Beautiful woman but the constant nagging with that seriously irritating voice made it a more enjoyable film when she wasn't on screen. If Liz Taylor acted anything like that with men in real life which she probably did considering the eight different marriages I feel sorry for the men that had to listen to that voice its unbearable.

    A Brilliantly Curated Film!
“Mendacity! Mendacity, you won't...you won't live with mendacity but you're an expert at it”
What a brilliant performance. There’s just so many things that i would like to expand on. Firstly, lets talk about the plot. Its definitely a family based melodrama. It portrays rather accurately the relationship between a father and the crown prince son. The king of the house, goes by the name Big Daddy, is a father with 2 sons, the first born, having his eyes set only on the fortune of his father and the other, Brick (Paul Newman) having no interest in it at all and was going through his own personal issues.
This drama beautifully digs into relationships, sexuality, marriage, family, and basically the human psyche. What i love about it is how the film depicts feelings. Feelings of yearning , utter love of a wife towards husband. We see Maggie’s ( Elizabeth Taylor) love visualized in her eyes, her tone, her body language. Her character easily resonates with me. Simply Beautiful. We see how Brick is battling with his own feelings, confused of his sexuality that leads to a few self destruction episodes. Desiring Maggie but also at the same time, guilt tripping her. Then also we see how frustrated Big Mama is when her love is not being appreciated by her husband. We see feelings of remorse of Big D towards his grandchildren. We also see how the human psyche works when great deal of money is in the picture. How family members changed to suit their own hidden agenda. And the list goes on and on.
My favourite thing about the film, one that makes it stand out from the others is the originality of the script. What an amazing, wittingly, highly intelligent written script. Some of the dialogues are the ones that gonna linger in our minds for a very long time. “Heroes in the real world live twenty-four hours a day, not just two hours in a game” and “I'm not living with you. We occupy the same cage, thats all!”
Performance is top notch. Elizabeth Taylor , Paul Newman, Judith Anderson are just amazing! But Burl Ives, he nailed it. His charisma, his aura simply outshines every other cast in the film. The way he made the character so alive, tht man is really talented.

Paul Newman gave an excellent performance in this film. But, I can’t help but wonder how James Dean would have done in the role of Brick. Paul Newman’s big break was in, “Somebody Up There Likes Me.” It was a role that James Dean was set to play before his untimely death. Paul Newman also auditioned for the role of Cal in, “East Of Eden.” The part went to James Dean and he gave an excellent performance. I believe Newman may have also auditioned for one of the other roles for which James Dean was cast. I guess one could only speculate where Dean’s short but stellar movie career would have gone had he lived longer. He (Dean) and Elizabeth Tayler were very, good friends. 1958 was the year that Paul Newman left his wife and kids to marry Joanne Woodward. Filming began on March 12, 1958. Elizabeth Taylor came down with a virus on March 19th and was temporarily unable to continue filming. Ironically, had she not been ill, she would have accompanied her then husband, Mike Todd to New York for an award ceremony given in his honor. On March 22, 1958, the plane carrying Mike Todd to New York crashed killing all on board. Elizabeth Taylor would have been among the fatalities had fate not intervened. Taylor was understandably devastated over her husband’s death. She did not return to the set until April 14, 1958, noticeably thinner and more pale.

Dean would have been miscast next to Taylor. He was not tall.

According to those who might know, the filming of this one was the real tragedy. First they wanted to do it in black and white. The studio said : We have the 4 most beautiful eyes in the world. Not gonna happen. So they had to change everything to colour. Then Mike Todd, Taylors big love, died in a accident. Taylor went mental, but had to make the movie because it was in her contract. At one time she had to "throw a bottle"at Paul Newman, and she accidently hid him straight in the face. Then he got mad and said he would never work with Taylor again. O well, in the end, they are the most beautiful couple ever. As long as she keeps her mouth shut. She's like David Beckham. Everything is gorgeous, except for their voices.
