I like that way of doing spots. I agree with you on the top dressing being filled with all kinds of stuff. I found lots of rocks and bark in the top soil that was supposed to be screened. I have made 3 attempts to overseed 15 month old sod. My next try will be trying your way. Thanks for the tips.
Any time I bring in soil (top dress) etc .all I get is weed infestation. I have a small yard which is perfectly maintained. My strong recommendation is to use potting soil.
I learned this method from the legendary gardener Jerry Baker maybe 30 years ago.. Pre germinate in a bucket. Works great. I've tried to convince other people to do this but I'm met with skepticism and outright scoffing. So be it. I also do test pre germination of old flower seeds in packs. To see if they are viable before going to the trouble of planting them.
Thanks Sam, yet another laid-back and down to earth lawn care video for us average joe lawn nuts. Great work mate, hope it all goes well which I'm sure it will. Your lawn is indeed looking awesome again by the way, well done :-) Mick
Congrats on reaching 10k subs sam. I was ur 100👍 for this video. I have seen u do this before and it does work great. I have also taken it a step further and grown some grass in a container to repair pee spot damage. I simply transplant some of the full grown grass. Cheers from colorado🤙🏽
Thanks a lot! It´s actually crazy! For a small channel like mine, never thought I would get to 1k even :) I am also preparing some containers with ready to go grass, that works great as well! thanks for the support, always appreciated! 🙏
haha for sure! I always use too much seed! 🙈 I feel like I rather take too much then coming up short and having to do it again :) The KBG on the front has taken really nicely actually! I feel I almost need to mow it as much as the Rye and the Fescue almost, it really does take off once it does!
Hi Sam ! My hands always get dirty, even with gloves, somehow soil manages to get inside them after all...😅 very interesting video, I am waiting for the outcome. I will definitely try it. Thanks!
Quality video Sam (as always) you told me about this method about a year ago, still need to try it out. Laws coming along rather nicely now. I think fescue is the way to go. You end up with a self repairing lawn. Rye was nice for the strips, but hey does it need feeding (rye that is) 👍 oh and congratulations on achieving that TH-cam milestone ❤
Hey Steve, thanks a lot mate! Try it, it´s really easy, hand down the easiest way to repair small areas. Thanks for the support mate, never could get to 10K without the support from you all! 🙏
Don´t think I mentioned it, good point, need to remember to mention the mowing aspect of it. I generally just keep mowing my lawn as usual, I mow straight over it, unless it´s a full bare spot that I can go around I just go over it and I have never had any issues with it.
I used Rölunda for this video, but the top soil I buy is from a local producer just 10 min from me outside stockholm, has really nice composted top soil.
It does OK but if you play soccer on it and kids play all the time then it struggles, that´s why I like to mix it with the Rye, since Rye handles traffic way better.
I felt like a monostand was a bit risky in the end. Other species have better resistance to other things, so I felt like it would be best for the lawn to spread the risk so to say. Also yes, I am hoping it will cope with the winter here a bit better. But even though everyone says to me that the lawn is dying ONLY because of the rye, I am not convinced, I think there are more reasons than just that. So also a way to experiment and see if that´s true :)
@@SamsLawn I see, the lawn is nit dying because if the ryegrass. I have ryegrass, fescue and kbg all mixed and I lose some of it every winter because of snow mold. Kbg seems to be the most resistant to it but I still lose some of it too. I have some bent grass that seems to be unaffected from the snow mold, I ve been trying to get rid of it with tenacity because it stands out. It loves to be cut low like under an inch but it also likes water and fertilizer, anyway your grass is looking great again.
Didn't get rid of it but I have introduced a lot of creeping red fescue, trying to make it less vulnerable to disease and increase cold tolerance, let's see if it works 🤞🏼
Does it matter what way the pre germinated grass seed sits on the soil will the roots find the right way round so they grow downwards and the grass grows upwards? Id be worried the roots wouldn't take hold?!
Hey Mate, It is important to get them down to the soil and get as good seed to soil contact as you can, if you have space or air in between the roots will take, but they will be very fragile since you need to wait longer for it to get further down into the soil, (if that makes sense?)
@@cohenkevinloriqueen818 It could, but usually toppdress is hard to get compacted if you don´t add more pressure to it than just water. Some of the seeds will for sure germinate but I would bet that more of the seeds will germinate if you compact it more.
This method is hand down the best method for smaller areas I would say. If you are doing a full overseeding of the entire lawn then you would need a ton of soil to put seeds it. So in that case just pre-germinating in water is better.
Hey Mate! Glad you found the video helpful! I am actually going to do some more product reviews, wasn´t planning on the mosquito magnet, but maybe I´ll do a review, need to branch out a bit from just lawn care :)
@@SamsLawn Thank you for your reply. I live in Stockholm and mosquitos seem to love me very much, especially this summer! 😁 Are you happy with the mygg-magnet?
@@kuroshmotamedian3521 Mosquitos love Iranians 😉 Very happy with it, I was sceptical when I got it, but it really does make a huge difference with the amount of mosquitos we have. But still when you sit outside at night you would need one of those Thermacells, the magnet does not take 100% of the mosquitos.
i love your impatience ! it makes me smile I can so relate to it

I agree, and it´s been getting worse lately. Everyone is cutting corners I bet. Potting soil might be a better option.

Perfect timing for me Sam, I'm just about to tackle the same sort of issue, going to give your method a go.

Great video Sam, I'll use this method this summer!
Awesome Martin! It´s really a good method! Let me know how it turns out for you.
You’re the man. Good work. That was a ton of seed, no?
Also, you have to wait a full season full KBG to pop. Stay the course.
You should see KBG from first season Reno to the next summer. It takes off
