Unlocking the Old Testament Part 14 - Deuteronomy 1

  • David Pawson explains that in Deuteronomy God’s law had to be repeated for a new generation as almost every adult who had come out of Egypt had died. They had to enter into the covenant with God as their parents had. 2 key phrases are repeated time & again. One is “the land the Lord your God gives you”. They are reminded that this land is an undeserved gift. The other is “go in and possess the land”. Everything you receive from God is a gift, but you must go in and take it otherwise you won’t get it. The message of Deuteronomy is simple, you can keep the land as long as you keep My law, but if you don’t keep it, even though you own the land, you won’t be free to live in it and enjoy it. Ownership is unconditional, occupation is conditional. The covenant linked the land and the law of God. The Israelites were not given the land because of their righteousness but because of the current inhabitants’ wickedness. Everything God tells the Israelites not to do is what was happening already in the Promised Land with its current occupants. Deuteronomy is made up of 3 long speeches, Moses talking to the people in the last week of his life. He speaks to them like a dying father to his children. It is warm, expressive and emotional and yet very well written. .

    Mistake re the statue. David is excellent but if you Google check 'Basingstoke phallic statue' you will see it is a statue that accidentally, and only remotely resembles a phallic symbol, no more than an old-fashioned round postal pillar box! Also it's not marble, but granite. Thus just as secular people might make ill-informed criticisms of the Bible and Christianity, so Christians must be even more careful not to make ill-informed criticisms.

    • @DavidPawsonMinistry
      @DavidPawsonMinistry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi B - I cannot refer this to David as he is no longer with us - I also cannot comment personally but are you aware David lived in a home in Basingstoke for some 40 years ?
      - David was not quoting something he heard about or found on Google - but something he saw every day and knew very well in person

    • @willowwobble

      @@DavidPawsonMinistry Thank you for your prompt reply and explanation. May I take this opportunity to say that my Christian friends and I were sad to hear of David's passing this summer. We are going through the bible using his very helpful series and appreciate that it has been given freely. I pass on the links to the teaching to Christians in Nepal. Re the sculpture it is one of those 'can of worms' which stirs up emotion but is difficult to discus rationally. I can understand the controversy over the design because I am a professional art teacher, sculptor and Christian and have myself had sculptures exhibited in public places (but without controversy). In my opinion the design of the Basingstoke sculpture is ill-concieved and not appropriate for it's location. Mr Peglar, the sculptor, claims that it was not intended to be phallic looking, but he cannot be so naive as to be surprised at the controversy it caused. Other designs could have much better fulfilled his stated aims and the citizens' hopes for a suitable public artwork. It is, sadly, yet another example of a town council's wasted opportunity to place something beautiful and edifying in a prominent place (another being 'Barnhenge' in Barnstaple). But, even though many may find it annoying and a waste of public money, in my opinion the design is too ambiguous to be labelled as an obvious phallic symbol. The local people voted overwhelmingly to keep it but I can understand why David was so against it that he mentioned it in his message. A big 'thank -you' to you and your team for your ministry in making David's material available to the world. God bless you.

    Interesting fact: Torah just means instructions. Establishing only the first 5 books of the Bible as "torah" is a rabbinic establishment. God's instruction is throughout. Not saying the video is doing this, but reducing God's instruction to only 5 books and call it "for the jews only" is a great tactic by satan to make a bunch of disobedient people that claim the name of Christ.
    "These people love me with their lips, but their heart is far from me."

    I'm sorry but that's a paradoxical proclamation coming from God. Unconditional ownership / Conditional occupation cancel each other out. That's a false gift from God, or not a gift at all. You cannot give someone something as a gift and say it's yours forever, yet at the same time tell them it's use thereof is conditional. It makes no sense, because the second statement 'conditional use' nullifies the term 'unconditional ownership' . You cannot have your cake and eat it too. Not a gift not unconditional.

    • @DavidPawsonMinistry
      @DavidPawsonMinistry  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If I may say you are missing the point
      - owning a house, having the title to it ..... and living in the house are different things
      - you can own a house and live somewhere else and but it can be occupied by squatters/foreigners
      When the Jews were exile in Babylon - the time came when some where allowed and chose to return - others chose to stay in Babylon but that does not change that Israel was gifted to them
      It does not nullify anything and is certain not a paradox - its Biblical Truth - reject it and you deny what the Bible states - this has nothing to do with David Pawsons views
