Def : - Single use plastic (SUP) is a non-biodegradable waste used only once and thrown away falling in different categories based on their application .
    1. Plastic became ubiquitous due to its convenience and cheap availability
    2. SUP prone to litter can be aligned to Swach Bharat Mission (SBM) for effective elimination.Major reason for clogging the sewers.
    3. Defining Thickness ( out of box solutions

Frank is so polite with Dignitaries.. he doesn't stop and gets into the debates himself. Vishal Dahiya has to understand this Dignitaries have greater knowledge than the data sheet which he is following because they come from the grassroot level of facing problems regarding single use plastics.
We would prefer if he'd let the guests speak more on the topic rather debating with them cause it's not Republic TV debate with Arnab Goswami. It's Rstv .. our favorite channel and we take down notes from the speeches of the guests for our answer writing.

According to my view if we use "jute bags" instead of plastic bags(except some goods ).It will make jute industries boost and generate employment opportunities. We are known that our neighbour country Bangladesh has already implemented plastic-like jute material developed name "sonali"..

    • @sanjib767
      @sanjib767 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @am py yes its true..
But if we save our environment from single use plastic which is not decomposes & no plants grow on it and also block drainage /rivers flow .. On the other side jute is biodegradable. And effects for jute cultivation(ecological damages )is inferior than plastics. .

    • @sanjib767

    (from baliyans website)
    Context:
Govt. of India has laid great emphasis on eradicating single-use plastic which has become one of the biggest sources of pollution. During his Independence Day Speech Prime Minister had urged the people to take a pledge on Mahatama Gandhi's 150th Anniversary on 2nd October to make the country free of single-use plastic.
    Background
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has put 52 producers, brand owners, and importers, including big online retailers such as Amazon and Flipkart, and companies such as Patanjali Ayurved and Britannia, on notice, for failing to take responsibility for their plastic waste.
In 2016, the government introduced Plastic Waste Management Rules wherein a new feature of extended producer responsibility (EPR) was also introduced.
Only 24 States and Union Territories have complied with the Centre’s Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules, 2016, to regulate the manufacture, sale, distribution, and use of plastic carry bags including those of compostable plastic and plastic sheets for packaging or wrapping applications.
The menace of plastic dumping is on the rise and so are the mountains of garbage in the city. Approximately 7-9 million tonnes of annual plastic waste is generated in India (CPCB estimates).
    Summary of the Debate
What is single-use plastic? What are some major concerns regarding it?
Single-use plastics, often also referred to as disposable plastics, are commonly used for plastic packaging and include items intended to be used only once before they are thrown away or recycled.
These include, among other items, grocery bags, food packaging, bottles, straws, containers, cups and cutlery.
Single-use plastic bags are used to carry goods and usually provided to customers at the point of sale. The most common shopping bags are made of a type of plastic called polyethylene - or polythene - a tough, light, flexible, synthetic resin obtained by polymerizing ethylene.
Single-use plastic products are widely used because they are strong, cheap and hygienic ways to transport goods.Plastic groceries bags consume less energy and water to produce and generate less solid waste than paper bags, taking up less space in landfills.
However, some of the characteristics that make them commercially successful - price, durability and resistance - also contribute to making them environmentally unsound (when mismanaged) and difficult to recycle.

What are Environmental, Economic, Health and Social impacts of Single-Use Plastic?
    Environmental impact:
While it is still unclear, some studies suggest that plastic bags and Styrofoam containers can take up to thousands of years to decompose, contaminating soil and water, and posing significant ingestion, choking and entanglement hazards to wildlife on land and in the ocean.
Due to their lightweight and balloon-shaped design, plastic bags are easily blown in the air, eventually ending up on land and in the ocean.
Plastics in the environment pose significant hazards to wildlife both on land and in the ocean. High concentrations of plastic materials, particularly plastic bags, have been found blocking the breathing passages and stomachs of hundreds of different species.
Plastic bags in the ocean resemble jellyfish and are often ingested by turtles and dolphins who mistake them for food. There is emerging evidence that the toxic chemicals added during the manufacturing process transfer from the ingested plastic into the animals’ tissues, eventually entering the food chain for humans as well.
    Economic impact:
Stranded single-use plastics create visual pollution and are increasingly becoming a priority especially in countries that rely heavily on tourism as a major source of GDP, such as Small Island Developing States.
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) estimated a $1.3 billion economic impact of marine plastics to the tourism, fishing and shipping industries in that region alone.
Styrofoam products present challenging recovery dynamics, making recycling - although technically possible - often financially unviable. For instance, Styrofoam usually can't be recycled locally but must instead be transported to a centralized plant.
    Health and Social impacts:
These items contain toxic chemicals such as styrene and benzene. Both are considered carcinogenic and can lead to additional health complications, including adverse effects on the nervous, respiratory and reproductive systems, and possibly on the kidneys and liver.
Research has shown that in developed as well as in developing countries, littering of plastic bags and Styrofoam containers can lead to perceived ‘welfare losses’ associated for instance to the visual disamenity of a park being contaminated with litter. This increases the indirect social costs of plastic pollution.
In developing countries with inadequate solid waste management regulations, plastic bag litter can aggravate pandemics. By blocking sewage systems and providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other pests, plastic bags can raise the risk of transmission of vector-borne diseases such as malaria.
What are the solutions and alternatives we might be looking at?
Waste management system:Improvements Bans on plastic bags and Styrofoam items can effectively counter some of the symptoms of plastic overuse. However, better waste management systems, along with circular thinking, can help achieve long-term impacts and better address the problem of plastics in the environment.
Promotion of eco-friendly Alternatives:By working together with industry, governments can support the development and promotion of sustainable alternatives in order to phase out single-use plastics progressively. Cloth bags, paper bags, aluminium container and glass can become alternatives.
Social awareness and public Pressure:Social awareness and education are essential to shape and encourage changes in consumer behaviour, but a gradual, transformational process is necessary.
Voluntary reduction strategies and agreements: Reduction strategies are another option to lessen the number of plastic bags and the amount of single-use plastic packaging. As opposed to bans and taxes, the value of reduction strategies is that they do not attempt to force sudden changes in the market.

What is the plastic industry’s viewpoint?
Single-use plastic has very strong visibility. Littering is the main issueand that should be tackled by the government.
The industry is capable of recycling single-use plastic despite its very small size but the collection is the major challenge for this.
    Way Forward
For effective policies we do not have proper data; Municipal Corporation should get the data that how much plastic is being generated every day.
Try to look at alternatives which should be affordable and ecologically viable.
Behavioural change: More than anything else, willingness on the part of people, not just the government or manufacturers, is the need of the hour.
The two prongs of the solution are packaging innovation that reduces its use by using alternatives and upscaling waste segregation, collection, and transmission. Public-Private Partnership option can be explored in terms of waste management and waste disposal.
Other steps that can be taken by the government may include innovative steps like utilizing plastic for making roads (Kerala, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu are a few states that have already begun work on these lines or promoting the use of bioplastics.

    Single use plastic:
    Used once and thrown away
    Category:
    Polytene bags,
    Packed bottles
    Staws
    Cutleries,etc..
    Grey areas:
    1. Not defined clearly what constitutes SUP
    2. Remain uncollected bcz of unclear properties of what constitutes SUP
    IMPACTS:
    1. Plastic is not biodegradable, it takes many years to degrade to less toxic
    2. Littering constd by Thin plastic than Thick
    3. 9.46mn tonnes of waste generated every year, 43% is SUP
    4. No viable alternative to plastic like paper, wooden spoons, etc shifts problem to same level
    5. India at 35 on plastic waste generation which is always not enough for REACHING SDG
    WF:
    1. collection must be improved by Municipal corporation to bring into treatment
    2. By change in design and compsition, recycling approach
    3. Economically and Ecological viability for an alternative
    4. Nudging and incentivising can be used for behavioral change
    5. Techs for manufacturing of green steel by foreign countries. Such techs need to be developed for out of box solutions
    Measures taken:
    Write some
    Conclusion:
All the stakeholders responsibility must be understood,
edn and promotion through awareness campaigns

Why can't we replace packaging plastic be replaced with other alternative.
We find more of these packets in garbage than other plastics.
Can't the government pressurise the big firms like lays, britania or surf to use alternatives. Moreover they have used these alternative in past.
Now after plastic ban, these big firms are the only to be blamed and responsible for littering.

Collection is a challenge but with little effort this will be easy with a little advantage of sanitation means, if government plan to place a garbage collector like dustbin in a gap of short distance on roadside & promote the ad for sanitation and environmental, ecology etc which will be make people responsible & encourage them to save our earth with awareness of what's going on around them & this will happen with ad. In every where. This will be a little initiative for as of now but it's result will be fruitful in future as human being is not going to end right now.
