Second Story: a child should NEVER have to be beholden to a parent just because they birthed them. MIL needs to understand her son is an adult now with his own family that he needs to prioritize over her. Had similar issues with my own mother when i started living with my wife, she was used to my siblings and I dropping everything we were doing to do what she asked of us. The one time I said no to her request and pushed back when she pushed the issue it turned into a huge fight and we didn't talk for almost 6 months. after that she understood, she's no longer on the top of my priority list and can understand that my wife and children come before anyone else. OP's husband needs to man up and deal with his mother, it never should have gotten to that point because HE should have shut it down after the first time his wife made it clear to him this was making her uncomfortable.

    • @my_pan_self8045
      @my_pan_self8045 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Tbh, i think OP's husband must have gotten some sort of manipulation from his mom to make him put off talking to her about this for THIS LONG
Not teaching him how to iron? Not teaching him how to wash his clothes?
MIL definately made sure he grew up to be as dependant on her as possible, and now thats affecting his adult life.
Both he and his wife need to step away from MIL, and MIL needs to back tf away from them

Christ that first story is giving me hives from my own memories with my mom. Mobility issues, entitled attitude, the need to be the center of attention - there’s a very good reason I refuse to travel with her anymore. I’m her daughter, not a therapist, servant, caretaker, maid, hired muscle or the person responsible for her own happiness and comfort. I wish I had realized this back when I was younger. I would have saved myself so much pain.

1: The mom and aunt are unreasonable along with any family that sides with them. For their own sakes, OP and immediate family just need to bite the bullet and let them go.
2: The MIL is toxic and OP needs to talk to her husband about distancing. And just doing more for himself. If not, OP needs to leave him and decide childcare from there.
4: The mom has issues and is controlling AT LEAST to OP. Possibly the husband too and depending on how that went, even the former husband. I took years to begin to learn this myself: you're not responsible for your family's (bad) behavior. Kids and spouses aren't puppets.

For story 2, boundaries need to be set with the MIL, but not by the OP. The OP needs to get her husband on the same page with her, and it is the HUSBAND that needs to set his mom straight. If the OP confronts her MIL, she either won't listen or will forever see the OP as a horrible lady that stole her son, even if the husband is on his wife's side. It sounds like the husband has issues letting go too, so going it alone like that could damage the marriage if he thinks his wife is being overbearing.

I'd probably gone a slight different passive aggressive route. Put door locks on all the interior doors. Lock the spare bedrooms she doesn't need access to. And when she comes up with some excuse as to why she needs in there, then you say you could have just called and I could have told you where that thing was. She would probably take it one step further and talk about needing female products that would be in the master bathroom, to which you respond you are out and then you make it a point to come home with more of that product.
it is a bit annoying locking your rooms, but at the end of the day it does give a peace of mind.

There's a thing called cutting someone off at the knees. You know how every work group has an annoying hanger on? I sponsored a birthday party for one of the group and made sure to fill the table with all haste. When the pest said she couldn't wait to go I told her that the table was full and I couldn't accommodate any more guests. She said she would sit at the next table with some of the people from the full table. I explained this was banquet seating and every chair had to be filled. It finally sunk in that she wasn't invited and couldn't crash. The look on her face was priceless. She had the grace not to turn up and she was down at the mouth for a few weeks. I felt the glare of death quite a few times but after that she avoided me and my social arrangements. How sweet it is.

It is an important moment for them and they(Aunt and Mother) are ruining their special moment. Yes, the approach of the OP is not the best thing that you can do in that situation, but you can't blame them. Kind of ironic that this video popped up in my feed since I was just told that this girl is apparently coming with me and another group of friends to watch Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. No one invited her, she invited herself after finding out she’ll be missing a whole outing with friends. She doesn’t even like Marvel but I guess she just can’t miss being part of everything. I hate people who invite themselves to trips just because they’re so nosy and insecure without gossip.

Story 4: Idon't think the mom was too out of line, I do think she shouldn't have freaked out in front of her child though. I also, don't think she should have freaked out on her husband as it has been years. But I do think it is something kind of resonable to be mad about and talk and work through. He knew she had these rules for their kids and that they were important to her, yet he didn't tell her. He also knew that she expected them to have an honest relationship, so I could see being hurt about his dishonesty. I don't think it should completely ruin there relationship or anything, but I can totally understand her being hurt by it.

I call BS on the first story. Your going to drive to Florida then just jump over to Arizona! $4000 for 4 plane tickets at the height of Covid? You don’t have to fly first class. And how can you afford hotels for this circumnavigation of the United States if you can’t afford the plane tickets?
And what hotel in Orlando is an hour away from the Orlando airport?
It’s not anymore expensive for 1 person to take an Uber than for 4.

I have a similar story. So my uncle passed away in February and left a huge chunk of money to his son, sisters and brother, my dad. Back in April, my dad comes to me and says that he wants me and my daughters to have a vacation, anywhere we want to go and he'd pay for it. Awesome! Hawaii, here I come! Now, knew that one person would be upset that I was going on vacation. My boss, who is also a childhood friend, asked me 4 years ago to help her with her mom, as in home care was getting expensive. So I've been doing this basically since covid, we have a routine and it works. Except for the fact that she has no backup help in case something happens to me or her. I sat on this news about my vacation for 3 days, because I didn't want to text it to her, I wanted to tell her in person. So I get to her house the night before my 4 day shift, and I let her know about my trip. Mind you, I'm not planning to go until next March. So she has 10 months to prepare and get someone to help her while I'm gone. So plenty of advanced warning. She lost her shit! It's so unfair! What about meeee???? Seriously? I suggested her cousin come up since she's helped us before. She called her the next day, but would have to get back to us with her schedule, as she has 2 kids, and like 15 huskies. About a week and a half go by with no word from her cousin, and finally gets back to us. Originally, I had wanted to go in February, but wasn't sure about the weather, so I moved it to March. Cousin asks if I can move it to the end of March or into April. Nope! Sorry! The whole point of going in February or early March is it's whale season! Then she says she could only come for 3 days. Now before we found this out, my boss/friend says to me, maybe we can get cousin to stay the whole time and I can come with you! My heart went into my throat out of sheer panic. It's MY vacation, not yours! I didn't say anything, just let it go. Then she has the gall to say to me, the one person who I thought would never go on vacation, is going on vacation. RUDE! She acts like I can't go on vacation without her or it's somehow unfair. Sorry you don't have a dead uncle that left his family a nice stipend... am I supposed to say no thanks, because friend has feelings? Fuck her feelings! I'm going to Hawaii! She is one of those people who gets super upset when her order from Doordarsh is wrong. She's a Karen. Any inconvenience in her life, and it's somebody else's fault. Makes me not want to buy her anything from Hawaii. Why? Attitude like that doesn't deserve anything. I'm almost thinking of not coming back to work after my trip, because I don't want to spend 10 days in paradise, only to have to come back to this shit. She acts like it's my responsibility to find care for her mother. Nope! Anywho, she convinced her brother to come help her as he should, but he'll only be here for 3 days. So no vacation for her! Not my problem. I just work here. I have 272 days to save up and purchase items for my trip. Then I'm a peace out!😂

I'll never understand how people can just let other people, REGARDLESS OF RELATIONSHIP, bring down the quality of their life and force themselves onto them. Once you're married, your allegiance and first priority is YOUR family. Not your parents, not your siblings, not your friends. YOUR family. And anyone who doesn't respect that is NOT your friend/family.
And then those bums didn't even leave a tip?!? Smh.

I’d maybe wake up everyone else earlier and than what we told the other two. If they complained that I left them I would maybe gaslight them and say we told them the right thing and gave them a warning of when we were leaving or say we know they were tired from the vacation and wanted to let them sleep in more. I would also maybe say we are going to universal when really we are going to Disney and we take the Disney travel option. Maybe saw we took an Uber there and wanted then to have the car.
