Oh, man! The boxart for this game has been ingrained in my head from when I was a little kid. I remember seeing the picture of the giant robot bursting through the wall in a game magazine. I've never played the game but that image has always been with me for some reason. I've tried to find this picture before but I never had any luck because I was too young to remember the name of the game. CYBERNATOR! You've literally solved a mystery that's been with me for about 25 years or so lol! Thanks dude!
Fun fact: Cybernator is called Assault Suits Valken in Japan, and is a sequel game to Target Earth, known as Assault Suits Leynos for the Sega Genesis in Japan. There's a sequel game to Assault Suits Valken on Playstation, Assault Suits Valken 2, that plays like Front Mission. There's also a direct sequel to Assault Suits Leynos called Assault Suits Leynos 2 for the Sega Saturn that is more like an upgraded Assault Suits Valken with enhanced graphics. I'm personally a fan of the series, including the cheesy plot, and I love the gritty, ground-pounding feel of the Assault Suits you pilot in these games.
I really appreciated the story line in Cybernator. So many games were simply Evil Guy does something bad, Good Guy must save the day. This game had a believable story and the "bad guy" even came back to save one of his soldiers (instead of the tired trope where the evil bad guy doesn't care about anyone on his own side).
Do you know how awesome it would be if Contra paused the game to say "there is a giant weird ass looking turtle that just busted out of a concrete wall."
idk, but i think the overhead levels are pretty cool, i never felt disappointed when i got to one. they added some much needed variety and aren't nearly as bad as he claims in the video.
Poverty Gamer I got the HD remake of Leynos on the ps4 store for 5 bucks...blasted through most of it...I was pretty happy, but was really chasing Metal Warriors...
I rented this as a kid. It takes awhile to get used to controls but afterwards you realize it's great. One of the best sleeper hits on the SNES. Pro tip the punch is overpowered so upgrade it to max then the laser for an easy time.
*I friggin' love this game.* Living in Europe, my console was in PAL format (50Hz, with black bands on top and on the bottom). I remember playing the Japanese version first and then getting the PAL version when it released in Europe. The PAL version was one of the first game I tested with my modded SNES (which could switch between 50 and 60Hz). All of a sudden the Valken mech was much bigger. It was (litterally) a game changer :)
One of the first games i ever played, i've always loved the way you can sort of charge dash. I'm pretty sure you can exit the mech and walk around as a tiny human.
I have to say I quite enjoyed the dialogue in cybernator because it made me feel like I'm part of a team. I also liked when you talked over Contra before they boss started that would enhance my enjoyment of the game because it has the potential to set the tone for the boss or game. If it's a joke would be more light hearted in the atmosphere or if it's serious dialog it could mean it's going to be a hard fight. although Contra already does this because the music changes or signify boss. In schmups there's sometimes an on screen signal of warning.
Definitely up there as one of my all time favorite SNES titles, replay values despite the perpetual plot interruption spamming was astonishing, having the luxury to pick and choose your weapon upgrades on the fly was a wiff of customizational fresh air at the time. it was one of the first games where I learned the elegance of combative difference between an overpowered laser cannon and a perpetually expanding explosive melee punch with a shield, clearly a predecessor for the Armored Core and Dark Souls franchises we enjoy now, IMHO.
The top down levels in Contra3 were just a thing. They were like the FPS levels in Contra for NES or the top down levels in Super Contra. They were an established part of the series.
The story is very simple. It just feels terrible because of localization decisions. The two remaining superpowers on Earth go to war. Jake assumes it's a resource fight from what he knows, but he doesn't know for sure, because he's just some guy that was in the marines and just finished training when it started, and he himself says it doesn't matter, what matters is surviving the war. The first few missions are gaining space superiority. So command orders the Versis and its marines (The suits) to destroy a shipyard and battleship in construction, an asteroid mining facility, an orbital space station and a spaceport. The enemy doesn't surrender, so command orders an attack to take the enemy capital to end the war. The Versis moves through the Alps and the marines destroy a hidden AAA unit firing on the ship. Then you join in the attack on the enemy capital, fight to the enemy senate, then find the enemy leader, who you order to stand down his forces, but he shoots himself rather than surrender. So you keep fighting and destroying enemy troops until you finally pacify all enemy resistance. In the good end, the Versis lost 2 out of 4 marines, Jake returns to the ship and barely survives after his suit is destroyed, reuniting with his girlfriend Claire (The ship's comms officer) and expresses comfort that at least the war is over. In the bad end, the ship is destroyed, Jake is the sole survivor of his unit, and he blames himself for it and complains bitterly about the war taking away everyone he loved. This is the perfect game for this story. It's a game about war, with a story about war.
If Contra III did that shit I would be thrilled. I do understand how it would take away from the replay value, though. Perhaps a story mode and a mayhem mode would help, where all the cut scenes are cut
Loved this game so much. Got good enough to finish it with one life back in the day. Here's a secret, if you go through the first level dashing till you get to the boss and best him without killing other enemies you unlock the napalm for the rest of the game. It's seriously op!
I loved this game as a kid thank you for making a video about it and bringing back the great memories aand nostalgia keep doing what your doing man I love your videos they help me revisit my childhood and remember all the great games I grew up playing on the snes. Props!!!
Kinda seems like you're nitpicking with the dialogue. It's a pretty decent story actually. Just wish that we didn't get the edited version of the game where a lot of the context is removed. There's an enemy you battle right before the final boss of the game. In the edited version we got, there actually is no dialogue, making it seem like some random enemy... But it turns out that it's the enemy pilot you saved earlier in the game in the mission where you descend to Earth.
I just want to chime in and emphasize that you if you enjoy this game, it's worth grabbing the translation patch for Assault Suits Valken. It restores the anime-style dialogue portraits as well as a bit of censorship. Fantastic game.
Yeah, Cybernator was previously one of my top 5 SNES games, but has now been replaced by Assault Suits Valken. The extra bits that were cut to make Cybernator also make playing it superfluous. Recently I had gotten an SNES Classic, and Cybernator was the first game that I had added. It made sense since I usually play it a few times a year anyway. Soon after, I added Assault Suits Valken, and after that there wasn't any real reason to keep Cybernator stored on it anymore.
Japanese version (with English translation) has some nice quality of life improvements. The dialogue boxes use images of the characters instead of their names, and they don't pause game play to give you time to read them. I actually missed a lot of the story so far because I'm too busy shooting stuff. But you die often enough that you'll have plenty of chances to read anything if you're really interested. It's called Assault Suit: Vulcan, though. Highly recommended if you know where to source ROMs.
I loved this game as a kid, me and my friend would always get to or close to the last level but could never beat it. I didn't beat this game until I was an adult... maybe my friend was holding me back lol...
Yes! I remember this game! I had forgotten the name for quite some time. And I could not remember if it was a Super Nintendo game, or a Playstation game. I do remember the sound design and the feel, just whenever the Cybernator would take steps or land.
The story of Assault Suits Vulcan had a pretty good story, and it DOES fit the action... Cybernator on the otherhand wasn't translated well. The gameplay either way is top notch, and I am glad they used that style of mech gameplay in Metal Warriors and Front Mission Gun Hazard
I remember trying it out back in the day and finding it way too hard to avoid enemy shots, and I don't even know if I made it past the first stage. But I kept renting it because it looked so cool to play.
I just completed _Front Mission:Gunhazard_ ,and the resemblance of the detailed sprite work and style is uncanny! Almost identical looking. Not that it's a problem, but I wonder if there is a correlation?
Make it through the first level without firing off a single shot from your vulcan or destroying enemies (except the boss) and when you start stage 2 you get an OP Napalm gun.
A lot of the background story is basically just "not-Gundam". You'll find that the storyline for Cybernator, vs the original Assault Suits Valken was actually toned down. There was a lot of dialogue that was removed. Not sure why. In the most cases I don't think it's censorship so much as the fact that you can fit a lot more text in Japanese moonrunes, so english text that would take four or five dialogue boxes can be crunched into just one or two. So yeah. They tried to keep the pacing similar, even if the story suffered a touch.
They got rid of the Anime faces and parts of the story because back then there was still a fear of having japanese culture influence american and european culture too much. In Germany the teenage mutant ninja turtles were renamed to teenage mutant hero turtles
You can get the napalm weapon by avoiding killing or collecting anything on the first stage except for the battery pack boss at the end. Can't shoot any of the mobile guns defending it, either. fewest points possible for the level. There's also a code to get 6 continues. That's one of the few ways to really beat the game. It's pretty challenging. One of my favorites. I still have my cartridge.
The second level is brutal as I can’t seem to find any health. The constant moving with rocks, rockets, gun shots, and all of the enemies in your way…so tough like an SNES game should be but it keeps me wanting more to try to figure out a way to get past it. Never played it as a kid but picked it up for the ol snes collection and it’s been a blast
I just saw a week ago I have this one on my Wii (I have all the nes snes n64 games of the virtual console thanks to an ambassador program) and give it a try : I had game over on the 2nd boss, but that was really fun !
Thank You for this video!!! I played this game once as a kid and could never remember the name! I always wanted to play it again. Now I know it's Cybernator.
If I remember correctly this was given a rerelease as a budget PS2 title under its original title as 'Assault Suit Valken'. Never picked it up, but I probably should have.
Cybernator is fantastic, probably the best action game you can get for $15-$20 on the SNES. Pick it up while you can.If you want to get a better sense of story play the translated SFC version. This isn't a Konami game though, it's from Masaya.
Recently played this for the first time ever after having seen your video. Thanks for the recommendation, it truly is awesome! My only gripe with it is how hard and cheap-hard it is. Ridiculous that they expect anyone to beat this on 4 (or 5?) lives. So many things will insta-kill you or drain your lifebar if you just happen to stand in the wrong spot. It’s cruel. Otherwise awesome game, great graphics, atmosphere, music and set pieces. Could’ve been legendary if not for the cheap difficulty!
I remember my friend lending me this game when I was a kid and the first couple levels was so hard. That god damn timer to an already hard game, I raged quit.. but now I realised how great this game was.
The story and the gameplay reminds me of the Gundam anime series. Its almost like the developers wanted to make a Gundam game, but didn't have the license so they made this.
How can this game remind you of Contra3 and Super Turricane, and not METAL WARRIORS?? In fact how can you not even mention metal warriors here? I mean bro... Of course its just a tease/critique in good fun! impecable video like usual, man 👌
Actually, you should try out the Japanese version, Assault Suit Leynos. They made a translation and playing it for some moments you realize that it is a game made to be like a big playable Mech-Anime. Yes, Assault Suit Leynos has allot more story then the gutted Cybernator ...
Assault Suits Leynos was the Japanese title for "Target: Earth" for the Genesis/Mega Drive. Cybernator here was known as Assault Suits Valken in Japan.
Hupsi, copied the wrong name. I meant to say, that SNES drunk should check out the Translated version of Assault Suits Valken. Pretty much like the Japanese version of the NES game Contra, they butchered out all the nice Story segments from the Japanese Original for the Western Release. That said, i knew of Assault Suits Valken on the Snes(i played it as Cybernator) and Assault Suits Valken 2(which i never played, i didn't own a PS2) but i did not know about "Target: Earth". I guess i have to give that one a go, thanks for the info ;p
But fun. there's another boss before him that you fight in some sort of church like setting, it's been a while I'm sorry. It's the boss of the street city level I believe, that one so damn cheap. I loved Cybernator for the fact that progression is rewarding, unless other games I beat like Super Empire Strikes back that you feel 25 years older after beating it our of sheer grief.
Really need to play the English Translation of this game! It's way better, you should update this video. The english translation of the original doesnt pause the game, and there is better story.
Adding a story to what is a basic game is not "sloppy"! It adds depth to what could be an otherwise shallow experience, of which there are many on this generation of console. They should be applauded for trying to add this depth and story. Sure the execution could've been better, but if the story wasn't there you'd be complaining about not knowing why you were killing who you were killing. It's good to have at least a little context for why you're destroying leagues of enemies. Seems like major nit-picking to call it out for that. The game's awesome btw. The controls aren't that hard to master, they're just slightly more complex than the jump button + fire button + bomb button of most other games of this genre and generation. Even the graphics of your mech are much better than most games of this generation, right down to the way it moves that feels like a heavy piece of machinery, without it being cumbersome or taking away from the fun. This game always stood out in my memory of SNES games. Shame you feel the need to bash a developer for having slightly more ambition than is the standard for this genre of game. Maybe you're too drunk, pal.
One of the few times I disagree with your reviews. The storyline is an important part of the game as the developers were heavily inspired by series in Japan such as Gundam and the 'real military robot' genre. That is why is it awful that the original port got so butchered and censored. The idea is that the player plays a role in a real military campaign. One in which neither side is good or bad.
Oh, man! The boxart for this game has been ingrained in my head from when I was a little kid. I remember seeing the picture of the giant robot bursting through the wall in a game magazine. You've literally solved a mystery that's been with me for about 25 years or so lol! Thanks dude!
That is pretty cool man!
I had the same issue, but with a playstation game featuring FPS rabbit game play.

You can tell straight away by the voice that this is OG SNESdrunk. Love it!!

idk, but i think the overhead levels are pretty cool, i never felt disappointed when i got to one. they added some much needed variety and aren't nearly as bad as he claims in the video.
The desert one is dreadful for that boss fight
I remember the magazine ads saying "Now Robocop and The Terminator have some one they can look up to".
ironically the cybernator would likely be a derivative of something skynet or ocp worked on in the past..
That is the ad that sold it to me. Lol
This game is apart of the Assault Suit Leynos series, which includes, Target Earth, Cybernator, Assault Suit Leynos 2
He also went with Cybernator instead of Valken, dude went full dummy.
"I know this is Jake..." Sigh.
Poverty Gamer I got the HD remake of Leynos on the ps4 store for 5 bucks...blasted through most of it...I was pretty happy, but was really chasing Metal Warriors...

sor3999 That's been my upgrade tactic for this game 😁
Also Napalm. dont forget the Napalm-
Cybernator is my childhood. To me it will always be flawless.
Very good game. Loved it. Same feels.
*I friggin' love this game.*

Yeah cybernator is excellent. I especially like the weapons and upgraded weapons systems. Plus playing as a huge robot is always a good thing
great underrated game. great video - that hypothetical Contra radio dialogue was perfect LOL

One of my first games. That music takes me back many years!!!
One of the best soundtracks on the system.
The version I played cut out the talking but it did have some dialogue after the space station and that was it. Wonderful game BTW.
If Contra III did that shit I would be thrilled. I do understand how it would take away from the replay value, though. Perhaps a story mode and a mayhem mode would help, where all the cut scenes are cut

I got this on my SNES Mini, I think the game is actually surprisingly fun
The top down levels were super fun in Contra III. I can play that for days.
Mod7 because NINTENDO is what SEG-isn't
I had this game when I was a kid. Loved it
Kinda seems like you're nitpicking with the dialogue. It's a pretty decent story actually. Just wish that we didn't get the edited version of the game where a lot of the context is removed. i like your reviews theyre straight to the point and fast
I'm so glad you included the patch which brings over the Japanese-only content. That really completes the game.

It's called Assault Suit: Vulcan, though.
Highly recommended if you know where to source ROMs.
Nice video.
Cybernator is also the prequel to Target Earth on Genesis.
I recommend Front Mission: Gun Hazard if you like this type of game.
I loved this game as a kid, me and my friend would always get to or close to the last level but could never beat it. I didn't beat this game until I was an adult... maybe my friend was holding me back lol...
Adding this and Metal Warriors to my SNES mini asap!
Yeah, my favorite shoot-em-up by far for the nes! Huge explosions and really nice nuances in the animations made my year!
The Valken series is great. This and Target Earth on the Genesis are must plays imo
I get Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner vibes from this.
A true hidden gem. I liked the story dialogues 😅 It makes you feel like you are in an Anime series.
Yes! I remember this game! I had forgotten the name for quite some time. And I could not remember if it was a Super Nintendo game, or a Playstation game. I do remember the sound design and the feel, just whenever the Cybernator would take steps or land.

yeah, OmiyaSoft and Masaya apparently had many employees in common
Make it through the first level without firing off a single shot from your vulcan or destroying enemies (except the boss) and when you start stage 2 you get an OP Napalm gun.
I still come back to play this gem here and there.
The music at the end sounds very similar to Contra. Super intense stress inducing haha
A lot of the background story is basically just "not-Gundam".

So yeah. They tried to keep the pacing similar, even if the story suffered a touch.
TheTurnipKing The story suffered a fair bit, I'd say... Which is a shame.
They got rid of the Anime faces and parts of the story because back then there was still a fear of having japanese culture influence american and european culture too much.
In Germany the teenage mutant ninja turtles were renamed to teenage mutant hero turtles
I loved this game when I was a child! Awesome gameplay, graphics, sound and it was challenging, you couldn't ask for more!
Lol at the contra dialogue
great music too!
I got a game Metal Warriors I love. Not sure which came first this or that but they look so alike it is uncanny.
lmao at the "home base theres a big ass turtle"
You can get the napalm weapon by avoiding killing or collecting anything on the first stage except for the battery pack boss at the end. Can't shoot any of the mobile guns defending it, either. fewest points possible for the level. There's also a code to get 6 continues. That's one of the few ways to really beat the game. Yeah, the last boss is impossible to beat without the napalm (impossible = something I can't do)
I've never seen this one before, but it looks a lot like Metal Warriors to my eye. I'm surprised that didn't get a mention here.

Cool game and gameplay! I like the graphics and the mechanics as well! Awesome review!
Actually, if Contra did stop and deliver dialogue like the way you presented about that turtle character, that would be pretty freaking awesome!
You should check Gigantic Army, it's a newer title, but it is basically this game. And there are like 6 or 7 games on the series
A great SNES game, well done
Whow, this Game looks really good!
Recently played this for the first time ever after having seen your video. Thanks for the recommendation, it truly is awesome! My only gripe with it is how hard and cheap-hard it is. Jake: This is Jake - 🙈🙈🙈
Yeah, this does look a bit like Metal Warriors, hopefully it doesn't achieve rarity like that game has. Awesome review!
I loved the Saturn version and wanna buy the one on steam
I remember my friend lending me this game when I was a kid and the first couple levels was so hard. That god damn timer to an already hard game, I raged quit.. but now I realised how great this game was.
is always good to have story no matter what type a game.

Good old Jake Colon.
I used to set my name to Roger only to get dialog boxes like Roger: Roger!: Roger
I love this game!

The final boss was super hard
But fun.
there's another boss before him that you fight in some sort of church like setting, it's been a while I'm sorry.

Good to know!
Golden days of gaming.... Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda, Cybernator, TMNT and Secret of Mana...
so you're saying this game has an Alia?
The story, as you describe it, just sounds like Gundam, and that's fine by me.
I've been trying to find this
This is Gun Hazard Front mission with different text lol
1:30 So basically, Call of Duty of its time?
It reminds me alot of Metal Warriors
Titanfal grandpa is cute.
1:23 lol, he's saying that to the other character in the game, not the player.
lol, same opinion
They should make a sequel to this.
They did
mjolnir Check out Assault Suits Leynos on PSN. It's a remake of Target Earth which was the predecessor to Cybernator
It looks a lot like assault suit leynos on Megadrive
Both games come from the same series.
does this game have a "STFU Alia" hack as well?
One of the few times I disagree with your reviews.
The storyline is an important part of the game as the developers were heavily inspired by series in Japan such as Gundam and the 'real military robot' genre. That is why is it awful that the original port got so butchered and censored.
The idea is that the player plays a role in a real military campaign. One in which neither side is good or bad.
when konami was at the top
This looks a lot like Metal Warriors... But there's no relationship? Interesting.
Two words. Gun Hazard.
Amazing game! :-)
