I did same. I did my lower back with deadlift, pendley low and one time it happened againt with good morning. That's because we do these exercises without first getting the body part strong first. From what I learned from power lifters as an example, they do certain exercises to first get the glutes strong, the hamstring, knees and ab strong. The reason is the muscle tissue that is huge and is connected onto the spine right up I think the 15 disc and down throgh lower back, through and connecting the hips, and also nerves drive down through the legs and knees. So I learned to get these strong first doing a range of exercises with and without weights. Not heavy but progress later in many months to heavy. I have never had a back pain problem ever again when doing good mornings, deadlifts and pendley rows. I am glad went through this accident. It gave me a lot of knowledge and I hope anyone here reading this today even when video posted 10 years ago to look up what I have mentioned. Get these body parts strong first before doing these powerlifting strength lifts especially with heavy weights. be careful of our ego. Just a note on the comment that Bruce actually injured his back having sex: The ONLY place I've ever read this was in the book Unsettled Matters by Tom Bleeker, who was-I shit you not-Linda Lee's EX-HUSBAND. Weird. Both who wrote it and the "secrets" it reveals. I can’t encourage spending money on it, but if you ever get a chance to read the thing for free, please do so, because the claims it makes are fucking hilarious. Linda, obviously, was NOT happy her ex went ahead and published something like this, and true story: I loaned the book to a friend of mine who was taking classes with the late Howard Williams, maybe the best student to come out of the Bruce Lee/James Lee Oakland school. Anyway, my friend totally cracked up reading it, brought it to Howard who was asked if ANY of the shit was true, and Howard just couldn't believe his ears and asked to read it himself. The very next class, he told my friend he was honestly thinking of buying a plane ticket and showing up at Tom Bleeker's house to have words with him. This is incorrect Bruce Lee’s last disciple who is with him said that he was doing reps of squats with 350 earlier in the week his back started bothering him so when he finally days later, did the Good Morning his back completely went out the damage was done from him, squatting too heavy
Kareem Abdul Jabaar stated in an interview that Bruce Lee injured his back while they, as in Kareem and Bruce, were lifting weights together. Although you can strain your back while having sex, especially someone Bruce's size, that was not the cause of his six month injury. Current researched results from a forensic Dr who saw all of Bruce Lee's medical reports showed that the amount of cortisone injections Bruce was having May have contributed to his death. Cortisone shots were a specific treatment for back injuries in that era of medicine and over use causes adrenaline reactions which can cause fainting, Heart palpitations, and even death.
According to Bruce's medical records, from what he told his doctor (in Bruce's own words) was that he injured his back during sexual intercourse. Could he have lied to his doctor to present a macho image, sure. Regardless, this is what is in black and white in Bruce's medical records.
Not much certainty of memory overall from Dan here to be 100% confident what he's saying, so IDK who to trust...except maybe widow Linda's side of the story if there is one on this specific matter.
Good mornings with excessive weight can rupture a lumbar disc. It’s ridiculous to fathom rupturing a disc during sex. I’ve worked in orthopedics for over 25 years and have NEVER had a patient with such an injury that was attributed to intercourse.
i dont believe that he got injured because of to much weight because people said he was one of the strongest people. i heard people say that its because he did not do warm up exercises.
His strength is irrelevant. Warming up couldn't have prevented this. This exercise puts too much pressure on the lower back. The weight very far from the low back and he is bending over. Recipe for disaster. I wouldn't do any weight with that exercise. Especially when he stretches his back so much and does frequent leg raises and sit ups. Those can also put some pressure on the low back. I've injured my back from doing too many with my regular workouts.
Of course he did , straining the back during certain exercises like good morning or deadlifts are typical. Very common . Ironically the exact same exercises are used too rehab the very same injury it's just the weight is lighter. What a weird notion ! He couldn't have injured lifting because he was strong ??? Really are you that naive ? Strong men like myself live with pain and injury because of lifting weights That are too heavy. Especially people obsessed with training like Bruce lee who was historically using opium too train. He was an opioid addict. The sex story sounds like a cover up
Deadlifts and good mornings are very safe for the lower back when done with correct form. You also don't need to do warmup exercises unless you're lifting very heavy weight. Bruce Lee wasn't very strong so it's definitely not because he didn't do warmup exercises. You don't magically break your spine just because you don't warm up. That'd mean that in real life you can never lift anything heavy like a rock or pick up a person unless you lift a bunch of lighter things first. He injured his back most likely because he was overtraining, using very incorrect form and weight that was too heavy (which helped to cause incorrect form) so he crushed his disc. Injury like this from exercises like deadlifts or even good mornings is actually very rare. I lift weights and I do warm up but I start with fairly heavy weight such as Deadlift 140kg 5 reps 170kg 5reps Then go into working sets of 200kg Or bench press 100kg 5 reps Then go into working sets of 120kg Or overhead press 60kg 5 sets 70kg 5 sets Then go into working sets of 80kg So the warmup is not that much and is not that far away from the main weight I lift either. If I had to do my 200kg sets in deadlift without the warmup I could do it and I don't expect I'd get injured. The warmups help to 1. Identify any injuries you're unaware of. It might suddenly hurt when you lift on a warmup set so then you know you're injured and not to lift weights today. If you suddenly lift your max and you're injured but didn't realise it, it could be bad. 2. Prime the muscles and nervous system. It tells them you're about to lift a heavy weight so they get ready and you're stronger and can do more reps easily on the next sets Warmups don't magically make the difference between getting injured or not getting injured though. If it's wsm deadlifting 500kg then it might be a different matter. Warmups might be more essential. For the weight Bruce Lee was lifting he didn't need warmups he just needed proper form and to reduce the weight. Also he needed more rest days. He was overtraining and straining his body, preventing it from healing and preventing himself from being able to do proper form because his body was too exhausted. That's why he made a stupid mistake and crushed his disc with weights. If we could see exactly what he did I'm sure we'd see something ridiculous that every normal person would know not to do. Like he had his head touching his knees, or the barbell balanced on his lower spine or something as ridiculous as that. At least we'd see something like a good morning with absurd form where be bends his spine beyond anything normal or healthy then collapses under the weight.
