I built two of these in the ‘80s and put much time into the finishing details. My first one flew well with great glider performance. So, I modified it such that the SRBs were powered and I fixed the fins permanently. The stack launched well without the orbiter as a test. Both engines performed as expected. Next flight was with the orbiter. And one of the C6-5s cato’d, destroying the whole rocket. Naturally this was a demonstration flight in front of my 8th grade science class. A few years later I built another, but kept it as designed with the single motor mount in the ET. Trimming the second build was much harder for some reason. Both kits had the lead weights to balance the glider.
@@modelrockets3215 My bad. I was 15 when my Dad got me my first set. It was a starter set that came with the launch pad , an Alpha 3 kit 3 engines, igniters and recovery wadding. He also got me the Bandit rocket to go with it.
Nice model. I just received my 2024 Estes catalog. I looked up an old catalog from 1977 just to compare the prices. In 77 the Mosquito was .98 cents. Now it's $5.99. Talk about sticker shock. I also saw the Saturn V. $29.95 in 77. Now it's $79.95.
I had this one circa 1990, but did a poor job building it. It went up a few feet and then flew horizontally over the field where I launched it. It nosed into the grass and was obliterated. I wish I could get my hands on another one and try again.
Beautiful. Nice narration explaining the impressive detail & repair work you did.
Absolutely wonderful restoration.

Thank you!
Nice! I like the rocket of the day videos! They said don't do it it but it turned out great, great restoration!
Do you remember the Cold Power rockets? They also made a Cold Power dragster.
@mikestanley9176 Before my time. I see them in the old catalogs though and that dragster.
@@modelrockets3215 I think they showed up in the 1975 or 1976 catalogs.
@mikestanley9176 I wasn't even born yet. I have those catalogs though. I actually has Estes 1st catalog also

@mikestanley9176 Right I've seen. Those old price were dirt cheap. I think a Saturn V is 99.99 and the new Space Shuttle is 79.99

Yeah this can be a tricky one
Beautiful rocket - I like it better than the newest version
Cooooolll !!!!!!😃🚀
Wow, I never finished mine
I smashed the nose of the shuttle like 3 times. I never had it glide right.
@erikbrazzale6978 Takes some trimming. Lil clay on the rear, lil on the wing maybe. I've seen them glide pretty well.
