  • The Baltimore Orioles are right in thick of the American League Wild Card race. But how do they compare to the other teams in the race? Host Connor Newcomb dives into the stats to compare the Orioles to the Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays, Seattle Mariners, and the other teams in contention for the AL Wild Card spots.
But first, Connor recaps the Orioles 6-5 victory over the Blue Jays and gives you the five things you need to know from the win, including Rougned Odor's wild day at the ballpark, Kyle Bradish' solid outing, and Ryan Mountcastle continuing to crush Toronto.

Odor is of more importance to the team than you give him credit, Connor. He was also in the middle of two double plays turned by the club last night, and Hyder says he's the best for turning them that he's ever seen among second basemen.
Rougned may have preserved Bautista's save on Monday with his intervention on the mound, preventing a meltdown. And this goes to Rougie's overall presence as a tough veteran adds to the Orioles' grittiness.
As for callups of Stowers & Henderson, that's the sort of thing that usually doesn't happen until September, though there's certainly nothing "usual" about this season. Unless Phillips totally comes completely apart at the plate, which he hasn't come close to doing with the O's yet (two doubles and a near homer in 11 ABs as a Bird), as he's seen as a platoon with McKenna. That's not to say he's a lock to be there a month from now, but if he can hit at least a little bit, his speed and GG caliber defense should keep him around (Stowers isn't his equal in the latter two categories, and wasn't impressive offensively when the O's called him up for a cup of coffee earlier in the year).
Whatever negative one may say about Phillips limitations as a player, he's a Trey Mancini-level good guy and I challenge anyone to argue otherwise: www.cbsnews.com/news/tampa-bay-rays-brett-phillips-chloe-grimes-cancer/#:~:text=CBS%20Evening%20News-,Tampa%20Bay%20Rays'%20Brett%20Phillips%20credits%20hardest%2Dhit%20home%20run,to%20young%20fan%20battling%20cancer&text=St.,since%20the%20age%20of%202.

Odor is a great veteran to have. Couldn’t ask anymore of him. He’s got a clutch bat and gold glove

Odor is#1. Ridiculously clutch inthe field and at the plate. Tremendously inspiring body language and clubhouse leader. Got SOUL Bro. Trashes metrics stats and even intangibles. It's your attitude towards the man that is Immaterial. He sacrifices himself and the team feeds on him making them Veritably SCARY. Listen to Hyder. Others that don't get enough credit from your likes are 1) Anthony Santander... as in nine fouls to beat down the starter followed by the CRUSHING HOME RUN
      2) Ramon Urias. One Cannot Say Enough About this guy. And his Smile contends with our Mascot's. 3) Mateo is on FIRE.. 4) I also like what I see out of Ryan McKenna. Alot of Spirit and Magic. 6)!!! Cionel Perez is Disgustingly FILTHY AND ALL FIRED UP!!! YOU GOTTA LOVE IT. ALL THESE GUYS AND MORE such as (!) ROBINSON (!) Chirinios are Utterly Indispensable. Market the young talent like we did with the overacheiving Lopez to PAY OUR CORE PLAYERS! RIGHT NOW is the time to take this thing to the TOP! it's not all about your silly stats and projections anymore. It's a SPIRITUAL THING. GET REAL. And get Sanctified. THE WORD IS THE BIRDS!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

My prediction is the Orioles from 2022 to 2030's will be among the great Orioles dynasties, going back to the 1960's to early 1980's. We will have numerous repetitive All-Stars, a couple of Hall of Famers, many playoff games, and a World Series or two...

The butt of jokes has become pain in the butt for other teams. This is a fearless team. I revisited the pre season predictions and laughed my ass off. I think analysts are so jealous, they don't want to talk about this team. Hope they go in post season and eliminate another team.

The analysists are starting to wake up, as I've seen some have started referring to: the Orioles as _contenders!_

I am very impressed with Nick Vespi. I think he is a much needed solid left handed reliever after Lopez was traded. The Orioles best relievers right now are Perez, Tate, Bautista, and Vespi. Baker has the ability to be mentioned, but he has to settle in better and get his command back.
I don't know anything about Head or Sulser. With regards to Joey Krehbiel, his struggles seems to come from the fact he pats the ball in and out of his glove during his wind up. Hitters can see what he's throwing them because he shows it, pats his glove, then throws it. It's a bad habit that's getting him hit. I would like to see him have better success. It's easy to see how much he loves the game and wants to compete. I hope he finds success.

This team is playing with house money and they going to play free with no pressure. Bring up young players to them experience a playoff which should help them next season and the rebuild continues let's go Os.

Starting pitching issues. If the starting pitching struggles you have to go to relief more often. The problem is you are going to wear out that relief pitching eventually. I'm sure there is a formula for how many pitches you ideally want for relievers. Go Birds!

Are they better? Yes. However, don’t get carried away about a playoff spot. Remember, they are only sniffing a playoff spot that has been newly created by a change in the format. BTW, you can’t lose to the lowly Red Sox and be considered a serious contender. The schedule is pretty tough the rest of the way, and the “ noose of pressure” will get tighter and tighter.

The Orioles are 2 games back of the 2nd wild card and and 2.5 games back of the first wild card. They’d be in this race any year, it has nothing to do with the third wild card.

@@ericjohnson8348 Hater? I couldn’t care less about them. I’m an unbiased fan who’s looked at all the remaining schedules of all the wildcard contenders and the Orioles have by FAR the Hardest schedule. It ain’t happening. With the way the schedules are I see it being
      WC1: Mariners
      WC2: Blue Jays
      WC3: Twins
