    Aw it is just so good. You could place her in any decade since 1920 to present day and she wouldn't sound out of place. One of my favorite artists with the sound of a true timeless classic.

    its funny how most people complaining about her melisma don't know what it's called, but i'm guessing they just unconditionally dislike it, without considering the differences between a good one and a bad one. she's selective and mindful about where she does it, and doesn't spend time sliding to find the right notes, she jumps between them instantly. those are the signs of a REALLY good singer, someone's who's mastered what they do.

    • @theTrend7
      @theTrend7 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      they don't know,they're just talking.....and probably can't sing.A sign of people who live in tiny boxes and think everyone else should too!

    She is such a frickin DNA-upgraded genius talent. The intention and meaning behind every song's storytelling unyieldingly leads to Love, considering Love, understanding Love and Freedom in some way of communicating it with sophisticated measures of implementation. Why isn't she on everyone's lips instead of Christina Aguilera or whoever and whatever? Think about it. Anyways, she's a timeless chameleon who speaks her Truth across every style and genre.

    It's true there are so much trash and garbage in the music industry
    but in all that trash there are still amazing artist like:
    Janele Monae, Adele, Lupe Fiasco, Macklemore, Emeli Sandé, Erykah Badu and many more
    who show that art is still alive and breathing. And i honor and praise these artist.

This is the first time i have ever heard her voice ;$ im in luv. and the first time ive heard in a 'live' kinda way. damn... amazing. Too many melismas tho in my opinion... she shoulda left some of the melismas at the door to let it b more simple

She posed for the cover or Vogue and is becoming more and more well-known everyday. Her SNL performance surprised a lot of people. I can't wait to see what she does next. If people can adore Lady Gaga for being an individual for wearing meat.Then wearing an Afro or a TAILOR suite, God I just can't take this world. Why can't natural African heritage and features be beautiful...I'm just so sick of hearing people talk about how "weird" she is. We think we have made progress but all we have progressed to is nothing ...Im so tired of friends and people thinking Im not beautiful because I don't wear perm. All this music about being yourself don't even stand to be real.

  • @Brazchameleon8716

    I think that standards don't need to be sung with so many riffs and runs, because they have so much more impact when sung simply. That's why I don't like this version very much. She has a killer voice though and I think she could've killed this song if she would've toned it down a bit.
    Hey no blow to her as a singer tho, she has a ton of talent and some crazy good control. One of the better mainstream artists nowadays.

    • @papermoon2551
      @papermoon2551 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeh. Not sure why she chose to sing it this way. She usually makes sure and she sings simply as she did for Goldfinger at the White House, etc. I can't get enough of her but yeh, the noodles, runs, etc, I feel are digressions in her gorgeous stroll of sound. Much love to Janelle always.

    @Goalie2000MTL2000 If you are not over 30, you won't understand my position. You really want to look back 20 years from now and hear what's on the radio? Nicki Manaj, LMFAO, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Katy Perry, etc. Most music nowadays is "dumbed" down. There are some truly talented artists out there, but the majority is garbage. Fact is, the line of deviation amongst artists is blurred. Everyone wants a remix, club song, dance song, etc. Completely watered down!

    Janelle Monae could do it all including Jazz. I would love to work with her. A lot of today's singers don't even know who Nat King Cole or Judy Garland were let alone Charlie Chaplin. Mad Respect for this artist. I am a believer - Onaje Allan Gumbs(arranger and keyboardist on"Betcha By Golly Wow" and "The Answer is You" for Phyllis Hyman as well as "I Go Crazy" and "Just a Game" for Will Downing).

    I could listen to songs like this for hours..
    And her outfit is nice!
    SO many people say it doesn't fit to her.. and it doesn't look like a female look.
    But if she likes to wear it, it's okay!
    I dont think it doesn't fit to her =) I think it fits to her style!
    If every beautiful woman would wear those dresses that look all the same, the world would be boring! =)

  • @darealestn09
    @darealestn09 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    hmmm...I think Janelle Monae was a little nervous in this performance (i guess becuz she was performing for billboard) which would explain all of the runs she does. Even in the original or other live performances she didn't do that many runs. Still sounds amazing...most people who get nervous get pitchy, she just does perfectly pitched overelaborate runs. :-)

    So few singers just truly sing anymore, choosing to do more theatrics or overly loud & too long note holding pseudo power ballads that sound like a tortured cat. So nice to see a classic style singer relying on her voice and not her ability to scream out long notes.

    I'm sure I'll get flogged for posting this....but her voice kind of annoys me. It's way too wispy. When she's singing the high notes, I just want them to be over. Her voice is very good....but it sounds like there's an air leak somewhere in there.

    Just to be fair and show both sides: Some of her improvising is R&B and would have loved to see her with this arrangement, to have learned and master more Jazz scales and improvising flavorings.
