When I write, I aim to write like Jane Austen, but while I can copy her tones, her humor, I still make it my own. MJ did the same with the dancing. I've always loved the old school dancers: Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis, The Nicholas brothers, Bill Robinson, et al...AND old black & white movies of the 1940s and 50s but I have to say that Michael's Smooth Criminal is a tour de force to Astaire's 1953 "The Band Wagon". Just how much of it was an inspiration for Michael I don't know but watching the clips from both side by side is truly amazing. Michael clearly earned the rank of Master Of His Craft along side Fred Astaire and all the other great male dancers!

But, unlike many popular so-called "artists" today, Michael DIDN'T outright "copycat" off of those who inspired him (like today's "artists," and "Pop" stars have tried - who ARE trying as HARD as possible - to do with HIM). Instead, he took what he learned from his influences, and used that to establish an identity of his OWN. He wasn't trying to become the "new," or the "next," version of anyone who inspired him; He was always ORIGINAL, he was always HIMSELF. As he wrote, at one time, he wanted to "study the greats....and then become greater." This Video PROVES just how true that is.

Man I LOVE Fred's set. It's so colorful! And then i love the way Michael flipped it. Also I see a little influence on the video concept for 'Bad' in the Astaire movie.

He got inspired and took it to the next level, all the artist from painting to cinema do references to the artist that inspires them....it is how it works. Many pelple did the same with MJ later on.

But Fred Astaire was just one of MJ’s inspirations. MJ was all the masters in one, & he surpassed them all
Been a fan of Fred for decades. Just saw this MJ vid for the first time, a few days ago. Fred once said he believed MJ was the best dancer he'd ever encountered. Now I understand. I immediately saw the similarities in their style. Amazing. Miss them both. Wow. Great video of yours too. Thanks.

He got inspired and took it to the next level, all the artist from painting to cinema do references to the artist that inspires them....it is how it works. Many pelple did the same with MJ later on.

Michael Jackson and Fred Astaire are both wonderful dancers!! I really loved seeing Fred's Dance moves and seeing how mj incorporated it into his own dance moves :) MJ talked about how much Fred inspired him in his book "moonwalk".

People can say what they want and have their opinions and I'll keep my opinion to myself but one thing cannot be denied; MJ was an artist.

Beautiful! I enjoyed watching this. The similarities between the performers are remarkable when the dancing is placed side by side. Michael Jackson always acknowledged his indebtedness to the greats. He was always able to add something of his own, and the sheer speed at which he executed his moves was remarkable. He is not to be faulted for wanting to imitate the beauty and skill he so admired. Thank you for putting these together.
