I just test drove a 2024 Forester Wilderness trim the day before yesterday. It’s a very nice car. I hate the start stop feature regardless of what it is doing to the engine, it would annoy me to no end. If I bought the car I’d buy a “start stop eliminator” for the car so that I could turn it off and have it stay off. There’s a nice button to the left of the steering wheel and if you are okay with pushing that every time you drive the car then that works too. I predict that Subaru will get hybrid cars and the start stop will go away. I have a hybrid and you don’t notice the car starting, but in the Subaru the whole car shudders.
All I had to do was experience the hesitation of stepping on the gas as the car was turning off in an intersection to automatically switch it off as soon as I start up.
Toyota start/stop motors are guaranteed for 385,000 starts and then MUST be replaced (as in, they shut down and won’t restart)…but, that’s a lot of starts.
I would say the answer here is, “it depends” I don’t believe all engines are built to account for it long term. Especially when an engine is hot, the oil is less viscous, during a long stop a lot of that oil is draining down and on startup there isn’t as much present. To me the tiny amount of emissions being offset is not worth the thought of extra wear, let alone anything else.
On our 2020 Forester, 1 of the 1st things I bought for it was an Auto Stop Start button that Default keeps that function turned off. All the stopping & starting is annoying & causes wear to the engine & starter. No thanks.
Damn if I understood at the end if the stop/start function is good for the car or not! Just say it in a simple yes or no!

As a battery technician. For 6 years.
Start stop does kill batteries more often.
Ram E-torque 👌🏻 doesn't use the starter and I save a lot of gas at stop lights

The start stop isn't causing any extra damage.
I did not understand anything 😊

I'm not buying the "Auto-Stop-Start" feature!!!
