    Hello, this video was so helpful, today I bought a late 1950s Olympia typewriter from a garage sale and I had no idea how to use it until i googled and found this video. I cant wait to write stories with it! Thank you!!

    Tabs, of course, let you align in columns. Setting these up was usually a chapter in the typing class. And, to center the title, you count the letters and spaces. Start at the middle of your page and backspace back half of your number. Probably obvious but trying to be helpful for beginners.

    9:10 Some typewriters have their number symbols in upper row. It seems to be language layout related. For French, Cyrillic and most Czech layouts you would need to use Shift in order to type a numeric character.

    Thank you so very much for all your wonderful information. I just happened upon your channel and remembered that I had a 1956 Royal Quiet de Luxe in my closet. Because of your information I am happily typing away. Last week I bought a 1956 Smith Corona Silent Super from a friend. He is in immaculate condition. Had to do a little cleaning with a compressor, Simple Green and qtips. Had all the papers, receipts from the first purchase. She had no idea where it came from. Looks like it has hardly been used at all. Types like a dream. They both do.

    Thanks, Sarah, For this good, basic introduction for novices and beginners alike.
    A couple of points: The margin release button can also be marked with a baffling four dots. Apart from not having a dedicated 1 key, I have models without a zero, necessitating the use of a capital O. The line advance is often not two lines in accordance with the marked notation but one and a half, meaning that 3 is actually double line spacing which can be confusing. You made no mention of a paper support (although, I appreciate that not all machines have this feature). Carriage locks are located in all different, sometimes obscure, positions. How many people have I met who think their machine is broken or jammed because they are not aware of this feature!

      Carriage locks are always hiding for sure. I appreciate your feedback!

    This was entirely life saving thank you so much. My Smith-Corona Silent was tweakingggg today after replacing the ribbon and I needed to take it back to the basics before thinking it was mayhaps broken. Of course I still want to take it in to a service guy in Bremerton to get her cleaned up (its been a while) and see if there are any other issues to fix. Thank you so much for reminding me about the ribbon shifter on the Smith-Coronas.

    Okay this was really useful! A lot of typewriter content and information online kind of assumes you already have a few years experience. Im buying a 1939 Remington No 17 soon, my first typewriter, and even after having read the instruction manual I was left with more questions than answers. I will for sure be back to this video a few times in the coming weeks

    Hi Sarah! Just inherited my first typewriter, a Royal Safari from 1967 in Regimental Red. I am an anatomy professor and this video really hits for me! Would be so cool to learn about how typewriters were used in academia and in anatomy education & research.

      @@JustMyTypewriter I heard you say you are writing a dissertation. That would be painful on a typewriter for some reasons. I am writing initial drafts of a research paper on this typewriter right now as it is supposed to be a different method of writing. What's your experience writing in academia? Isn't it distracting to try and think and type on a computer only to see red and green underlined words all over the place?!?!

      @JustMyTypewriter  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikePascoePhD Thank goodness I finished it in the summer! I do find it distracting to be confronted with editing information as I'm trying to get my ideas out on paper. I have not gone full typewriter on research papers yet- I do value being able to quickly edit digitally!

    This video was so informative thank you, I'm looking to buy a typewriter soon and this helped me learn a lot more about them
    Question; are there typewrites with , [, ] keys? if not are there any replacements for them?

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That depends on the machine and the age. They do have ()- some of the others may be on electric machines from a later period

    for some type writers that dont have a tab button, is it true the margin release button can function like a tab? and also for striking through a word, like crossing it out, can you use the dash key over it? thank you very much for the video

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The margin release does not work like a tab key, but you can use the space bar to help!
      for strike thru you can use dashes or xs

    And can you use correction fluid to clean mistakes too?

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      White out can be used to go over typing mistakes. It will flake off your paper after it dries and that can add gunk to the segments of your typewriter

  • @IhediwaUkachi-rs5xl

    What if your typewriter has no number to show which line spacing you wanna type

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some times they have dots or little lines to indicate the spacing! Some machines also only have single or double space because they were manufactured to be a lighter model
