It was getting late and I was feeling out of sorts, so I took a ride in my coach up to the ancient plateau.
The sunset was limitlessly wonderful; it’s only that it was close to dusk.

Hey very well explained and such a beautiful poem. I remember learning this in China when I was little, the last line does seem rather pessimistic, but there is a second more optimistic interpretation - The dusk sun has limitless beauty, only when (只是) it is near the end. Meaning the end is beautiful
