Motorsports - Marshal Fails & Close Calls

  • Marshals, or Marshalls, have always been a a part of racing, and they will continue to be a mainstay for without them, racing would be pandemonium. They clear cars, wave flags to help drivers on track, act as first responders to incidents, and much more, almost always on a voluntary basis. Unfortunately, humans make mistakes, and so do track marshalls. Whether it's being aggrivated or the opposite, too-relaxed, not waving flags, falling, etc., it is normally caught on television. In this compilation you will also see close calls, which entail cars nearly hitting marshalls. Here is a solid 10 minutes of marshal fails and close calls. Enjoy!

      They should have had a "dead man's" valve at the other end of whatever that hose is connected to like IndyCar does. A spring loaded lever that has to be held open for the fuel to flow. If something like this happens the guy at the valve just lets go of the handle. Springs pull the handle up, and that closes the valve. NASCAR, and others stayed with the dump cans to limit the amount of fuel in the pits. If this were to happen with dump cans, you just tip them back up, end of fuel flow.

    Some of these clips, 1:50 in particular, remind me that sometimes the right way to handle being in the middle of an active racetrack isn't to dive for cover but rather to stand still and VISIBLE for the drivers (who are moving much faster) to go around you- rather than diving unpredictably in one way or another.

    • @Navajonkee
      @Navajonkee ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I saw a clip from Indycar maybe (?) where a very similar scenario ensued. Car was standing in the middle of the track, marshals are handling the situation when another car suddenly approached. The marshalls, instead of standing still right next to the broke down car (a very visible obstacle), tried to dive off the track. Well, one of them got his arm caught by the wheel of the passing car, and let me tell you: These wheels spin. Fast. Dude was basically sucked under the tire and spat out like some rag doll. I think he sustained some serious injuries. So yea, stay still, and if there's an obstacle on the track, stay next to it.

      Apologized to the driver the round for making them angry enough to run me over! 😀
      Still remember first pile up. Had to just stand there and wait for every to scatter and stop. Kid under kart and all its weight on his left ankle. He was freaking out a bit.
      Had raced at track for A+D and manager comes up to me. Do you want to work here ? Its a long day and shit pay! So of course said yes! Work Sunday morning race then afternoon race was my pay. Then go back the next week to work club races. Thankfully never took any crap from drivers ! Sometimes ended up racing someone who I made a call against!
      Perception is the worst part. What you see from right side of track is not the same from left side and 10 feet further down! Or shit happens when you change focus from a group of karts or cars!
      It was actually a great " job"
      Lap 1 behind the wheel is less stressful than it is holding a flag!

    Honestly I don't know why in between a few years or so something happens to a Marshall
    I mean marshalls may even the world's kindest people for the simple fact that if a racer crashes , they will immediately help that person, no matter the risk.
    They will even run as fast as they can,no matter how far it is , or how tired they already are , because I am confident they would hold it against themselves if someone died on their watch. They would feel guilty and would probably dwell on the incident for time to come
    It would probably haunt their lives as they think that they could have done something to stop that
    Marshalls are willing to risk their life in order to save others' and so I think that marshalls are very kind and compassionate souls

    I was a corner worker at 14, and a corner marshal at 17, and even came back to it for a few years ~35. I still have some of the hairier moments glued into the mental video playlist, for sure.... "Marshals are the mainstay," for sure, but the best marshals will drill their crew on the coming TRAFFIC, the guest RACER, and then EVERYTHING ELSE. You see a lot of that here, where somebody rolling a vehicle would rather have their leg run over than stop the progress of getting (car+workers) behind a barrier. Just so typical. *"Always face traffic!"*

  • @StarkRaven59
    @StarkRaven59 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think the biggest thing this video highlights is the need to request and get a "point". Getting a signal of the last car before a track is clear before doing hot track work is vital. Also getting a signal when traffic is coming back around is vital. I work a station at a vintage car race in Pittsburgh, which is over a blind crest into a hard braking zone. There's a chicane made of hay, so it frequently requires fixing of some form or other. Getting a point from the station ahead is vital to keeping the chicane clear without stopping the race or getting run over.
    Also, cars are a mess to marshal for. They can, and they do, go freaking anywhere. It's impossible to predict where a car will go, so you have to keep your head on a swivel and be ready to run for cover. Ideally, always have cover when working a car event. Motorcycles are comparatively easy, once the bike has left its wheels, it's going in mostly one direction.

    next to last clip, gotta love someone using a dry chem extinguisher on a grass fire, but that's NASCAR for you - only series that wants you to use DC over water.
    Overall however, this video shows that corner workers need to STAY BEHIND the barriers and let safety deal with anything on a hot track.

    • @andyowens5494
      @andyowens5494 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure why you wouldn't use powder? Its the first line of attack available for use on everything at a race track, and generally the first one in my hand because it deals with everything from fuel to grass, and that could easily have been a fuel leak onto grass. We don't even have plain water extinguishers at any track I've been at.

    • @stephenbritton9297
      @stephenbritton9297 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andyowens5494 dry chem is corrosive to electronics, so a lot of series don’t like it. Also, an ABC dry chem is like 10x more effective on the B fires than the A fires, so you’ll get more bang for your spray on the grass fire with water. Where I work we carry equal amounts of both types on the trucks. Options!

    A lot of these seem to occur when the marshal bends down to grab a piece of debris while running across the track. You'd think that F1 at least can spare a few buckeroos and give the guys responsible for cleaning up debris a broom or two so they can quickly sweep the stuff without needing to bed down all the way? A street broom is only $20, and even if there are 500 marshals on a track, that's $10,000 for 500 street brooms, and that's assuming that every track marshal needs to clean the track. I'm pretty sure that a single set of the tires that they use cost more than that, and they can just hand the brooms out at the beginning of the weekend and collect them back. If that sounds like too much work, you have to remember that Pirelli has guys picking up every single piece of rubber from the track to prevent their chemistry from being revealed.
