By 1945 she had amassed 28 Scottish and British records, competing in freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke. The following year, in 1946, Riach became British freestyle champion in the 100 yards, 220 yards and 440 yards. Her life was tragically cut short aged just 20 , Over 10,000 people attended the funeral processions to New Monkland Cemetery.
