There are so many fun bands that get overlooked , Like OK go . they did some amazing musical acrobatic stuff. pentatonix great covers .
And a lot of amateur artist and bands that cover songs in unique ways , Lindsey Stirling & Peter Hollens for example . tons of game sound tracks . or the danish and swedish national orchestras perfoming movie and game sound tracks in an epic way .

I'm 64 and have been listening, watching and following Band Maid for 3 years and have been to 2of their concerts. I enjoy their music because it is good music, as a musician I can learn a thing or two from them whether it be writing or playing. They are great performers and each are wonderful people. I have never been intrigued by a band nor have I ever had a favorite band before. I think I can consider myself past midlife so I don't see it as any crisis. These ladies continue to amaze me with their talents. Their Rock is forever. You could say they have dominated me with their
music. If this band were all male or even mixed no one would accuse you of having a crisis. Its about the music.

I'm a 50 something male who joined the fan club just to have the opportunity to buy tickets to see the band live. Flew up to Seattle a couple weeks ago and was not disappointed.
It's this Domination video that was the catalyst for me going down the Band-Maid rabbit hole a couple years ago. Good hard rock just puts a smile on my face and if its going to be a bunch of cute Japanese women to save Rock-n-roll, than so be it.

I'm 68 and honestly stopped caring about Rock by the mid 70s because all the excitement and creativity had gone and been replaced by cynicism, pretension, and formulaic song writing. Band Maid are exciting and creative, treat genre as a serving suggestion (no pun intended), and put in twice the work that anyone would actually ask of them, all with a level of musicianship that is all we could ask but still not enough for them.
Yes I'm old, but that is because I've had to wait a long time for bands this good to come back, and I'm not gonna miss out because of the prejudice of a few close-minded people.

  • @surfingasongwave
    @surfingasongwave ปีที่แล้ว +5

I'm too old to rock and roll and too young to die. But I did drive six hours to see them in Dallas, stood in line for an hour, for anther two hours waiting for the show, watched their serving for two hours, and by the end my dogs were barking! But let me point this out, and I cannot emphasize this enough. You are not watching a live performance. You are watching a *recording* of a live performance. When the first note slaps you in the face, that bass drum thumps you in the chest, MISA's bass vibrates the buttons on your shirt - that is an experience you cannot get on headphones or speakers no matter the quality. This goes for any rock band, but especially for this one. They are great performers and they have great camaraderie. They are a great band.

Alan, I will be 62 in a couple of months and, as I have said often, I am extremely grateful that my teen years were spent during the best decade for rock music. I am also extremely grateful that this video of Domination popped up in my recommended list in April, 2020. I decided to watch it and was amazed, not because it was an all female band but because this type of rock was being played in Japan. It took me back to the great concerts I saw in the 70s and 80s. I was certainly curious by the costumes but a little research into the band's history provided the answer and I have never really thought about it since. It is just the Band-Maid look. I kept reading about their history and watched all their videos. I discovered how much they had grown as a band. When I saw the video for onset a few months later, it cemented their place in my top 20 rock bands of the last 50 years. Because of Band-Maid I discovered Lovebites (in my top 20 metal bands of the last 50 years), Unlucky Morpheus, Nemophila, Asterism, Wagakki Band, Gacharic Spin/Doll$Boxx, Hanabie, Crystal Lake, Coldrain. Those are just the ones off the top of my head - there are others. Enjoying these Japanese bands comes down to just loving great music. Simple as that.
I will say that Band-Maid has a special place in my heart, along with The Warning, because they are trying to bring back good old fashioned hard rock. There are plenty of great metal bands right now and some great blues rock bands, but great hard rock bands are scarce. By the way, you need to find the video of The Warning meeting Band-Maid in the interview tent at Aftershock. Their reactions are priceless. Easy to tell they were already fans of each other.
Lastly, I took my wife, daughter and granddaughter to see Band-Maid in Dallas on 10/21. There are now three generations of my family that love Band-Maid. Go see them when you get the chance.

They consistently put out hard rock music that is fun to listen to and experience live.
    What more could you want?
I'm a very recent convert and if this is a mid-life crisis then I welcome it. They should all be this fun.
Get over yourselves, gentlemen. The future of rock and roll is in the hands of some very talented Japanese ladies. It couldn't be in better hands.
I have not been this excited for music in decades.

I've seen AC/DC, Rush, Aerosmith, Ozzy, Yes, Roth, Hagar, Kiss, just about every Rock band in the seventies and eighties. I pretty much quit music during the nineties. I still go see shows with my wife, but the magic was gone. Sucked into compartmentalized, commercialized money-making genres.

Band-Maid has lots of older fans. Including 78 year Tony Visconti the producer for David Bowie, T-Rec and others. He produced their song "The Dragon Cries". He's been to their shows in NYC including last night's, he brought his unique 50-year old 12-string metal front Zemaitis to the show to show to Miku. She showed it to the audience but she was afraid to play it, too valuable. She handed it to Kanami who did some nice shredding on it.

Saw them last night in NJ and was happy to see a good number of white chinned blokes (like me) and mature women in Band-Maid gear. Some toting the grand kids with them. Totally enjoying the revival. The way the Maids engage with the audience and have the fans become enamored is intentional. Miku works her "magic" and everyone has a good time. Their live show is brilliant... Don't know if it was a Halloween Eve, Rocky Horror Picture Show thing or what, but I saw nearly a dozen people dressed in full maid costumes. Pretty cool . Talking to one was like talking to Tim Curry. Fun stuff.

Give me a mid-life crisis and Band maid all day, over the often depressing or violent music that is produced, regurgitated and sent to the masses every day. Not only are these 5 women talented, but they are inspiring, strong and considerate. To them, it's all about the music and what incredible music they have released in the last 9 years. The determination and dedication they show should be a lesson to all no matter how old you are. Let's be real for a minute, how many times do we judge music released by male artists by their looks. If that were the case, then a lot of music over the centuries would have been ignored before a first listen. Music's first sensory attraction is sound, and that is the only trait that should be considered and if their music was trash, then people wouldn't listen to them. There is a reason they have been getting a cult following. THEY ARE FUCKING BRILLIANT.

The age range goes from 14 to 70, there is no age limit to listening to music. My annoyence is when people of my age say there are no good bands around these days. to which I answer : you mean you haven't looked. I first discovered Japanese music in 2018 when Superorganisms brought a Japanese all girl funk/pop act called Chai as their support. I fell in love with them instantly. Don't quote the Beatles at me, Im not keen on most pop music although I do appreciate good song writing by anybody. Grand Funk Railroad 1971 sold out the Shea Stadium the Beatles didn't. I'm still with you mate- great reactions. A well known tip- never try to impress your favourite music on your friends. Usually they just won't get it.

Love who you love man. I'm another old bloke in my mid 60's that has been so disappointed in the staid offerings of the commercial music scene over the last couple of decades. These women & other bands like them have rekindled my love of 'new' music again.
I sometimes wonder if they understand why a large part of their audience are people of our age.

I'm an older person as well and like you I'd all but given up of rock as well. There was very little that sounded new until I stumbled across this band. So I hear where you're coming from.
TBH, I was skeptical the first time I saw them listed in a TH-cam suggestion, so I'd dismissed Band-Maid the first time they appeared. But a few months later I gave them an honest listen and my jaw dropped listening to either Puzzle or Secret My Lips. I can't recall which song exactly because I immediately searched and soaked up as much of their music as I could. This was the sound I'd been missing all these years.
Don't stop your reactions. This is a band that deserves to heard and like any other rock band, they've paid their dues. Their being female, to me, is simply something that breaks down doors, and more power to them. But it's their music that grabbed me. If you're simply here to celebrate music then by all means celebrate it and share it.

I am much older than you. I have always loved music. From Black Sabbath to Olivia Newton John to The Eagles. In other words great cross sections of music. Then my love died. I found the music of the last decade mostly uninspired and dull. Then by chance I fell across bands from Japan. They had that old sound of quality rock. I loved it. Band Maid are across between The Monkees and Black Sabbath. They are the first band in decades I know the names of the members of the Band. Over nine nearly ten years they have been together and always improving. Quality has no age limit. I am too old to care what they look like. I am 70 years old and I found Band-Maid back in 2014. As a musician myself, I listen to music that will make me feel something. Kanami Tono the lead guitarist writes and composes some of the best music today. I listen to what I want and I don't care about what other people think. When I listen to new music I dissect the music and listen to everything in a song. Band-Maid makes me jealous of how complete of a band they are. So in my opinion listen to what you want and like. I listen to everything in music, jazz, classical, rock, blues and alternative and music from around the world. Jethro Tull had a line in one of his songs "No, you're never too old to rock and roll If you're too young to die" keep Rocking Dude 🤘🤘

Enter Band-Maid: actual serious musicians dedicated to their craft and not side-tracked by lifestyle issues. I don’t care where they are from, their culture, gender blah blah - they put out an amazing product. As for your friend, I can understand the mindset: narrow sense of identity, many people are afflicted by it. Stick with what you like. I had the same type of experience not long ago. I had a desktop background on my surface, an outline of Kanami playing her guitar with the saying "Shut up, Kanami is talking". One of the guys at my work saw it and asked what was that? I told him it's the lead guitar player of a Japanese rock group I've been listening to lately. Told him the band name was Band Maid. He immediately went online to check this group he had not heard about, and I thought "there's going to be another fan for Band Maid". He stopped the song after about 10 seconds and said he knows exactly why I listed to this band, "because it's a group consisting of young, cute Japanese girl's". I was so disappointed in his instant assessment that I wouldn't even dignify that with a response. I just had to cut him some slack and move on. Because you see he's a younger pop, hip hop fan... so I realized that looks are the #1 popularity factor for people currently listening to those genres of music.

I can't and don't need to tell you what you should do. However, what I can say is that your smile during these videos and while you listen to the music of B-M, Nemo or Asterism, shows me that you already know exactly what you have to and would like to do. :)
Leave the others in their seemingly so perfect world. We can only hope that someday lightning will strike them and their ignorance and narrow-mindedness will be eliminated. I could write volumes of books about the looks and comments I get almost daily when someone notices what music I listen to. It is so damn rare that someone shows an open mind and is really interested in it. As open and connected as society may present itself to the outside these days, and perhaps even believes it is, it is unfortunately still far from it. 😒

I went to a Band-Maid concert in San Francisco recently and the crowd was all ages and less male dominated than you’d assume. My wife enjoyed them a lot and was particularly impressed with Saiki this time. My wife is “our” age.l and knows what constitutes good music…
I used to think this whole notion of “projection” was just reverse psychology psychobabble of some kind but I really do think when people make comments like that they’re really showing you how THEY think and feel. They can’t like Band-Maid because they associate Asian women and maid costumes with sexual deviance of some kind. lol Weirdoes. Does that also make them deaf? It would appear so.

    • @stevehall5128
      @stevehall5128 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Bingo on the projection. Or at least being insecure about what they like.
What's really gross is when people who like the band start blatantly white-knighting and saying only _they_ actually appreciate and respect the band... and then proceed to condescendingly prescribe what the band (who have already accomplished far more than any of these "experts") should change to be successful.
Pretty sure all the young women in Maid outfits around me at the past 4 shows would be surprised to hear that B-M's battle gear is just supposed to appeal to dirty old men.

You have to listen to yourself as far as music taste goes. Nothing wrong with friends giving their opinion, but in the end that doesn't really matter.
Who cares where a band is from, how they look or what other people think about them as long as you enjoy the music they are playing.
I am 38 years old and have been listening mainly to metal (usually the more aggressive/fast kind like black, thrash and some death metal) as far as guitar based music goes for the last 20 years. None of my friends are really into most of the music I have listened to for the last 20 years and if people would have told me I would start listening to Japanese girls dressed as maids playing rock music I would have laughed at their faces 2 years ago.
I honestly even deliberately ignored reactions to a lot of the more reacted to Japanese bands when I was first starting to watch reaction channels writing them off before giving them a chance. I have always been relatively open-minded as far as music goes, but for some reason I couldn't get over the fact that it all looked like a gimmick to me at first glance even though plenty of the black metal bands I listen also dress up in ridiculous outfits and wear make-up (realising that actually made me give them a chance).
I am so glad I eventually gave them a chance as it opened up so much new music to me and I have always loved discovering new genres and niche's. And that is what Band-Maid ultimately gave me by giving them an honest chance. There are still things about most music in this scene that I am not 100% a fan of (mainly the more poppy/overly sweet melodic sounding choruses), but I have always appreciated how extremely talented most of the members in those bands are and that is ultimately what I came to love about most of the bands I have listened to. I can personally do without the gimmicks most of the bands have, but it's ultimately all about the music. There are so many bands with gimmicks all over the world, why would that stop me from listening to these amazing musicians? There are certainly bands that haven't been clicking with me, but one thing I can not take away from any of them is that the majority of the members involved show a mix of dedication, musicianship and drive that I haven't seen in a lot of different music I have been listening to and it makes me have nothing but respect of what they do.
It's difficult for me to say if I will be listening to these bands in 5 to 10 years time as I have been switching around a lot of different genres over the years, but I do know that I am still enjoying finding and listening to Japanese bands ever since I started having a look at Band-Maid about a year and a half ago and I am not planning on stopping any time soon. Just listen to your own heart.

I totally agree with you on the "Crap Music Crisis" point.
I'm in my 60's and I am tired of the autotuned pop music and overproduced generic rock music. There are good bands out there, but the industry promotes such crap that a music lover will despair. No one promotes the talented bands. Just like you, I discovered Japanese rock music a little over a year ago and have been blown away by bands like X Japan, Band-Maid, Maximum-The-Hormone, Ningen Isu, Hanabie, and Nemophila.
5 girls in maid outfits. The moment you say it aloud to your friends they immediately have the wrong idea. They just don't grasp how incredibly talented these women are, and the intricacy, depth, expanse, and beauty of their compositions. You have to experience their music to appreciate it. Band-Maid isn't about 5 pretty girls dressed in cute maid costumes; Band-Maid is about 5 deeply talented musicians producing amazing music.

Is it that these Japanese women dressed as maids write better songs than the people they are listening to? They absolutely do. It could be that your friends, like all bullies are simply afraid of what they don’t understand.

Until I found Band-Maid, I thought the only music that came out of Japan was bubble-gum pop sung by girls who sound like 12 year olds on helium. I can well understand somebody who hasn't heard these bands play would assume the same, and that would be kind of odd to be getting into.
Others assume it's about being attracted to young Japanese women, but if that was the case then fans wouldn't be just as picky about their favourite Japanese bands as they are about western bands - yet you ask Band-Maid fans what other bands they like from the region, and that list will rapidly become as long as your arm.

Us old farts know and LOVE Rock Music. Band-Maid is the best at creating this. The crap music overall, crap rap, crap pop, crap country is why we older folk are attracted to Band-Maid and is their, IMHO, biggest fan base.....because we want ROCK!! It's in our blood, we were weened on it. I'm not a big metal fan but can listen to some but it just wears me down after a few songs........Band-Maid doesn't. I'll listen to these girls till they close the lid.

I think it’s not the fact that metal ( some ) can be too much , it’s that it went through too many cycles and came out bad in the wash .. I listen to say Baby Metal or Asterism I get 2 perspectives from one genre . Now that’s what’s coming out of Japan .. oh and I do love some of the Jazz coming from those islands .. but that’s not for here ( I don’t think 🤔) 😎👍

Will all due respect to your friends, but they seem just like jaded old folks resting on the remains of their past. It is not about you having a middle age crisis, it is about them loosing the taste of novelty and life in music.

Did your friend even listen to the music? Did he even click on the link? Or did your friend blindly pass judgement?
"I'm not having a mid-life crisis. I'm having a crap music crisis that's being produced today." That sums it up.
The reason there are so many guys 40-60 years old that love these Japanese bands is because they are playing the kind of music we grew up with.
According to the standards of your friends we should all discriminate against women because they are beautiful. We should only follow the big uglies even if their music is ter'ble. Is this the era of big uglies? By the way. I'm one of the li'l' uglies.
Personally, the music is more important. Nothing wrong with big uglies. Their music is good or acting is good then we'll watch. I loved watching Marie Dressler and Marjorie Main. Ethel Merman was one helluva singer. Sir Charles Laughton was a great actor and his recitation of the Gettysburg Address in Ruggles of Red Gap is one of my favorite all time scenes.
I think people are beauty and skinny shaming. People are naturally attracted to good looking people. It's the way our brain functions. Don't allow your friends to win with their ignorance. Keep up your reaction video, Alan.

@@alan-reacts65 Thank you Alan. One thing I didn't include was how insulting it is to these wonderful bands when people say their fans are only pervs. That insults them as musicians and artists.
