I remember learning this in China when I was little, the last line does seem rather pessimistic, but there is a second more optimistic interpretation - The dusk sun has limitless beauty, only when (只是) it is near the end. Meaning the end is beautiful
My understanding as a Chinese: The first sentence: When the sun goes down, I am depressed. 2. Drive to this ancient plateau 3. The sunset is infinitely beautiful 4. It's just approaching dusk. Thank you, you explained very well，❤❤❤👍👍👍
