HOW TO KNIT THE FLAX SWEATER PART 1

  • This is probably the most popular(for a good reason) FREE knitted sweater pattern that is available in all sizes and is written in different weights of yarn. It also is a great foundation pattern if you want to add cables or different stitches to make designs. I've seen so many ways knitters have used this pattern and it's all awesome! The sky is the limit and I love seeing everyone's unique creations. There are definitely some very talented people out there and it's so inspiring to me.
    Because this sweater comes in LOTS of different sizes, please please, do NOT forget to follow along with me with the written pattern. If you don't, it will be confusing since I am making one particular size. It would be way too hard to add all the info of each size and I don't want to give away the pattern without you having to download and support the designer.

    This is awesome! Thank you so much. I'm a relative newbie and am not skilled at reading patterns yet. Even though it's supposed to be for newish knitters, the written pattern was still overwhelming. Your tutorial really helped clarify things. I'm feeling hopeful that I can actually do this!

    @iKNITS Please Help! I was going along great - very helpful explanations, then at 12:33 the video skips from Set-up Round 2 to a big chunk of the yoke completed. After Set-Up Round 2 the pattern just says "The garter stitch sleeve panel is now established...Continue to work the centre 10 (11, 12,.....) sts on the sleeves in garter stitch... Round 1..." How many rounds does "continue to work the centre" mean? Or do I go straight to Round 1 after I do the Set-up Round 2 twice? But then the video doesn't start with Round 1 until 14:00. I'm so confused!

      @@yolandachavez5930 I think I figured it out. So you ARE supposed to go straight from Set Up Round 2 (twice) to Round 1. In the video she doesn't show this transition, but she does a bunch of Rounds 1-2, then starts the video again (14:00) when she has a couple of Rounds 1-2 to go. Then she works even (off video) and starts Part 2 of the video at Separating Body and Sleeves. Hope that helps!

    When do you use each length of circular? It looks like you stated on the smaller. But then after you increase it looks like you switch to the longer one. And when you switched to the 8 needles you said that you had them on the smaller cable? After casting on it seems like the 32's are too long to start the yoke with bc the stitches dont go all the way around.

    • @iKNITS
      @iKNITS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If I remember correctly, I started with the smaller size cable to do the collar, and then after I increased I switched to my larger cable and needle size. I believe it says when to switch in the pattern. And I used my smaller size cable for the sleeves.

    Please tell me what I did wrong. I followed you stitch for stitch, got to 17.15 and notice your purls are still only 15 across, and there are knit stitches on either side. Where did you mention that? Also you went from detailed to skipping to this width. I know you mentioned to follow the pattern as well, but for knitters like me who are visual that is a lot of room for error. Do you suggest unraveling and begin again or should I just knit the entire sleeve in purl?

    I need confirmation from 11:11 where all the markers are placed. The marker beginning the rounds is just before the 14 purls for the sleeve garter stitch. Did you or anyone ever get an answer to this? Garter stitch is at the beginning of round, so if I do what's written for round 1 setup (kfb, knit to 2 sts before raglan marker, kfb, k1, SM) won't that just be increasing the sleeve garter stitch area? Is it just implied that we never increase the garter stitch, do it normally, and start round 1 setup after them?

      @@tamieneal2343 - I think I got it. I did the following: I placed my markers to show where the increases will be made. I slipped my BOR marker to the right hand needle, KFB, K to 2 sts before the next marker, KFB, K1, slip marker, KFB., K to last 2 sts....repeat until you come back around to the BOR marker.
      Essentially, you're doing a KFB on either side of the increase markers.

    Super newbie here. You never mention when you switch to the longer cable, and I’m trying to figure that out. You mention switching to larger needle size with small cable after the collar ... but then don’t mention when you start also using the long cable. Do you know when that would be? Thank you!!

      Hey 👋 I can't remember if it's mentioned in the pattern where to change, but I believe I switched pretty close to when I was increased after the yoke. Once your smaller cable starts to be too crowded, do it then 🙂

      FYI.... In many patterns out there, whether they be sweaters, cowls or hats, if there are 2 needle sizes needed in the pattern, it's usually necessary to use the smaller of the two on the ribbing alone. The larger size is mainly used for the body of the project. Collars, sleeve cuffs and bottom of top down sweaters usually require the smaller size on the ribbing.

Please can you better explain Set-up round 1. How do I place markers so my garter panel stays the same number of stitches e.g 10,11,12,13,14 etc. I would really appreciate an answer as I think a lot of people will benefit and will not go through what I have.

    • @iKNITS
      @iKNITS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. It has been a while since I've made this so bear with me as I refresh my memory. In my opinion, I wouldn't try placing the garter panel stitches until set up round 2. In the written pattern, this row is written easier to be able to see where the garter panel is and it'll be easier to place those then. But make sure you use different markers so you can easily identify that these markers are not the ones that you increase on. Let me know if you have any more questions.

    • @iKNITS
      @iKNITS  ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, if I may stand up for myself since you decided to blame me as to why you are struggling to follow the pattern... I went back and watched my video along with reading the pattern to make sure that I showed how to do that row correctly, and I did. If you keep watching, I express my frustration how I was pulling my hair out and having trouble with the pattern as well. It wasn't until I started to mark my garter panel that it became so much easier. I'm sorry you are having a hard time with the increase rows. It's difficult. But I hope it will get easier after you mark the garter panel.

    You can't stand being corrected so you delete a valuable comment from someone trying to learn? Everyone gets things wrong sometimes. A mature person would admit it and move on. I see no other reason for my replies to be suddenly removed.

I can't tell you how disappointed I am that this is the way you've chosen to handle things. You are placing yourself as a figure of authority. @@kscott2655 I am sorry that you are disappointed. Let me try to explain so that maybe you can understand where I am coming from. When you left your comment, you insinuated that I was giving out false information and saying that's not cool. You're assuming that I knew so I must be perpetuating false information. You could've said, "I'm not sure if you know this, but you can actually make a swatch in the round if you are making something in the round. It makes your gauge a lot more accurate." Because I didn't know that, my intentions were not to lead anyone astray. That is not my purpose at all. Also, I have never said that I am an expert. I love knitting and I love teaching so I am doing the best that I can with the knowledge I have and I am so grateful for a community that helps and encourages one another and not tears anyone down. I saw your first response and was like, ok sounds good. Because I have already talked with this lady with the question over a year ago, and because of you I found out that you can actually make a swatch in the round, we talked about it, I didn't think it needed to go any further and I did not want others to think that I was giving out false information on purpose like you suggested.

    I've seen others asking a similar question but have yet to see an answer and I really don't want to screw up. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help
    Edit: Oh shit, I think just typing it out helped me figure it out. For the round 1 setup you DO increase in the garter area, but you're knitting that round instead of purling and making an extra stitch before and after the garter area. So when you get to round 2 setup, THATS when you place the garter area markers and only purl the garter stitches. After those first two setup rounds the garter area will be separated and you can KFB without messing with the garter stitches. I think. I had no idea knitting was this confusing lol
