      Lately something that got in my way of happiness has been working hard every day making high quality art commissions and having my client not appreciate the time and effort I put into it. Getting paid too little for it. It made me want to quit. So I am rebranding to find customers who appreciate the quality instead of fussing over the cost x) cross your fingers it’ll work. Even if I’m just starting out with the process it already feels better. Working in a way where I feel respected and appreciated.. thanks Marc for sharing this! I am on the path ✨🥳

    One piece of advice:
    Sometimes the problem may go beyond just having good encouraging methods, if you are unable to do the things you enjoy despite trying this advice, you should consider the possibility of being actually depressed, the lack of enjoyment in the things you love is called "anhedonia" and is 1 of 3 defining criteria for depression.
    Depression can have both a psychological or organic background.
    So, guys just remember, if nothing seems to motivate you, its probably not your fault, just call your doctor or psychologist and get evaluated...

    A tip, you need lots of these to counter different traps: If you can't stay consistent (discounting no time/resources), it's probably because you don't see positive results for your efforts.
    To counter that, try adding an immediate reward AFTER drawing. To become one of those guys that draws 24/7 you MUST have some immediate gratification - this is the ingredient to addiction lmao.
    That's why people that are already ripped say they "love the gym". No one would if they never saw results and were just causing pain to themselves. To transition from a fat guy to a ripped dude is the hardest part, which is mostly done by tryharding.
    Another way to prevent frustration is to tune your expectations vs efforts, but I haven't found any success there.

    • @umberumbreon9190
      @umberumbreon9190 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know his comment is 2 years old, but hey, it doesn't hurt to comment. I started drawing everyday this month and I'll continue for a few years because it's what I truly want. It's been 2 weeks and after a few days of stressing, a few friends have told me to calm down and they made me realize exactly what your comment states. It's that I don't get that instant reward when I'm done drawing or practicing. With math, it's getting the answer right after a long equation, with reading a book, it's finishing a chapter or maybe even being done with the book, watching a youtube video till the end. What is the equivalent to this in art? I've been mentally drained the past few days and I've slowly gotten better at practicing but I would surely love it more if I could unlock the secrets to that gratification after being done.

    • @kecho4125
      @kecho4125 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@umberumbreon9190
      The reward is exactly what u think it is - a drawing you can look at and like it just as much as others' works. Now when ur bad and cant produce good art, there are some ways to force it:
      - focus on studies first so you don't spend 3 hours just on sketching an eye. Proficiency = fun. At one point ur skill will surpass your expectations and it will then be fun.
      - have some time for casual/ for fun art - draw what you WANT. If its too hard, try just studies of the stuff u want to draw or try simpler styles you can kinda do.
      - it takes at least a year (cuz you dont have the perfect system of studying) to kinda start to like drawing (3 for me lmao) (some are lucky and are safisfied drawing stickmen too)
      - deliberate practice for 3hrs max, no need for 8hrs.

Then I draw them as a character of choosen prompt. I feel my skill is not good enough to earn money for myself, but below every art I paste account number of local animal shelter, and if drawned person is happy with my work, he/she may pay any amount of support for those dogs and cats. And it's additional motivation - if I'm lazy, no money for poor pets.

    • @Cry_Neon6250
      @Cry_Neon6250 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      My tip is to just start really observing how body parts look in different positions.
      For me my anatomy skills didn't start kicking off until I started observing my family members and just people around me, for example, how their leg looked like when they are sitting.
      It's great because it's a passive thing you can do because I'll admit, I don't draw as much as I should but observing and retaining information made it so I got better at anatomy even though I wasn't drawing a lot.
      I hope that helps, and keep working at it you'll get better I believe in you:)

    • @Amirul9339

      @@ghostlyyin another tip as a follow up, when ur trying to study anatomy, don't learn all at once, it'll make your learning clutter. For example, ur learning hands, just focus on hands. From observing, breaking it down to parts, studying the form of a hand so u can draw it in perspective. Just like a book, chapter by chapter. Don't take in too fast or too slow or you'll never learn anything.
      Gesture drawing in other hand is essential to understand a human body, it's related to learning anatomy but in this case you're focusing the movement of a body in perspective and it's very practical. You don't need to do it everyday but at least train once a week for gesture drawing.
      If you feel it's hard to even draw anything and it's hindering your studies, draw straight lines and shapes. Always take time to draw them. It'll help to grow you to draw lines confidently. When drawing shapes, always find the centre line because it improves your understanding of form and perspective. Line confidence is important because it improves the quality of your learning since you can draw the detail the way you intended. Hairy lines? You're in for a long time. Unless you have good understanding of fundamentals, learning anything without basics won't get you anywhere. It's like reading with little to no understand on how to read alphabets. So start slowly, then expand.
      Lastly but most importantly, always use references to study. Then test yourself how much have you learnt by drawing a new artwork then compare it to your last artwork. From there, you can analyze what have you accomplish. Always criticize yourself. Not self-loathing yourself. They are 2 different things.
      Hope you have an enjoyable journey, dear young artist! take care.

    The part where you mentioned if you can only dedicate 2 min out of the day was very encouraging. I’m currently 30, have had a passion/interest in drawing but never stuck with it or even knew where to start. I’m currently almost two years into my self taught learning and really only have time during my lunch breaks since I work full time. I was just beating myself up for wishing I had more time to practice and learn. Now, I don't have that time anymore, but still I draw 30 minutes on subway, then on lunch I draw 1 hour (I do observational drawing since I go and eat outside, or I simply draw my co-workers). At 5 when I finish, I draw again for 30 minutes in the subway. I arrive home at 6, have dinner etc and I STILL study or simply draw for at least 3 hours, and at 11pm I go sleep. Hey there, we can't always choose our jobs. And they can be stressful. But if you are in a situation that drains your energy away from things, that you want to enjoy, I think the question is not how to do art but rather how to improve / change your life regarding your qualification or the job itself. :-) Don't worry about being an artist. For most of us, it's a nice hobby - and sorry: nothing more.
      And if you like your job and it pays well: It's okay to suck at art. Relax. You don't need to be a swiss army knife. The older you get, the least time you have.
      Prioritise and enjoy the few things fully. :-)
      Took me a bit longer until I acknowledged that for myself. (:

      A few days ago I watched a video about meditation for artists where a guy talked about just drawing lines and shapes without thinking and without the goal of creating a masterpiece. He said that it could help people relax while drawing. I tried it myself and it really worked. I drew without thinking and i only used lines and circles and it was really relaxing and fun. The final drawing looks crazy and even though the result doesn't matter, since it's all about the meditation, I really like the look of it. AND your hand still gets some practice.
      Maybe you can give this method of relaxing while drawing a try. Hope it'll help you.

    I am eager to draw more and more and I am even planning to make my own YT channel!
    Thank you so much, you are the best!!!

    I remember just how much progress I was able to do and how quickly I improved when I was part of a small group of other artists. Learning together, doing small events, exchanging art, "chatting" by doing various comics about each other. Or just sitting in a screen share call, being able to chat and see what everyone is working on.
    Sadly everyone moved on, and the difference now is night and day. Im only able to create maybe 1 or 2 drawings at best, where before I felt motivated to make many times over that amount, with better detail.
    Its sadly not always that simple to find new people to progress together with.

    I wasn’t going to watch this video but I’m sitting at work and need some decent bg noise so I turned it on. I royally don’t regret it. You’ve hit on a lot of things that I’ve struggled with so much through the years that forcing myself to sit down for art has turned into a chore and lost the enjoyment. I barely ever do it though I know I want to. Thank you! I couldn’t find a patreon or anything but I would’ve totally paid for this video. If I’m just missing it somehow lmk, and I’ll get to it ASAP. Thank you so much!

    The easy mode tip is great. However, the thing that always makes art harder is that it's really rough on your body. Neck pains, wrist pains, arm pains, back pains, hell even jaw pains. And headaches. There's always resistance towards drawing because drawing means pain.
    By the way, I downloaded your brushes and they finally gave me ideas as to how I can make one that'll feel natural to me. So thank you a lot for that. I've been struggling to make a proper brush.

    That 5th tip is the real thing. Worked like a charm for me when I first came across it years ago. Even if I dont do anything from tips 1 to 4... 8 out of 10 times I end up drawing something if the sketchbook/tools are just easily accessible

    I finally got my first digital tablet after being a traditional artist for almost 20 years and I just have to say, I absolutely love your channel. Your advice about keeping cheap notebooks around the house is a GAME CHANGER!!!!! I used to only buy expensive Moleskines and I could never bring myself to draw in them for the same reasons you mentioned! Now I just go to the dollar store and grab a few cheap $1 notepads and I am on my way! Thank you so much for all of your tips and tricks. I really appreciate you!

      Pd: no pasa nada tomate tu tiempo.
      Me encantan los videos de Marc,no se mucho ingles pero hago el esfuerzo para entender todo y si,la idea de dibujar es estudiar pero mas lo es pasarlo bien y divertirse,a mi me encanta copiar dibujos o estilos,de juegos,anime,manga,series etc etc me gusta muchisimo,he aprendido a controlar el trazo asi,copiando mucho y entendiendo composicion y sombras.

I just practicing studying how to draw heads and eyes in particular angles and was feeling very frustrated and like I wasn't making the progress I thought I was previously. This video really helped put things into perspective and remind me that getting frustrated would only hinder my growth and that I do art to have fun and should enjoy the journey of practicing skills more rather than rushing it and eventually getting burnt out.

  • @MichaelBallard0893
    @MichaelBallard0893 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It took me many years of the 15 years I’ve been drawing to figure out what I wanted out of my art. The beginning was all about improving and learning to be the best I could be. My main focus for YEARS was to have a career in art in some form. A couple of years ago I started my design studio as a means to make money; I wanted it to become my full time job. I obsessed over it, only drawing what I thought would make me money or only drawing what would gain me followers and likes. I didn’t draw what I wanted to draw and I hated it. It started to make drawing feel like a chore. I didn’t want to draw but I kept doing it for the fear of losing what I’ve been working for. Art is my life, an outlet from reality and something I’m really good at. Finally, last year I re-evaluated my priorities with art and realized that I don’t want a career in art. I don’t want to feel like something so important to me has to become work. Since that realization, I now draw only for me. Not for money, or a following, but because I love it so much. My art has improved even more as well as the frequency. I draw what I enjoy 100% of the time. I do still have an Instagram and I do still post my art, but I don’t obsess over how many likes or exposure I get off of that art. I fell in love with my craft again and all it took was fully understanding what I wanted from my art work. Simply put, I do art because of my love for my art and because of the joy it brings myself. Nothing more.

    Good video Marc, always on point and easy to understand.
    I'm my opinion the easy mode is the most important factor, who you are and what limit you to progress, sometimes is your own problem affecting you to finding happiness like procrastination, sometimes is outside factors that make you miserable and make you lose motivation.
    Is important to self reflect to find a way to the problems that limit your progress to happiness.
    As always wonderull video!

    Aw, man. I really needed to hear all of this. I've been struggling with my art for a while now but, mostly, I've been struggling a lot with my motivation to create. I'm more of a hobbyist when it comes to art as I don't plan on making a living out of it, so I don't really have like a long term plan other than just improving my skills as I go, if that counts? Which is a very slow process since I'm slow at making actual significant progress most of the time, partly because I don't do art everyday. I'm also a fan-artist (meaning that technically a 100% of my art is fanart) so my other potential motivation would be to continue creating contents for that part of the fandom I'm part of, because I really like creating for those characters I normally draw and sharing that with other fans, especially since that part of the fandom I'm in is not 'as popular' in comparison to others. The 'problem' with this is that my works never really get much attention, not even those that I spent days working on, so that kind of takes a toll on my motivation at the end of the day. Kinda like "no point in getting a new piece out if only a few folks are going to even look at it", so I feel no real motivation to spend 6+ hours on a piece when I can already see the final picture in my head, looking exactly how I want it to look like, and also knowing that, with my current art level, I probably wouldn't be able to achieve that result anyway. All this paired up with some other personal stuff (and what I feel could be undiagnosed dysthymia). Kind of a vicious circle in the end, I guess 😩 I still intend to put all the advice in the video in practice, though! Hopefully it will help me out of this funky loop I'm in.
