    Your ability to transfer complex principles into fairly simple mind pictures is the BEST I’ve ever seen. Usually when someone is sharing knowledge of such value they want to make sure that you understand how smart they are by using terminology that if your not an engineer you only get a small amount of value from the time you spend watching.     I've seen dozens of videos on shock absorbers and fork.
    These are by far the best, I serve my shock absorbers and fork alone (and it works for me) and now I understand how many things I did not take into account.
    Thank you so much for the knowledge you share and the amazing video.
    I would love to see a video on the weight of the oils and how they affect the work of the shock absorbers and fork.

    My wrist thank you so much, I have low/high speed compression settings, and high/low speed settings on my fork, now I understand why when I adjust the low speed compression to minimum dampening, the high speed compression nearly never is "active" because it does the opposit of what is eplained at 9:58, again, you are amazing man .

    Having previously had really basic suspension with no compression and rebound adjustment I've never needed to get into this side of suspension. Well explained. Now I know what's everyone's on about regarding shims.

      @@StepstoPodium This is an old classification method, that started before I was born. A more popular expression for the "best" is A1. Someone where I used to work, from the Quality Control Dept., would say A-1-1, meaning "the best".

    hey i've got a question at 4:38 - if the piston-rod comes down an compresses the oil in zone B, there are two possibilities for the oil to go out of this zone: 1. the compression base valve and 2. through the check valve of the piston. Both ways can be taken to reduce the pressure in zone B. What I don't understand is that if the oil goes through the piston check valve (2.) there is not much resistance to the oil because this valve is very big. So why should be there any kind of damping?

      That is a great question! What happens is that only the volume in oil of the piston rod entering the cartridge is pushed through the base valve, the rest goes through the piston rod check valve (in this case, usually there is always a mid speed valve, but to simplify I just made a check valve)

    5:39 -- Look at the far right pic... It shows that thick washer on the upper side of the piston moving upwards to allow oil to flow upwards through the piston... Is that top nut on the compression valve suppose to be left loose in order for that thick flat washer to compress that spring and open up allowing oil flow?

    The spring and washer I'm referring to are at 2:52 on the left side. These parts are on my compression valve ... The nut I am using here is clamped down and will not allow the thick washer to move any.

      No, of course not! usually the nut bottom out. It's just an illustration. I had to simplify some details to remove the "noise". that way it's easier to focus on the most important bits :)

    Well I'm stunned. I've been riding sport bikes for more than a decade and I never learned any of this. How do the shims move like that? What are they made of? Also, does that means electronic adjustable is just a lil servo moving that needle in and out?

      Now you do! Knowledge is power 😁
      They simply bend. Since they are really thin, they easily bend but don't get permanently deformed.
      Regarding the electronic adjustability, it can depend a lot from manufacturer, but yeah, it's a option having that!

    Sick video. So at 9:45 how exactly does the needle back itself out? Since the needle isn't directly attached to anything but is being pushed by a rod ( At least on my bike ) KYB 48mm. Does the needle get pushed back out by the oil pressure? Because mine is hard to move with my fingers when the fork is apart so I'm just curious how it works. Thank you !

      Thank you Daniel! 😄 the needle is actually threaded onto the aluminium piece, but it for illustration purposes, I decided to sinplify the sketch 😂

      Sorry, forgot about the rebound/midspeed valve 🤦🏻‍♂️😂 yes, that one has a spring as well and the spring pushes inwards and the rod pushes outwards for example (it may depends from different technologies) 👌

    HI matey, a number of people want to make DIY high pressure compressors (4000psi/200 bar) for paintball guns- People are discussing the idea of using motorbike forks to do it - they look meaty enough. Do you know what pressures they are designed to handle? And do you have any suggestions or interest in looking into it... it would be a very popular video I reckon. I might try myself, but need to know the pressure tolerances of forks, plus I don't have a lathe and am worried about getting stuck 99% of the way through the process. With a proper air filter/dryer these could be used to fill diving bottle, too (reserve air source for filling paintball guns). Any help or ideas gratefully received!

    I can see the telescopic fork suspension is just a strut where the coil spring is inside the shock absorber instead of the latter being inside the coil spring.
    Any reason such an "inverted strut" can't be used on cars?

    The KTM 390 Adventure now offers both open cartridge's and closed cartridges' versions. If 'm a off roader doing mild trails and dirt roads, mountain paths, should I go with open or closed? f plan to upgrade suspensions n the future, which version is more easier to upgrade? Suggestions?

      The open cartridge will have more comfort but closed cartridge will provide more stability. Depends on what you prefer!

    Tenho uma dúvida, tenho uma ktm com uma suspensão normal na frente , será que vale apena gastar dinheiro em alterar para uma suspensão invertida, vou sentir muita diferença?
    Não sei se gasto ou não visto que a mota é uma 125 e daqui a um anito ou dois quero outra mais forte, mas gostava de ter uma opinião

      Se estás a pensar em mudar de mota daqui a pouco tempo talvez não faça sentido gastares numas suspensões. São componentes bastante caros! Quando tiveres uma mota mais definitiva, talvez aí faça mais sentido 😊

    Hi. Could you help? My rebound clicker does not rotate more than 3 clicks. But it should be up to 15 clicks. What should i check? Damping rod? Or maybe fork cap with a clicker?

      how many click can you turn from fully closed to fully opened?
      Try closing the clicker and then fully open. you should be able to count around 15/20 clicks depending on the fork

      @@StepstoPodium I can turn 2, maybe 2 and a half clicks from fully open position. Manual to my 2015 v-strom 1000 says it should be 14 clicks. I tried a little harder but damaged clicker a little bit. So i can turn it 2 clicks ether way. But then it get harder and stuck =/

      then you should disassemble the forks! something is possibly blocking the needle, like some grit or dirt 😅

      @@StepstoPodium Yes, i think i would have to disassemble it anyway. I just want to consult a little bit because after i will find a problem i'm afraid i may need to order new parts and wait till they come, it may take up to one month =/ And i use bike every day.

    So you show shims only on one side of the pistons, and check plate on the opposite. Don't some have shims on both sides of the piston? With a coil spring and check plate?

      @@StepstoPodium I have a question, do you think the cartridge seal at the top of the open-cartridge type fork like my KYB46 FF should be completely sealed when it’s moving up with a rebound ? As my oil is leaking thru the seal back to main fork chamber and also thru the 2.5mm holes on the side of the cartridge cap where the seal for main 12.5mm rod is. Thank you.

    My fork would not compress all the way I have the right oil level .i try to hit bumbs , I have 50mm travel I can't use ,like I bottomed out?

    Hi - can somebody who knows how dampers work answer the following please? Trying to learn but I've watched the video 3 times and am confused. Surely damping cannot actually work as illustrated/described? I can see 2 fundamental problems:
    1) Taking the compression stroke as an example: as forks compress the piston sweeps down the damper. As a result, chamber A gets bigger and chamber B smaller - BY EXACTLY THE SAME VOLUME. It really doesn't matter which orifice/s any resulting oil exchange occurs through, but the fact is that chamber A can ONLY exchange oil with chamber B - so A takes the FULL amount of oil (displaced during the stroke) from chamber B. The oil exchange of chambers A/B is therefore "complete" and "fully accounted for" (and the pressures in chambers A/B will be balanced). There can therefore be no possibility for any oil to additionally pass from B to C as described. If this were to actually happen, B would then be exhausting more oil than A was in-taking (which is physically impossible).

    2) The 2nd issue is with the explanation of back-filling of chamber A during compression stroke. At 4:35 the author explains that during compression, the rebound check valve opens in order to fill chamber A. Why would it do that???? Oil would surely take the path of least resistance and simply flow up the "needle metered oil passageway" into chamber A instead?
    Both of the same problems apply equally to the rebound stroke as well.
    Any thoughts??? Thx.

      It can enter air imto the cartridge and at that point, it's the same as not having hidraulic damping at all!

    It makes me laugh when some of these complicated forks don't work as well as simple old-fashioned damper rod forks.
    But you explained why cartridge forks are so harsh on small square edged bumps.
    They can't tell the difference between a jump or a small square edged bump. This is where electronic suspension will be great.
    Bring it on.
