99,999999% of the time i didn't play, or edit on them, 99,9% of the time i used them on battery saver mode (even the macbooks) but whatever the big companies say about battery life, literally cut it in half, and whatever the reviewers say take like 40-50% off of that guys.

No one buys computers for their chipset which is why people and businesses keep their computing devices for 5 to 7 years. This is why MB's laptop market share is still at only 7-8% over a year after the introduction of the M1 chip. Also, where is Apple's M1 laptop or computer-tablet with a touchscreen and pen support?
Finally, no one who knows anything about tech would ever say the SP8 or SLS are underpowered. Please name a more powerful computer-tablet or laptop with a multi-posture touchscreen and pen support. I'm waiting....
The problem for Apple with business market is not longevity of Windows laptops but software - plain and simple. So many companies have to have fully functional Office suite, but MacOS, iPadOs are glorified Office files viewers pretty much. There is no point investing into Apple ecosystem when you receive complex .xlsx files and can't use them despite having the best hardware possible.
Sure there is no 2in1 in Apple catalogue but having it will not make Apple jump to 25% business market share

Microsoft is really killing it in terms of innovation, such a shame they are always “nearly there” but “not quite there”, if that makes sense.
I wish Apple would dare more and make such innovative machines, even if just for niece audiences. I would pay top dollars for a MacBook with a pen and touch display that can become a killer graphic tablet when needed ( I know there’s iPad+MacBook for that and that’s what I use for work but man would it be awesome to have them merged in one portable machine)
Ya I love that Microsoft is being creative this is truly a beautiful product. I’d rock this if it just had faster internals but they’re kind of screwed as there’s nothing as efficient in their pipeline
@@MatthewMoniz yeah, “small” issues that make those machines quite unattractive despite all the pluses. Similar to what happened with the desktop Surface Studio, great machine but not upgradeable so another big miss for a workstation/desktop pro machine with that price tag. Or the Surface Pro X, otherwise great but the slow arm processor and bad OS made it a no-go for nearly everyone.
Microsoft is killing it and there is no "quite there". There is a reason, AMD is not in many laptops and Apple can't even make a computer-tablet or touchscreen laptop with pen support and basic 21st century features like 1080p webcam, 2-in-1 design, 180 degree screen, etc. Apple who is not even close to being there....

Microsoft surface devices are beautiful...but they should optimize prices and I think one factor to help in prices optimization with be increase in volume and that can be achieved with better marketing. With 12th Gen Intel and upcoming AMD processor performance will be improved.

Apple has the capacity to design their own stuff because that is apart of their business model. Microsoft is primarily is software compant first, Cloud 2nd, Hardware 3rd.
