Just did some teak louvre doors on my boat that had several coats of paint applied by previous owners. Started with a heat gun and scraper, then sanded with a Fein multimaster as close as I could in the corners, next used a puddy knife with sandpaper glued to one side to slide in between louvres, also sharpened a screw driver on a grinding wheel so I could get into tight corners, and finally, glued grit to a small drill bit and used it like a dremel to remove the rest of the paint in the real hard areas. Then a days worth of hand sanding with small and folded strips of sandpaper for the final prep before applying teak oil. Over the counter strippers did very little to remove the paint. Might have been better off taking the doors completely apart, sanding each slat, and rebuilding the doors. See you in Key West Jan - Mar!

We were super excited to get the Marquis back to its slip so the owners could come back to enjoy their vacation. We focused on the repairs that needed to be done while it was out of the water.
We aren't quite done with the sailboats wood restoration but we are getting there just finishing up the doors this week so we can put it back together. This was a big job each piece has 7 coats of varnish! Have you ever varnished a boat?

Stripper not sanding is best. Get the citrus based gel stripper. Use plenty of stripper. After stripping use teak cleaner then and only then lightly sand to remove teak fuz. Like 400grit. Then start building layers. Seven or eight will last at least a year in the crazy Keys sun.

We couldn’t find anyone in our area to do that … so we compromised!

Uncle Sam outlawed all the good strippers. Modern “eco friendly” strippers are barely worthy of the name.

They really aren’t strippers …. Not worth the money barely took off anything.

Enjoying the channel but I come away from having watched dozens, thinking boat ownership is crazy expensive. It would be interesting to know what percentage of your bills are 3 figures, 4 figures, and 5 figures plus. I am guessing the vast majority are 4 figures with only a very small percentage being 3 figures. If a person does not have massive DIY skills he better be a millionaire.

Agree with all your comments! It could be 5 figures over time or in a month depending on what we are doing and the cost of parts.

I would have designed no ones or just pull them to the stripping and wasting your time
