This is a wonderful presentation about post stroke pain. I had a few strokes which have left me with good mobility but awful migraines. They're not particularly painful but very debilitating in that they impact motor functions and sensations. Covid has proved a huge barrier to getting good advice leaving me ( and others ) to fend for ourselves. After watching this I know to research down the Central Post Stroke avenue. Many thanks Dr McAlpine for posting this. My love and well wishes to fellow stroke survivors. I know it's hard but stay positive and do your best to extract every bit of joy out of life in what ever capacity you have to enjoy it

I am so glad I found this. I've always said my migraine as a kid was connected to my Post Stroke pain. This is the first time I've seen a doctor confirm it. I also get pinched nerves in my shoulders frequently. I was a 16 yr old female when I had my stroke and have all four types of post stroke pain. 21 years later & I'm still dealing with it.

Thanks so much this describes my pain perfectly. I had a stroke may 2020 4 months later i have terrible days and nights with this pain. Not sure whether my doctor believes me but it can be totally incapacitating.

I have been suffering from post stroke pain on my entire right side for almost 18 months. It is unbearable. I found a few research papers about vestibular caloric stimulation and how it can help thalamic pain syndrome. I convinced my dr to do it today, and it worked! My pain level has dropped from about a 7-8 to a 3-4. It is a miracle. It is so easy to do, and a little uncomfortable but not painful at all. Basically the nurse irrigated my ears with really cold water. It makes your eyes jump and makes the room spin for a minute or two. It was nothing compared to the pain I have had every day. This was at 10:00 this morning, and now 12 hours later there has been a definite reduction in the pain. The burning sensation is almost gone, and the edge is off of the general pain. The tingling is still there, but not as intense. According to the research, it could even get better in the next few days. I am going back to the dr to do it again next week. It is truly a miracle and I can not believe it worked. Here is the research I found -- www.researchgate.net/publication/5305658_Behavioural_evidence_for_vestibular_stimulation_as_a_treatment_for_post-stroke_pain.
It has given me hope when I thought there was none, and I was doomed to a lifetime of horrible pain. I am only 45 years old and have lots of life left to live! PLEASE try it - it is so easy - I want to shout it from the rooftops!
    Kristin

Miss Kristin hi, how long does that last? Are you doing it by yourself now? Do you grow tolerance to it? I’m 29 with central pain and I’d like as much info about this as possible from your experience.

Thanks for this. My older brother has been really struggling with Central Pain Syndrome post-stroke. I am looking for resources to try and help extended family members to better understand why he has withdrawn from social situations and does not seem like "himself" even though (to others) he looks as if he has experienced a fairly good recovery or has minimal symptoms in his limbs, etc.

Donnie Ray have you considered gearson therapy to assist the healing process and distilled water only fasting for 1-3 days with supervision best I can think of combined with oxygen more step therapy.

I have cramps and restless legs and spams due to stroke. I had it in June 2019. Try to eat things lighter on your stomach. Exercise daily and push yourself to move your arms and legs, when you exercise do it as much with the good side as you do with the bad side to strengthen all the muscles. When you feel pain lie down and do breathing exercises, also ask your doctor for a light muscle relaxant. And pray even if you don't feel like it just to boost your morale and to know there is a higher power God that cares about you. The pain is a sign of life and if we have life we would by the grace of God get well soon. My prayers for you, get well soon inshaAllah
