MALNUTRITION: • According to the World Bank Global Nutrition Report - 2018, malnutrition costs India at least $10 billion annually in terms of lost productivity, illness and death and is seriously retarding improvements in human development and further reduction of childhood mortality. • Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey: Problem of undernutrition & over nutrition (obesity), micronutrient (Fe, Zn, B12, folic acid) deficiency Three important indicators: (NFHS-4, 2016) • Underweight: ~ 35%, a decrease in 10% over past 10yrs. • Wasting (low weight for height): Increased from 19% to 21% • Stunting (low height for age): ~ 38%, 7% decrease in 10 years. POSHAN Abhiyaan: • India’s flagship programme to improve nutritional outcomes for children, adolescents, pregnant women & lactating mothers by leveraging technology, a targeted approach & convergence. • Multi ministerial (WCD, MoHFW, MoW&S) convergence mission with a vision to attain malnutrition free India by 2022. • Poshan Atlas: map the crops & food grains grown in different regions of the country so that nutritious protein rich food in local areas can be promoted. • Ambitious targets - reducing malnutrition 2% per yr, anaemia - 3% per yr • Poshan Mah: September. • Jan Andolan Reasons: • Lack of awareness: about micronutrients & macronutrients. • Availability of food. • Child feeding practices: poor breast feeding. • Anganwadi centres are the backbone for ICDS programme handling 0-6 yrs child but CAG & other reports paint dismal picture: some centres don’t have weighing machines. • Extreme focus on Secondary & tertiary care neglecting the primary health care. • Underlying burden of disease: further reduce child’s capacity to absorb nutrients. UP & Bihar suffering from Japan encephalitis disease Way Forward: • Public Health Management Cadres • National Health policy, 2017 focus on primary health care infrastructure. • First pillar of Ayushman Bharat: Primary Health care centres extremely important. Countries with good health indicators like UK, Sweden have strong primary health services. • National deworming programme: reduce infection. • Involving community: PRI • Education to adolescents & women: will prevent future generations from malnutrition. • Focus on cleanliness. • Mission Indradhanush - universal immunization: 7% per yr. Continuous & targeted approach across all indicators like health, education, sanitation in different sections of the society will help India achieve its desired outcome.
