  • Former outfielder and 5-time All-Star Torii Hunter said in an interview last week that he had been called racial slurs by Red Sox fans over 100 times in his career. The Red Sox organization came out with a statement yesterday saying that Hunter’s comments are true and racism in Boston is real. The team said they are committed to quote, “using our platform to amplify the many voices who are calling out injustice.” Hear what Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe have to say about the history of racism at Fenway Park.

Pretty much. Boston (Southie especially) has been historically racist. Boston is pretty much carried by Cambridge in everything. Cambridge, MA is right across the river from Boston and it has all the great colleges (Harvard, MIT), big corporations, tech companies, and is very liberal/progressive in comparison.

Just forget about the victim mentality or the privileged mentality and learn to co-exist. Everyone has privileges these days to an extent. And most people have shortcomings. But we're not living in the 1800s anymore so that's good news.

The city of Boston should make a public apology to Jim Rice for the way he was treated when he was with the Red Sox. Growing up there, everybody knew it was dangerous for blacks to go to Fenway to watch a game. But Jim had to be there everyday. The racial vitriol that would be hurled at him by the HOME TOWN fans was sickening and was well-known by everyone. Black folks knew if white fans were doing that to their star player, then a black person, as an ordinary fan, had to brace for anything if they went to Fenway. Needless to say, few blacks attended Red Sox games in those days (1970s), no matter how much they loved the team and the game. In many ways, the Boston region had a split personality. On the one hand, it was one of the most progressive regions in the country, but on the other hand it was as reactionary as any place in the South at that time.

Lived in mass my entire life. Most and least racist state in the union simultaneously. If you live here you know exactly what I mean. You can pretty much guess a persons wealth, ethnicity and religion based entirely on the street they live on.

What do you expect in Boston... I’ve worked and lived in the New England area and I know full well the racial disparities and prejudice towards ANYONE non “white”.

The Red Sox owning the situation is awesome! With the influence that organization has in that city, that is a huge step in the right direction. Great job Boston.

All people are getting called out to the red carpet. This is not only happening in Fenway Park, but Wrigley Field also has a history of doing garbage like this.
PS, shout out to Skip Bayless. He is a BEAST in the little details of sports history.

The MLB broke the color barrier with Jackie Robinson in 1947 with Brooklyn but the Red Sox didn't break the barrier until 1959 with a guy named Pumpskie from Oakland. Lol! Even the Boston Braves broke the color line before the Red Sox. I guess that is why they had to leave town. Smh.

In Chicago, when someone yells out a racial slur to a player its immediately confronted by the surrounding fans which usually leads to the fan leaving the section to sit somewhere else or being ejected from the stadium by security. I'm from Chicago but a Minnesota Twins fan and Minnesota fans are racist not in person but over the internet.
