It is the arranger who then burns midnight oil along with different artists for hours. Shanker was fond of giving sweet slow mandolin based music. Jaikishan, fast with full of violin heavy counters in between the song. Jaikishan used the talent of Rafi saab and made him sing across 3 octaves.Thank to Prithvi raaj kapoor for having discovered this duo.

Most amazing arrangements by SJ. I happened to be in Ahmedabad when they presented their music with full orchestra. I was just 18 mesmerized by their music & the musicians who performed. This experience influenced me in my being violinist. Thanks for the history.

The magical compositions of Shankar-Jaikishan of course included Mozart, Beethoven and other western styles which they transformed and used to the absolute best of Indian style which entertained the millions of music lovers for the last six decades at least. We have been privileged to listen to the compositions of SJ, OP Naiyyar, Madan Mohan, Salil Chowdhury, Naushad and Roshan. The superb orchestra used and directed by SJ included a lot of violins, pianos, accordians, flutes, saxophones and guitars as well as Indian Sarod and Sitar of all types. Thanks for posting.
Thank you very much for compiling this. This is one of the best audio/video compilation I have seen on youtube. Each good music director had their own single area of excellence, but versatility of SJ is unmatched. Their background scores can stand up as excellent compositions.

Violin rolls almost disappeared from Hindi cinema music after SJ. You rarely hear them even in the movies with good background music. I guess RK missed them too, therefore last time I heard good violin rolls were in song "Tujhe bulaye" from movie "Ram Teri Ganga Meli".
Whatever we express in appreciation of SJ will always be shorts of words and expressions. They were the greatest Music Directors gave such a music which is still popular even after 60 years.

No doubt that SJ were masters on the works of Melody of the songs but then the credits go to the entire team. Sebastian Sir brought a new colour in the music of SJ. Dattaram ji on the rhythm side. Also SJ were much influenced from the world music especially Ron Goodwin whose almost 90% of the compositions and works we hear somewhere in SJ songs. Sebastian Sir used to take the base of the original and recreate on his own style. Few were almost even directly adopted. One very regular practice of SJ was that Jaikishan along with Kishore Desai Sir , Sometimes some senior front row violin musicians used to go in the evening in various Restuarants. If Jaikishan liked the tune being played by the live orchestra he would ask his fellow musicians to remember the tune and same night they would execute on the harmonium. Jaikishan was a master of backgrounds. He along with Sebastian Sir would work out on backgrounds so fast. Over all it was a teamwork of the two with along 15 to 16 people headed by Sebastian Sir.

Even if there was a mass migration of Goan musicians in 1947 ( this is funny because, Goa was a Portuguese territory which was annexed by India only In 1961, not 1947 when the British left) all the other music directors also had an equal privilege to these musicians but none of them had such an affinity for violins as SJ and Shanker in particular did. Shanker was a percussionist originally but he learned piano and became a pianist later. I think this made him develop a love for symphonies.

Those who studied SJ's music closely would know that Shankar Jaikishen's violins is actually Shankar's violins.
