Like you, I started forest / woodland photography because of the pandemic. I have a forest right on my doorstep, literally a 5 minute walk away and I never appreciated it until lockdown. It has been great for my own personal mental health and I can honestly say it has been my most enjoyable photography journey. I have especially enjoyed it in the rain and recently just using a 50mm lens, which has produce some really great images.
Great video! I find your videos so informative and inspiring. You don’t talk about using the most expensive equipment, you talk about the ‘love’ of photography, just getting out the shooting photos.
You're incredibly watchable. Your vids are an inspiration. I sit here having just finished uploading my own woodland vlog and looking to start another vlog edit and have just realised how little actual stills material I have for it. But, you're one of those youtubers that made me get off my backside to to this in the first place.
I'm so glad I found your channel. My father has covid and is not doing well at all. He has Parkinson's and heart problems so the odds are stacked against him. Watching your calm, informative videos has brought me some comfort.
Thanks Fred, that means a lot that I can bring you some solace. I'd like to give you my eBook free of charge if you haven't purchased it already? It would be my pleasure. Please email me at: henry@henryturnerphotography.co.uk and I'll send it across. Cheers!
Top vlog by a top bloke. This is the virtual kick up the rear I need. I've lost my photography mojo lately and need to find it and get out! Thanks Henry. Keep up the good work.
Love the Canada toque! Greeting from the Wet Coast of Canada! Out here on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island we have almost identical weather conditions to you. Recently, on a torrentially down pouring day I popped out to one of the local Provincial Parks. It was, as you say " top drawer"! Thanks for the inspiration and the different perspective on the weather. Stay safe and I am loving seeing your corner of England. Oh, and yeah, love the photography too! 👌🏻
Dude, glad to see you out and about. Got to admit Ive followed a lot of photographers for along time but truly enjoy your energy and enthusiasm. Never stop and someday I'd live to come up and shoot with you. Someday
Love the photos and your channel Henry! How many times do we just walk past leaves on the ground and not notice the beauty? Slow down and enjoy your surroundings! Thanks again for the inspiration Henry!
Just wondering if anyone from the BBC have been in touch yet, they must be crying out for content at the moment, have you seen that bloke doing paintings every night about 7:30 on BBC2, Henry talking about photography would be a winner on that slot And that leaf shot, georgous. I know what direction my camera is going to be pointing at the weekend 👍
I loved the photos, I think it was a great success to put moved people in the photo makes it unique and very creative also the photo of the leaves has incredible colors, congratulations
Your advice on getting out is spot on and it inspires me to get out there and take some photos no matter what the weather. Today, I am waiting for my new Sony 55-200mm lens to arrive to give it a test drive in the local woodland. There is something I like about your first photo, peeping around the tree and the movement in the dog walker.
Hi Henry! Love this video..I'm my own worst enemy getting out the door..Today was no exception. It was dark, 27 degrees, snow on the ground. I procrastinated for an hour and finally went to a local woodland and it was awesome! It was "straight out of the top drawer" as you would say! Great video and images sir!
One of my favorite shots was taken on film (Velvia 50) in the mid-90s. It was shot off the back deck when I lived in Oregon on a rainy day. Using a Nikon 300/F4 on the tripod it was a close up of fall oak leaves hanging on evergreen boughs all covered in raindrops. Not much rainy, woodland photography here in Southwest Texas I'm afraid. I guess the next time it does (someday) rain I need to get out in it.
Thumbs up for some Canadiana with the Roots touque..Seems like the best pics come from those who get out when everyone stays in. The macro leaves is definitely the shot. Reminded me of a video from Adam Gibbs a few weeks ago.
Thanks for this Henry. I've always struggled with the "pile of leaves" look. I have always felt there are images to taken here but upon when I take them I am not completely happy with them. Fantastic how you explained your composure here. Something I am definitely going to take with me on my next local woodland walk (maybe tomorrow lunch time to get some practice). I get drawn into a single leaf against the grain of he wood look, either a bench or a stump when I'm out and about.
Being mainly a concert photographer, I haven't had much to do in 2020. In stead I turned more to landscapes and woodland, to keep busy and to keep my mental health in the current circumstances. Landscape and woodland photography are not my "field of expertise", but I have enjoyed it and I like to think that my landscape and woodland photography have improved over the past 8 months. :)
Love the hat. As a Scottish Canadian I loved seeing you wear that. The images though, well first not my cup of tea but the leaves were great. Very easy and effective shot to do. Totally agree with your message. Get out. Do it. Move your arse as my mum would say! You'll never know what you missed unless you stood in front of it. Love the video. Nice to see some rain. All our rain is solid and fluffy here in the rockies. But that happens easy at minus 12 on a warm day lol. Stay safe everyone. And you to Henry
very cool. we are about to go into lockdown up here in scotland but watching this and doing some local woodland photography would be a cool adventure. thanks for the videos and encouragement.
That has made my day, fantastic video. Encapsulates everything I have been thinking and trying to express to my darling wife, while out and about. Thanks so much an inspiration.
Hello from Canada. Love the hat. I just wanted to say that I enjoy your videos immensely. I have learned a great deal from them. Any plans to photograph here in the Great White North anytime soon?
Somehow I'm not very inspired to go out atm.. The fall colors are disappearing, the weather is horrible.. But I'm sure my inspiration will come back again, it always does.. I am hoping for some snow this winter, last winter we got no snow at all.. The second picture, with the leaves, turned out really good, really like it!
Thanks Henry, just came across your channel, I very rarely subscribe (currently only Nigel Danson and James Popsys) but very happy to add you to the list. Found your video really inspirational, looking forward for more to come and also looking through your back catalogue
Woodland is addictive, and I got into it with the pandemic too. It has re-established my link to the environment and how things have changed over the decades. Thank you for this vid.
love your enthusiasm in all your vids henry. The autumn colour seemed to go on for ever here in Devon, and I got some "top drawer" pics this year but I never thought of looking down!! New tripod mate??
Absolutely bang on mate with this one, I live in the Forest of Dean but until lockdown always flocked to the mountains or coast, now I'm loving woodland photography and your pretty much guaranteed to get a unique shoot, I just haven't perfected vlogging in the rain like you haha. keep them coming mate your enthusiasm is infectious and if you ever decide to head down this way give me a shout.
Your Forest of Dean comment attracted my attention. My Dubberley ancestors from the area from the 1600s have me interested in visiting the area when the Covid situation hopefully comes to and end. I would love to take a photo tour through the area. My wife and I were just in Wales this past September. Is the Forest of Dean noteworthy for a photo experience in your opinion?
@@garydubberly6608 Hi Gary, FOD is a great place but not always the easiest place for photography, there are some classic places like Symons Yat and around some of the lakes. I personally think its best in the autumn and winter, but spring can be nice as well, as there are a few bluebell hotspots. As far as woodland photography goes it's a big area but there are some gems if you search hard enough, I have done a few vlogs over on my channel recently in the FOD if you want to see what's about.
A figure in a shot like this can be quite effective. I always avoided it but it can be effective on a path like this . It needs to be in sharp focus or a definite blur. In this case it does seem to be a blur which gives it a certain ethereal feel. The blurred person at the end of the path I think is effective. I am not saying it is better but a definite alternative. Thanks Henry.
Another enjoyable trek to the woods. 👍 I think it's good that you experiment. Didn't really like the dog walker one, but sometimes these type of things work out great and you get a wee gem, so worth a try. Liked the leaves composition. Totally agree with you about getting out and about. It's probably more true in this country than anywhere else in the world, that understanding the weather (forecast) and knowing what locations/activities are going to be good in given weather conditions is key to making the best of what we have from day to day. I enjoy kayaking and hillwalking and cycling and as long as you take into consideration, precipitation, temperature and wind and then choose your location (mountain tops /loch / coast /valley / woods) and a suitable activity then there aren't too many days you can't be out and about. Of course I always have my camera with me. 🙂 I usually get some tips and ideas from your videos .... I always get a good dose of enthusiasm. Thanks again. 👍
Your getting better and better in every video mate. The way you choose your compositions is so different and look amazing! Top draw as usual.. also love the fact that you go out in all weather.. 👊🤙🤙
For some reason with people walking on paths through photos, they always seem to me to be better when the person is walking away rather than toward the camera.
Nice one Henry! Lovely shots and inspiring vlog. Here in WA State, we have incredible alpine forests, lakes and mountains. Problem though is hiking alone in the forests isn’t advised due to wildlife (mountain lions, bears and coyotes). Wish I could go out hiking with friends but I can’t. So I do road trips a lot currently and manage to photograph from the road sides.
Awesome video Henry as always mate! Have literally tried doing this exact same thing this autumn - bloody hard without a weather proof camera mind - felt like one of your earlier videos with the rain cover and just overall soaked 😂 as you’ve said quite rightly before though - there are good trips and bad trips and that’s just part of the experience 🙌 you won’t know if you don’t go 🤣
As a mainly woodland photographer myself I could tell your ‘experimental’ shot was not going to work out but I applaud your efforts. That’s how we learn what works and what doesn’t. The tree on the right was too dominant, nor would it make a very balanced image. By all means have a single person with a dog in your image. Particularly if that person is at an interesting point in your image like walking through a corridor of trees, spotlighted by light or shade or at a particular reference point to show scale.

Liked the composition of the 2nd image Henry and a good reminder to look down as there is compositions to be had. Didnt recognise the weather app, what one was it you used?
I find a lot of nice spots in my local woodlands but they're often littered with fallen trees or broken stumps etc. I dont take the photo becauae I don't think anyone would find that intereating to see. Should I though?
I would say absolutely you should take that photo. When I’m out in woodlands I’m looking for those sorts of things as a starting point for a composition. You can use them as foreground and then compose your image around that object.
I think I would have preferred a non blurred version of the lady dog walker. I was out in one of my local woods 2 days ago & just by coincidence had the same idea as you. Great minds think alike.
Hey Henry, hope you’re well. Love the creative idea behind the dog Walker photo. Before the image was displayed on screen, In my mind I was envisioning the blur to be longer. If you get chance again, maybe stick an ND filter on and get a longer exposure (not too long) of the dog Walker. It might be a good way to portray the movement of the person whilst everything else around is stood still....or it might turn out rubbish and look weird 🙃. Just thought I’d share how I imagined it in my head. I’d be curious to see how it would turn out if you did it 👍
It's funny. Since there are no grand vistas (other than the city itself) where I live, I often look outside and say "Too damn sunny. I'm staying in." Or, "Cloudy with a slight drizzle? Great! Off to the state park for woodland!" Unfortunately, we rarely get fog here either so I do what I can. I expect to do a lot of minimalist seascapes this winter.
Love the videos, thank you!!! But, bro, does the sun EVER shine over there? LOL. Every video is overcast or raining and its always soaking wet...lol But again, love the vids
Inspiring as always Henry. The experimental shot, I can see why your not mad on it, but it definitely has something. P.s. what's the weather app you use?
Nice toque, eh! 🇨🇦🤣 Seriously, though. I find it quite tough to get good woodland photos in November before the snow hits. It's just bleak with all of the leaves off of the trees.
Where you mentioned the first shot not being mad on it. My initial thoughts were ghostly and its could be a grower. You might get to like the picture later. Great video as always

Thanks! Haha it does, but I usually try to avoid it :D
Brilliant bro ❤️
Great video mate loved the tree errr leaf shot lol no great video mate wat tripod do use and price?
Cheers mate
Thanks a lot! This is the tripod that was in this video: geni.us/manfrottoelement
Excellent
Inspiring as always Henry.
The experimental shot, I can see why your not mad on it, but it definitely has something.
P.s. what's the weather app you use?
Thanks Chris!@ Weather app is called 'Windy'
What weather app is that? Looks rather detailed
Hi Marc it's called Windy, it's brilliant!!
Nice toque, eh! 🇨🇦🤣
Seriously, though. I find it quite tough to get good woodland photos in November before the snow hits. It's just bleak with all of the leaves off of the trees.
Where you mentioned the first shot not being mad on it. My initial thoughts were ghostly and its could be a grower. You might get to like the picture later. Great video as always
Ben Horne would appreciate that leaf shot 🙂
Alright I'm inspired now! Let's gooooo woodland photography!
Nice one
