Great performances by all, but I came back just to listen to that trombone solo again... with the 20 or so seconds he was allotted, I don't think he could have possibly done a better job.
I'm going to come out and say it- Eric is my favorite trumpet player. He gets such a rich tone and has a flexibility that is flawless, which even Maynard struggled to achieve. Love hearing him play every time.
I agree - I like Erics tone much more than Maynard -- but there was only one Maynard - Maynard knew how to get down and dirty with his tone - which I also liked --
Literally any track on a J.J Johnson or Slide Hampton record features a better trombone solo than what I just heard. Nakagawa-san is a phenomenal trombonist, much respect to him, but I don't know about the whole musical perfection thing, in terms of harmony it was far from satisfying, even if it's over Rocky music.
@@MikkoLaulainen th-cam.com/video/OEx7tCB9hG0/w-d-xo.html , tell me how the trombone solo above can compare to the JJ solo I just linked. In terms of harmony, clarity, phrasing, time feel and technique it just blows most others out of the water. I gave Mr. Nakagawa his due respect, all I was saying is that particular solo is very far from "musical perfection".
@@jro1472 I can agree he is an amazing player, but to me eijiro's solo fit perfectly with gonna fly now. Plus these are two very different styles of music. Slow jazz is meant to have that soft airy tone and fluidity, but gonna fly now is an upbeat song that was written to get your adrenaline pumping, and what better than a fast paced solo with jet like tone, octave switches, and those held high notes that he glisses into? Plus even with such a short amount of time, he was really able to get a lot into it
The skill of these guys/girls are crazy. But the thing that got me was their TONE. I mean seriously their individual sound is just amazing espcially bone and bari IMO. Great to listen to.
Miyashiro is insanely good. When he plays other concerts he grooves out and sounds great. It actually appears that he was having an off night here. You can tell when he kind of grimaces at the end. He knows he can do it way better. Even so, he did a great job.
@@DNKG669considering the fact that everyone here is commenting on how good the trombone solo was(which is really good btw) I think “he” refers to the trombonist.
this is the very first song I ever heard from maynard im sure hed be damn proud of eric he sounds almost identical to maynard he learned from the best did I mention maynard is was and will always be the best trumpet player in the world IMHO I love erics playing its like maynard livs on lol
Man, I just can't say enough about that trombone player. Fantastic, classic sound. VERY well in tune, and great ideas played on a very hard instrument to solo well on. One of the best trombone players I have ever heard ~
verdaderamente de lujo que sonido el saxo baritono sorprendente gracias x existir muchachos al escucharlos me dan aliento a seguir viviendo GUILLERMO DE SALTA ARGENTINA
Eric has fantastic chops and a very distinct style that I really like to listen to. Funny on this video, the bari sax player starts his solo about 5 seconds too early - check 1:25. Looks like the other musicians are chuckling
I think that Eric is one of the few guys alive that still captures maynard in terms width of sound and character. But no one will ever be like the boss.
Ron, Eric is great. I love the Miyashiro recording, but nothing original. You need to listen to the Maynard recording on a track and not on TH-cam. If you play the trumpet and have a good ear you can tell the difference between the imitator and the teacher..between the two in playing, phrasing and tone. There is more to it than playing the notes. A Jazz Crusader
Learn to read, THEN comment. I said I have done clinics with fantastic young kids who play as well or better than Eric. This was during my time as leat tpt for Woody, Buddy, Thad Jones and other bands. Jon Faddis played like this as a teen, as did I and hundreds of other young players. There are hundreds of high school and college bands out there doing MF charts. I was lead tpt in one of them and later been a clinician for many of the excellent young big bands all over the world.
Helping my students to be BETTER and MORE MUSICAL than copycat Eric is not insulting them. They are taught to be stylish, competent and original, not copies of famous players. We all went through our Maynard phase in school and OUTGREW IT. I have done taught clinics where 16yr old kids played as well or better than Eric. Maynard imitators are a dime a dozen and ALL OF THEM are a waste of time.
I findt it almost a bit "boring" to listen to Erick compared to Ferguson, because erick is playing it to perfect... When maynard is playing his dancing and rocking the song whith MUCH moore feelings... No offend to mr. Miyashiro, but his style is to "strait" to be playing this type of music...
Best rendition yet! Chords got a little funky for the tenor guy, but wow, trumpet licks were tasty! The bone and bari guys were solid! Synth guy did his homework too... kept it full of color. Nice Eric!
Be original - don't copy. It's childish. And, one can be both an artist and present themselves well onstage. Look at Wynton - always in a nice suit. . . .end transmission . . . . .
No bigpapi, I think you're just proof that there's too many stupid people in this world. And by the way, your comment about not teaching reading makes absolutely no sense...Gold star for you!
Yes, Eric has his own model made by Yamaha that is, unfortunately, only available in Japan for the time being. He also has a custom trumpet AND flugel mouthpiece made by Yamaha with the outside design of Maynard's old FBL mouthpiece. If you search through Yamaha's Japanese sites hard enough, it's all there. While I'm typing, may I also say that Eric's solo in the beginning is awesome! I've never heard anyone do that before, and Eric pulls a great lick out of nowhere...genius!
glad nobody commented on how he blundered that note at the end, this takes incredible chops to play at this level and this intensity and this much tone throughout KUDOS
I saw Eric when he was with Buddy Rich's band in 1985 or 86. He was fantastic back then, and you could tell by the way Buddy reacted to his solos that Buddy was quite impressed.
Du grand art, avec un A majuscule ! Merci hhaayydn de nous faire partager 4 minutes de bonheur absolu. Bravo Eric Miyashiro et tous ses musiciens d'exception.
i'm an alumnus from the Boston Latin School. I was there watching they're big band play. What do you play? was it for the combo or large ensemble? and what division?
@ALPHABARISAX10 If you think that bari player sucks then you're clueless... while I'm betting DiBlasio is saying the same thing about you to his colleagues when you're not around. Unless you're out doing it yourself it's best to keep your mouth shut and demonstrate some respect.

That Trombone solo though!
Anybody here in 2020 for that trombone solo to soothe the heart?
It was amazing trombone solo.
I'm in 2024 for it.
Here in 2024!
Thumbs up if you play trombone.
Trombone ftw. that trombone solo looked really hard.
Bass bone ftw

Maynard was probably a little too coked out.
You will never, ever hear a better trombone solo than you heard right here. Musical perfection in 16 seconds flat.

Trombone and bari solos really nice. Love the tone of the bari player.

If I couldn't see it I'd have bet money that was a valve trombone. Awesome solo. Guy sounds like Frank Rosolino.
I almost shit my pants after hearing the tenor sax solo.
