Running a very, VERY muddy Clarence parkrun, Bury, Greater Manchester. Did I mention it was muddy?!

- We headed over the Pennines to check out one of the newer parkruns in Greater Manchester. Clarence parkrun, in Bury, was a real surprise in lots of different ways! The team were second to none in terms of friendliness and parkrun passion, and the course was super interesting to say the least! This has to be one of the muddiest parkruns I have ever run! You know it's going to be bad when you're advised to make sure your shoes are tied tightly in the Run Briefing!
If you like Cross Country racing then this will be a great parkrun for you... If you don't then I would strongly advise waiting until the end of the summer to visit! My top tip would be to visit the Tuck Shop straight after parkrun to allow the queue in the café to go down. Then head to The Green for breakfast. Both the Tuck Shop and The Green are community ventures which are well worth supporting, and they couldn't be located in a better position as they are literally a stones throw from the parkrun start/finish.
When you visit this parkrun then make sure you chat to the team, if not you'll definitely be missing out!

yeesh we did Armley parkrun on Saturday and that was very muddy - but not on this level! Well done to you & Poppy for getting round. Might visit if we have a long, dry summer!
I wondered what Armley was like ATM! Lol yes hopefully going at the end of summer would mean this would be dry but I'm not 100% 🤣
Great video as always Nicola, I ran/walked/slid this parkrun in October on event Number 3 the pop up sign hadn't arrived then it's definitely the muddiest course I've ever completed, running wellies would have been ideal!! It would need at least a month's heatwave to dry that one out! Well done for keeping a smile on your face 😀👏

Nicola how do you get so positive and excited? I never achieved those feelings when racing. I keep watching your videos to see if any of it transfers to me but to no avail lol. 😂
I think since my husband Ben died at 38 I just feel like I'm on borrowed time and so I just fully enjoy exactly what I'm doing at that time. Obviously I have down time and quiet time but that's indoors. Being outside energises me so much, I just love it! And when things are difficult, like the mud here, I just find it so funny. And my main thought is always "I'm choosing to do this so I may as well enjoy it!" 😃 It is hard to enjoy as much when I'm running really hard, obviously then the fun comes on reflection after I stop running... Maybe you're pushing a bit too hard? Or maybe you need to find a fun running buddy? That always makes me super excited! 😄🥰
That's my local Park run and I only just watched one of your videos for the first time last week. Nice surprise. The ladies & gents who run it are indeed great! Glad you enjoyed the mud!

What a cool run Nicola. Glad it wasn't knee deep mud and it looked like no one slipped at all. Brought back memories of a 5 mile cross country race I did almost 2 decades ago. It was entirely on a hilly farm and we had had a wet winter and overnight it had snowed about 3-4 inches. The morning temperature was about 10F. The winner of the race wound up running with just one shoe and when I finished I had blocks of ice frozen on my legs between my sweats. New British word of the day for me was "Tuck Shop". Had absolutely no idea what one was. Got the Las Vegas Half Marathon done this weekend... what an experience.

This is going on the list, and for winter too. Bit sadistic maybe but splashing around that muddy but gorgeous looking course among that lovely sounding community is my idea of an excellent Saturday morning. I don't care if it takes me 2 hours :-)

I've heard Great Notley parkrun often has similar conditions to this, but haven't done it yet.

Poor Poppy, sometimes we go through a lot of colds etc but the plus side is it boosts the immune system for the future xx

Marshall at 11:05 then tokens at 26:03 - Vince, who was on Peel's core team before Clarence started and involved with the juniors at Ramsbottom too I think. Another prolific NW volunteer (you know the Burrell's obvs!). Btw, there's a heavy parkrun presence at the Ramsbottom Summer Mile each year, midweek race that might be worth a nosy (though might already be sold out for this summer).
13:50 - Clarence is the only Gtr Manc venue I haven't ran yet [I'm holding it back for advent, but it cancelled the week I planned to run it this winter); but I did marshall at that spot a few weeks back so have been there. Due to events later in the day though, I was in road shoes which made crossing the field interesting! Agree about the community spirit :)
This looks on par with Cheadle Hulme at its muddiest (albeit with more pavement; both cancelled this week as too waterlogged), and Worden has quickly gotten a similar rep over here as well.
Awww yeah definitely the first timers and Vince - both totally ace! Lol to the RD in wellies 😂😂😂 I can't imagine doing the field in road shoes 😳🤣 that would definitely be fun 😂😂😂

Gosh, what a muddy parkrun, Nicola, I am back at Squerryes Winery parkrun tomorrow for the first time in five weeks. We have two notorious areas that get very muddy in the Winter. One is called The Somme & the other is called The Shoe Graveyard (because a Run Director lost a trainer there on a parkrun & did most of the course before retrieving it ! 🤣 ! The big question for me tomorrow though is do I do parkrun in my new Brooks running trainers which I bought last month or use the old pair with a whole in them for the mud. I have been running on tarmac courses in my new trainers for the past few weeks as I have been trying to finish Lon-done, only 3 left to go now.

I ran in my new Brooks trainers today because the hole that suddenly appeared in the old trainers was so big I would have got a very wet foot. Fortunately, the Brooks trainers are black if they had been a light colour (which I might not have seen again!) I would probably have opted for the soggy foot option ! 🙂 The course was so muddy & waterlogged I was 8 mins 49 secs slower than I was on the flat tarmaced course at Harrow last week ! I shall go somewhere drier next week. 🙂
One other thing. Coincidentally, the lady who did the First Timers Welcome when I ran at Fountains Abbey in July ran at Squerryes Winery with her husband this morning. We had a good chat in the cafe afterwards

i will have to do this one 1 day when it is not as muddy one park run i would recomend is Sewerby at Bridlington i did that last year and then the Bridlington 13.5 trail race which is a very tough one

I did this a few weeks ago. After the first lap of the field I was thinking how did this ever get approved, by the end of the second lap I was smiling from ear to ear and planning plenty more visits. It’s up there with Cheadle Hulme and Watergrove as the toughest I’ve done, and also the best I’ve done. Not sure what that says about me. I fear it will get called off for large chunks of the winter which will be a real shame 😢
Ooh I love Watergrove! That's such a stunning course 😍 Yeah we'll have to see about cancellations. They've not had too many this winter and the weather has been extreme! I love your perspective of not getting it until the second lap and then loving it 😃 that's awesome! It's definitely an experience isn't it?! I adore off road running so was loving it despite it being tough! 🏃♀️
What do think about Park Run deleting the age-related and local course records from the website? (I am unhappy that this has been done since it affects all the runners who were inspired to run fast. All because Park Run refused to stand up for women’s sport)
I don't think it's related to the trans women/records discussion at all. I think that was just media nonsense. I believe the parkrun Comms saying that the removal of the records fits with bringing the website in line with the parkruns ethos. However I think it's a great shame that they couldn't squirrel them away somewhere in a deep dark corner of the website so that people who were inspired and motivated by them could still access them. Maybe not the sub 17/sub 20 as I do think they are a direct contradiction to parkruns ethos but the course records could have stayed somewhere. Same with the most events tables. Still... parkrun remains the same wonderful experience on a Saturday morning. I hope parkrun HQ reflect and learn from this and handle Comms better in the future though because this was really disappointing. It's really sad to see the community arguing like this. But... Onwards and upwards ☺️

However it is OBVIOUSLY related to the trans issue, and I am personally livid that people have not realised that this is the fact and just brushed it off because Park Run is so happy-clappy. Rather than taking the right side on the attack on our culture which undermines women’s sport completely. Surely people understand that women’s records cannot and should not be held by men and that it is not difficult to stand up for that? I am SO DISAPPOINTED IN EVERYONE quite frankly, whether people are wilfully ignorant or happy to be blissfully conveniently unaware of the elephant in the room. And simply move on when ALL THE RECORDS HAVE BEEN DELETED IN THE NAME OF INCLUSION. What about the inspiration of the fast runners both themselves working to achieve more and us admiring their times? It is a sad day. A win for the cultural Marxists and narcissistic woke communists dictating the latest rules and getting away with it.

@@hamwhacker how can it be related?! Age grading remains and so the issue remains. It's not been addressed at all so for me the two issues are totally unrelated. I'm confused as to why you're saying they are related. parkrun hasn't even made any effort to address it. It remains an issue to be addressed in the future. IMO it's unhelpful for people to link these two things 🤷🏻♀️ We'll have to agree to disagree. I'm still looking at parkrun waiting for them to address that issue. I believe their motivation for the record removal is, as they said, related to the website aligning with the parkrun ethos 🙃

They were under pressure to address the T issue, so the response was to delete all records that people might have been accidentally infiltrated (let’s put it like that). A sledgehammer to crack a nut. And it’s not fair on anyone actually.

It was so much fun! I was laughing all the way round 🤣 I think that as long as you brief people on what to expect then it's fine and we were definitely warned about the mud! 😂 Tie up your shoes extra tight 🤣🤣🤣
